<strong>Skills</strong> <strong>Proficiency</strong> Certificate (<strong>Basic</strong> <strong>Fabrication</strong>,<br />

Weld<strong>in</strong>g and Pipework)<br />

Introduction<br />

The aim of this module is to enable the candidate to:<br />

a ma<strong>in</strong>ta<strong>in</strong> safe work<strong>in</strong>g conditions<br />

b mark out, cut to size, hole, bend and assemble, plate, sections of tube<br />

c develop patterns<br />

d lift and move loads, use scaffold platforms and ladders<br />

e jo<strong>in</strong> metal by solder<strong>in</strong>g and weld<strong>in</strong>g<br />

f cut metal by the oxy-fuel gas process<br />

g carry out the <strong>in</strong>spection and test<strong>in</strong>g of welds and identify possible causes of defects<br />

h produce pipel<strong>in</strong>es and pipe branches<br />

i construct curves of <strong>in</strong>tersection and surface developments<br />

j extract details from draw<strong>in</strong>gs and prepare work<strong>in</strong>g sketches.<br />

The use of national/local regulations and work<strong>in</strong>g practices must be <strong>in</strong>cluded <strong>in</strong> all<br />

practical competences.<br />

Practical competences<br />

The candidate must be able to do the follow<strong>in</strong>g:<br />

Health and Safety<br />

2.1 Select, use, clean and store personal safety equipment.<br />

2.2 Carry out safe work<strong>in</strong>g practices to prevent hazards and to ensure the safety of<br />

work<strong>in</strong>g personnel and members of the public.<br />

2.3 Use and store materials <strong>in</strong> a safe manner.<br />

2.4 Apply good housekeep<strong>in</strong>g practices at all times.<br />

Practices: eg clean tidy work areas, removal/disposal of waste products, no<br />

overhang<strong>in</strong>g sharp edges, no unmarked hot objects left on bench, gangways<br />

free from obstruction<br />

<strong>Fabrication</strong><br />

2.5 Use measur<strong>in</strong>g and mark<strong>in</strong>g out equipment appropriate to fabrication, weld<strong>in</strong>g<br />

and pipework.<br />

Equipment: scriber, straight edge, chalk and chalk l<strong>in</strong>e, dividers, trammels,<br />

eng<strong>in</strong>eers and flat squares, hammers, punches, tapes, flange and web gauges,<br />

backmark gauges<br />

2.6 Mark out<br />

a squares, rectangles; check<strong>in</strong>g cross corners for accuracy<br />

b circles, arcs<br />

c shapes, tangents<br />

d pipes, flanges<br />

e simple structural details <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g back marks, cross centres, edge distances.<br />

2.7 Produce and use templates.<br />
