This has been done with the involvement of all the major stakeholders that<br />
include: The Water Services Trust Fund (WSTF); Municipal Councils;<br />
Water Services Boards (WSBs); and Water Service Providers (WSP). WSPs<br />
manage public sanitation facilities through their respective WSBs who own<br />
the facilities.<br />
The rural households, schools and prisons operate and manage their respective<br />
sanitation facilities. The following technological options have been piloted<br />
successfully in Kenya by the project:<br />
• Primary schools;<br />
• Secondary schools and prisons; and<br />
• Public places (Markets and bus parks)<br />
Biogas is exploited from all systems using digesters for use as a source of<br />
renewable energy. The organic fertilizer from the sanitation facilities is<br />
thereafter used for agricultural production especially in schools and rural<br />
households.<br />
