Beyond Time Management, Business with Purpose
Author: Dr. Robert J. Wright
Reviewed by: Tracy Hodge, Your Private Limousine
At what point is it ever “enough?” Many people spend years
pushing towards the “American Dream” of the ideal career,
impressive salary and perfect family… all the while feeling
empty inside. How can this be, after successfully reaching
each pinnacle of achievement that was
supposed to bring happiness?
Dr. Wright provides an opportunity
that includes a step-by-step worksheet
to begin developing one’s life-purpose
statement. This exercise includes
listing all strengths and skills, whether
developed or undeveloped, as well
as exploring wounds and unfinished
business that have influenced one’s
life. Finishing all steps will help one to
examine what is truly important and
fulfilling. This completion may be suppressed while chasing
other dreams. The exercises can pave the way to making
decisions in line with one’s higher purpose.
A common higher purpose applies to business, as well.
When goals lack coherence and meaning, employees do
not feel empowered to reach them nor understand their
meaning. Instilling an overall company purpose allows each
employee the satisfaction of being part of it and reaching
his or her own purpose. It motivates and brings fulfillment
rather than burnout.
As my own purpose is becoming clearer, I find that my goals
have more meaning than just the satisfaction of achieving
them. All of my business and personal goals continue to
bring me closer to my purpose. I believe it is evident to those
around me!
Love is the Killer App: How to Win Business and
Influence Friends
The New Year has arrived and I hope to conquer many
resolutions. One of them is the same every year: personal
and professional growth. If this is also on your list, I highly
recommend Love is The Killer App: How to Win Business and
Influence Friends, by former Yahoo! executive Tim Sanders.
Do not be fooled by the title! This is not a warm and fuzzy
love story, nor a motivational self-help book, but a “how to”
guide to increasing your overall value to colleagues, friends
and everyone around you.
Long gone are the days when
customers did business with one
company for many years because they
didn’t have a choice. The Internet has
revolutionized the way we do business
and has opened up a myriad of options.
Being a “lovecat” is the only way to stay
ahead in today’s competitive business
world—customers do business with
people they like!
By becoming a lovecat and sharing your
“intangibles,” you will be much more valuable. The intangibles
are your knowledge, network and compassion. Tim encourages
people to read extensively, network intelligently, strategically
grow their contact list and pay it forward. This last part is where
“love” is critical; your knowledge and network mean nothing if
you don’t share them with people who can benefit from these
areas. This is key to making you a lovecat and, hopefully,
irreplaceable in your business. Customers, colleagues and
all others in your circle will consider you an invaluable asset
due to your knowledge, network and compassion. They will be
drawn to lovecats!
“Purpose is the heart of the matter, the ‘why’ behind what
we do. A clear life purpose gives meaning to all activities,”
states Dr. Wright.
