Introduction<br />

The aim of this module is to enable the candidate to:<br />

a carry safe work<strong>in</strong>g practices and procedures to ensure the safety of themselves,<br />

other personnel and members of the public<br />

b identify metals and compare their properties<br />

c use hand tools and sheet metal cutt<strong>in</strong>g and fold<strong>in</strong>g equipment<br />

d use the off hand gr<strong>in</strong>d<strong>in</strong>g mach<strong>in</strong>e and the fixed drill<strong>in</strong>g mach<strong>in</strong>e<br />

e select and use temporary and permanent methods of jo<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g materials<br />

f carry out oxy-acetylene gas cutt<strong>in</strong>g.<br />

The use of national/local regulations and work<strong>in</strong>g practices must be <strong>in</strong>cluded <strong>in</strong> all<br />

practical competences.<br />

Practical competences<br />

The candidate must be able to do the follow<strong>in</strong>g:<br />

Health and Safety<br />

1.1 Select protective cloth<strong>in</strong>g and equipment use and return to store.<br />

1.2 Carry out safe work<strong>in</strong>g practices when us<strong>in</strong>g nonportable powered mach<strong>in</strong>ery<br />

<strong>in</strong> accordance with national/local standards.<br />

1.3 Carry out manual handl<strong>in</strong>g operations.<br />

1.4 Carry out the safe movement of materials and components, observ<strong>in</strong>g safe<br />

work<strong>in</strong>g loads, us<strong>in</strong>g mechanical lift<strong>in</strong>g and ancillary equipment.<br />

1.5 Identify faults <strong>in</strong> lift<strong>in</strong>g aids and equipment.<br />

1.6 Use and transport ladders safely.<br />

1.7 Use electrical equipment <strong>in</strong> accordance with national/local standards.<br />

1.8 Carry out the correct procedure to isolate a person <strong>in</strong> contact with a simulated<br />

live s<strong>in</strong>gle phase electrical supply.<br />

1.9 Carry out resuscitation treatment.<br />

1.10 Observe safe work<strong>in</strong>g practices to reduce health hazards when <strong>in</strong> contact with<br />

toxic materials, liquids, dust or fumes.<br />

1.11 Select correct equipment and carry out basic fire fight<strong>in</strong>g techniques <strong>in</strong><br />

simulated conditions.<br />
