10 NAVY ENGINEERING BULLETIN AUGUST 2002
• access to regular
workshops/seminars and
technical events, provided by
IEAust Divisions located in every
state and territory,
• access to Continuing Professional
Development (CPD),
• access to membership of
technical societies and interest
groups and
• Cost free participation. The RAN
pays for all fees associated with
the program.
Under the terms of the
RAN/IEAust agreement the IEAust
will continue to provide ongoing
assessment of reports, workshops
and seminars on report writing
and also workshops for Mentors
and Supervisors.
Pathways to gaining Chartered
Status
There are two pathways to
achieving Chartered Status:
• Participate in a graduate
development program and submit
regular career episode reports for
endorsement. The accumulated
career episode reports form what
is called the Engineering Practice
Report (EPR). The completed
engineering practice report is
submitted for assessment. Once
the engineering practice report
has been assessed the
successful applicant is then
required to attend a Professional
Interview (PI). The professional
interview is the verification of the
work the applicant has done and
if successful at the interview,
Chartered Status is awarded. The
program virtually guarantees that
the participant will achieve
chartered status as the
competencies have been
endorsed continuously over the
period of development or
formation. Whilst the
demonstration of competencies is
not time based, the majority of
engineers take from 3 to 6 years
to demonstrate the 3 compulsory
and 2 elective competencies (5
in all) for chartered status.
• Experienced engineers normally
write about their career episodes
in a retrospective way. There is
no need to undertake continuous
assessment as the Engineering
Practice Report can be written
and submitted for assessment
once the engineer is sure that all
competencies can be adequately
addressed. There is no guarantee
that they will have their report
endorsed, as they have not been
involved in any continuous
assessment. However, if the
report is not assessed as having
met all the necessary
competencies the applicant is
given feedback and invited to
address any deficiencies before
resubmitting the report and
qualifying for an interview.
From the above it is clear to see
that it is easier to record your
experiences as they happen
rather than trying to recall history.
However in the RAN you have a
distinct advantage. As sailors
and officers you have records of
postings, performance reports,
competency logs and course
records. All of which forms a rich
source of data that can be
utilised to write an excellent
report.
Entry requirements
The agreement encourages
participation at all levels (sailors
and officers). The minimum entry
requirements for membership of
the IEAust and entry into the
program are based on the
attainment of educational
qualifications in Engineering at
AQF6 (Advanced Diploma) or its
equivalent Rate Level Diploma.
For those sailors/officers who
are interested in the program but
are not sure of their educational
qualifications please contact
LCDR Dean Manning, Staff
Officer NPTC-C, Phone (02)
62664361, fax (02) 62664361
or email dean.manning@
cbr.defence.gov.au for further
advice.
Under the terms of the
IEAust/RAN agreement, the RAN
will pay for all program
participation fees, membership
fees and assessment fees whilst
the member remains in service.
