KESKUSTORI
CENTRAL SQUARE
The Central Square, Keskustori, is the heart of
life in the city. It’s well worth a look at the Art
Nouveau buildings to the south of the square,
the Kauppahalli indoor market, the City Hall,
Tampere Theatre, the Old Church – and the
locals passing by.
Keskustori is outstanding all year round, in summer
accented by a fountain and flower beds,
and in the dusky winter by lighting remarkable
enough to receive the international City Light
Award.
Busses from Keskustori reach all destinations
in Tampere. Distances in the city centre are so
short they are easily covered on foot.
THE TAMMERKOSKI
RAPIDS
Tampere wouldn’t be the same without the surging Tammerkoski
rapids and the solemn stone guards on the Hämeensilta
bridge, statues designed by Wäinö Aaltonen.
The rapids connect lakes Näsijärvi and Pyhäjärvi. Old factory
buildings and chimneys along the shore illustrate the history
of Finland’s largest industrial city. They also create a unique
atmosphere, with beautiful redbrick facades forming an extraordinary
backdrop to a diverse and energetic city life.
LAUKONTORI
MARKET
Tampere – a beautiful city set between green
forests and blue lakes. For visitors this provides a
perfect opportunity to combine urban pursuits
with the tranquillity of nature. In summer this
can be done by taking a cruise on Lake Pyhäjärvi
or heading for a picnic on Viikinsaari island,
both from Laukontori quay.
While waiting for the cruise, small boutiques,
restaurants and a cinema in the neighbouring
Kehräsaari area offer a rewarding diversion.
