Established in 1779 on a narrow stretch of land between two scenic lakes, the Tampere of
today is a bustling city of more than 200,000 inhabitants. This third largest city in Finland
is known as a centre of culture, sport, events, research, education and business activity.
Tampere is 160 km from Helsinki, or about an hour and a half by car or train. There are direct
flight connections with Stockholm, Copenhagen, Riga, Frankfurt, London, Liverpool,
Dublin and, from April 2007, Bremen.

The City of Tampere was established
by King Gustavus III of Sweden in
1779. Finland’s first paper mill started
production just four years later. The
heart of the city from the earliest
beginnings was the Central Market
– today’s Keskustori Central Square.
Defining the city’s east and west were
the Tammerkoski Rapids, falling 18
metres between lakes Näsijärvi and
Pyhäjärvi, waterways reaching far to
the north and south.
Tampere’s history reflects the
modernization of a nation: Finland’s
first large-scale industrial enterprise,
the Finlayson cotton mill, rose by
the rapids in 1820. The first electric
light in the Nordic countries was lit in
Finlayson’s factory in 1882. Finland’s
first paper machine was engaged at
J. C. Frenckell & Son’s paper mill in
1842, and the Tampere linen and iron
industry company, later known as
Tampella, was established in 1861.
HISTORICAL
STREAMS AND TORRENTS
By the turn of the 20th century Tampere was the biggest industrial city in
Finland. The redbrick chimneys were cooling quickly by the 1970s, however, and
the following decade saw the factory facilities in a period of transformation. In
2004, the new Finlayson was awarded in the Difa-Award city planning competition,
as a centre of business and services.

KESKUSTORI
CENTRAL SQUARE
The Central Square, Keskustori, is the heart of
life in the city. It’s well worth a look at the Art
Nouveau buildings to the south of the square,
the Kauppahalli indoor market, the City Hall,
Tampere Theatre, the Old Church – and the
locals passing by.
Keskustori is outstanding all year round, in summer
accented by a fountain and flower beds,
and in the dusky winter by lighting remarkable
enough to receive the international City Light
Award.
Busses from Keskustori reach all destinations
in Tampere. Distances in the city centre are so
short they are easily covered on foot.
THE TAMMERKOSKI
RAPIDS
Tampere wouldn’t be the same without the surging Tammerkoski
rapids and the solemn stone guards on the Hämeensilta
bridge, statues designed by Wäinö Aaltonen.
The rapids connect lakes Näsijärvi and Pyhäjärvi. Old factory
buildings and chimneys along the shore illustrate the history
of Finland’s largest industrial city. They also create a unique
atmosphere, with beautiful redbrick facades forming an extraordinary
backdrop to a diverse and energetic city life.
LAUKONTORI
MARKET
Tampere – a beautiful city set between green
forests and blue lakes. For visitors this provides a
perfect opportunity to combine urban pursuits
with the tranquillity of nature. In summer this
can be done by taking a cruise on Lake Pyhäjärvi
or heading for a picnic on Viikinsaari island,
both from Laukontori quay.
While waiting for the cruise, small boutiques,
restaurants and a cinema in the neighbouring
Kehräsaari area offer a rewarding diversion.

HÄMEENPUISTO
AMURI, TALLIPIHA, MÄLTINRANTA
Designed as a firebreak in an 1830s
city plan, the Hämeenpuisto park was
planted between 1875 and 1909. The
trees with excess years have been felled,
and returned to the park as a work of art
carrying their memories and stories.
Hämeenpuisto leaves visitors with a strong
impression of culture and literature. The
TTT theatre is located along the park as
well as the architecturally famed Metso
main library, which also houses the
charming Moominvalley and the Mineral
Museum.
The older art of building is exhibited just
over the road: the Alexander Church
represents the Gothic Revival style.
A commentary from the 1952 Helsinki Olympics is broadcast
from a tube radio. Coffee simmers on a wood burning
stove. You can almost hear the children running in the yard
and the murmur of people coming home from work. A
taste of sugar candy from the shop completes this imaginary
journey at the Amuri Museum of Workers’ Housing.
The museum is signposted near the Vapauden patsas statue
in the Hämeenpuisto park. Walking back towards the rapids
provides an opportunity to admire the late 19th century
‘Little Palace’ in the north end of the park and drop into
the handicraft shops and café in the nearby Tallipiha stable
yards.
The old water refinery at Mältinranta is the exhibition venue
of the Tampere Artists’ Association. Mältinranta also provides
an opportunity for a dip in the rapids – all year round!

FINLAYSON
Finlayson towels and bedclothes are to be found in virtually all
Finnish households, and grandparents of many Tampere folk have
worked at the Finlayson cotton factory. The textile workers of
the early 20th century lived in housing provided by the factory
itself and took their children to day care and a school maintained
by the factory. In the factory’s shop they paid using the factory’s
own currency, and when they fell ill they were treated by doctors
in the factory’s hospital. For these workers, Finlayson was a city
within a city.
VAPRIIKKI
The Satakunnansilta bridge
takes you east of the Tammerkoski
rapids. In the old Tampella
workshop, Museum Centre
Vapriikki houses a permanent
exhibition on the Tampere
Region, the Shoe Museum
and the Finnish Hockey Hall of
Fame plus visiting exhibitions.
Near the factory buildings, at the edge of an English-style garden,
are the Finlayson Palace, previously the factory manager’s residence
and now a restaurant, and the Finlayson Church, which is
today the most popular wedding church in Tampere.
Established in 1820 by James Finlayson, the culturally and historically
valuable cotton factory and its surroundings are situated on
the shore of the Tammerkoski rapids at the northern end of the
Keskustori Central Square, right in the city centre.
Today the old factory milieu provides an atmospheric setting for
culture. The history of the factory area is exhibited at the Werstas
Central Museum of Labour and in the Steam Engine Museum.
Other places of interest in the area include the Rupriikki Media
Museum, the unique Spy Museum, a graphics workshop and the
rotating art displays at the exhibition venue in the Väinö Linna
square. There is a waffle café and a gift shop as part of the Wärjäämö
art workshop as well as a display of art created by mentally
handicapped adults.
Finlayson’s old spinning mill is now the Siperia business centre,
providing a roof for businesses, museums, restaurants and cafés.
The old weaving hall houses a cinema complex and the Plevna
brewery restaurant.
CITY CENTRE
EAST SIDE
In Tampere, old and new often meet harmoniously.
The business centre east of the Tammerkoski rapids is
watched over by the mighty Tampere Cathedral, a jewel
of the early 20th century National Romantic style with
its famous works of art. To the south, on the Sorinaukio
Square, is the Orthodox Church built in the Neo Byzantine
style.
Here, too, an old factory milieu lends character to
new business activity. The dye works of the one-time
broadcloth factory today house the Verkaranta Arts
and Crafts Centre, and the former factory office above
is now the Tampere City Tourist Office. The Koskikeskus
Shopping Centre and Tampere Stadium represent more
modern architecture.

TAMMELA & KALEVA
The Tammelantori market offers a splendid opportunity
to get acquainted with the local food culture. Taste the
pride of Tampere – black sausage with lingonberry jam
and perhaps some milk. The looks might raise suspicions,
but it’s very likely that you’ll be back to the sausage stall
for more!
PYYNIKKI & PISPALA
Finns and saunas are inseparable. Tampere offers an
opportunity to immerse oneself in the experience with
other sauna lovers at the century-old Rajaportti sauna,
the oldest functional public sauna in Finland. Rajaportti
gives a sense of the old-time atmosphere of the working
people’s city.
the agenda inside this architecturally fascinating
building are classical and popular music, exhibitions
and a wide variety of cultural events. The
University of Tampere campus borders alongside.
Across the Sorsapuisto park is a remarkable example
of modern architecture, the Kaleva Church
designed by Reima and Raili Pietilä. With its various
details and a form that resembles the early Christian
fish symbol, the building as a whole is a work of art
which impresses aficionados of architecture and
laymen alike.
Aspects of local history and the stories of families in
Tampere converge at the Kalevankangas cemetery.
The Old Customs House cultural centre has become a
concept among Finnish rock enthusiasts. The more than
a century-old building is situated close to the railway station.
It’s well worth checking the gig calendar in advance
to reserve an evening of good music.
High-standard seminars, domestic meetings and international
congresses are arranged at Tampere Hall. Also on
The Rajaportti sauna is set in nostalgic surroundings in
the Pispala district. The beautiful wooden houses on the
slopes of the Pispala ridge and astonishing lake views
radiate the original Tampere spirit and living history.
Beside Pispala, west of the city centre, is another distinctive
district rich in tradition, namely the beautiful Pyynikki
ridge. Formed during the ice age, Pyynikki is considered
to be the world’s highest gravel ridge and has received
recognition as a nationally valuable landscape. The Pyynikki
observation tower offers a chance to take in some
beautiful scenery as well as enjoy a delicious doughnut in
the ground floor café.
From the observation tower, sightseers can either
continue their journey down Pyynikki’s slopes to the
swimming beach on the shores of Lake Pyhäjärvi and the
distinctive summer theatre with its rotating auditorium,
or stroll along the forest trails to Pispala.

THE POET’S WAY ON LAKE NÄSIJÄRVI
A beauty of a steamship close to 100 years old, Tarjanne
sales from Mustalahti quay on Tuesdays, Thursdays and
Saturdays between 5.6. and 12.8. Departs at 10:45, stopping
in Ruovesi at 15:10 and arriving in Virrat at 18:30. Returns
from Virrat on Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays at 10:45,
stopping in Ruovesi at 14:00 and arriving in Tampere at
18:30. Fully licensed restaurant services on board as well as
a few cabins for overnight stays. A return trip can be made
in one day, travelling one way by bus. Also a Tampere-Virrat-Tampere
route between 18. – 19.8. as well as thematic

Numerous museums in Tampere portray themes ranging from the history of industrializing
Finland, the life of Lenin and the world of the spy to ice hockey and Tove Jansson’s
much loved Moomin characters.
Places of interest for those who appreciate art include the Sara Hildén, Tampere and
Hiekka art museums and the guest exhibitions at Finlayson. For 2007, the museum
displays have a strong influence from eastern cultures.
Opening hours may differ on public holidays and on days preceding public holidays. Closed during exhibition changeovers.
Admission fees for special exhibitions are usually higher. Unless otherwise stated, children’s tickets are valid for children aged 7-16.

Society of Finland.

Zhang Xiaogang (b. 1958) studied at the Sichua Academy
of Fine Arts, works in Beijing and is the big name in
Chinese contemporary art. The exhibition presents paintings
from the famous Bloodline series inspired by family
photographs destroyed during the Cultural Revolution and
today’s one-child policy. Also on display are new paintings
and photographs made especially for the exhibition.

JADE SUIT
The Han Dynasty ruled China at the same time as Europe
was ruled by the Roman Empire, and during its reign
art and science flourished. Han prince Liu Sheng died in
113 BCE. His tomb, opened in 1968, is one of the most
significant archaeological discoveries in China. Prince Liu
Sheng and his consort Dou Wan were buried in suits made
from thousands of jade pieces sewn together with gold
wire, made over several years during their lifetime. The
exhibition of Princess Dou Wan’s jade suit and other items,
jewellery and utensils from the tomb forms a vivid display
of one aspect of life in ancient China.
THE REAL TOY STORY
The Real Toy Story exhibition is a room-sized installation
comprising 20,000 toys made in China with photographs
of toy factory workers taken by Michael Wolf. Wolf has
acquired the toys mainly from Californian flea markets.
The installation paints a perplexing image of the scale of
the industry in China, and is also an exciting reflection of
how toys have changed since the end of the 1980s to the
present day.
CHINESE PROPAGANDA ART FROM THE MAO ERA
A smiling, warm and rosy cheeked Chairman Mao Zedong
was a key motif in Chinese propaganda art from the founding
of the People’s Republic of China in 1949 through to
the early 1980s. Printed in large numbers, posters of the
effigy spread to homes, schools, street sides and newspapers.
They portrayed Mao everywhere: in factories, fields
and while swimming, always surrounded by smiling people
looking strong and faithful to the ideology. China was on
its way to greatness and happiness.

CELEBRATES ITS 100TH ANNIVERSARY
Tampere Cathedral is one of Finland’s most original artworks. Designed by
Lars Sonck, the grey-granite church with red-tile roof is an example of the Art
Nouveau style. The frescoes and stained glass windows are the work of Hugo
Simberg, and the altarpiece ‘Resurrection’ of Magnus Enckell.
This anniversary year includes several cultural events and projects such as works
for choir and orchestra and concerts by top-class singers. The festival week starting
on 19.5. offers something for all ages.
DRAMA ON THE 1918 CIVIL WAR AT TAMPERE CATHEDRAL
‘Days of wrath 1918’ premieres at Tampere Cathedral on 23.3. Directed by Kari
Hakala and written by Tytti Issakainen, the performance is part of the Cathedral’s
100th anniversary celebrations. Partners in the drama’s implementation
include the TT Theatre, the TTT Theatre and the City of Tampere.
In 1918, fierce fighting broke out in many places in Tampere, including around
the Cathedral. The church provided a shelter for close to two thousand refuges
and the drama depicts these events through the eyes of a working-class and
bourgeois family. There’s a strong accent on music from the early 20th century.

In Tampere ice hockey is more than just a game – it’s almost an obligation for those

Throughout the winter, Tampere’s two top-level clubs, Ilves and Tappara, battle for
dominance in the Finnish Championship League at the Hakametsä ice stadium. Enthusiasts

When the ice hockey players are on their summer holidays, fans of team sports head out
