This has been done with the involvement of all the major stakeholders that
include: The Water Services Trust Fund (WSTF); Municipal Councils;
Water Services Boards (WSBs); and Water Service Providers (WSP). WSPs
manage public sanitation facilities through their respective WSBs who own
the facilities.
The rural households, schools and prisons operate and manage their respective
sanitation facilities. The following technological options have been piloted
successfully in Kenya by the project:
• Primary schools;
• Secondary schools and prisons; and
• Public places (Markets and bus parks)
Biogas is exploited from all systems using digesters for use as a source of
renewable energy. The organic fertilizer from the sanitation facilities is
thereafter used for agricultural production especially in schools and rural
