Film Villain Is Renamed
To Avoid Montana Clash
From Western Edition
ST. MARY, MONT.—When an RKO Hollywood
film company arrived in Montana to
start filming "Cattle Queen of Montana." it
found itself in a political situation which required
an immediate change in the script.
The motion picture to be filmed in Glacier
park and on the Blackfeet Indian reservation,
involves a conflict among the Indians as to
whether they can hve in "peaceful coexistence"
with the whites, and another involving
a greedy white man who throws in with some
of the Indians to keep the whites out of
Montana for his own profit.
The problem arose when a Montana spectator
heard the name "Yellowtail" used to
identify the chief Indian villain in the script.
He cautioned the film company that it might
become involved in Montana politics as he
explained that a Montana candidate for the
U.S. Senate. Robert Yellowtail of the Crow
agency, bore the same name as the film
villain. The RKO officials made a quick decision
to change the name in the script.
The Indian villain, played by Tony Caruso,
an Italian-born American from Indiana, is
now known as Notcha Kowa. "We don't believe
there will be any Indian doubles of this
name," said the film officials.
Stanley Fleischer has been assigned the art
direction duties on Warners' "Jump Into
Hell." drama of the Indo-China war.
