Led by the excellent passing attack of QB Steve<br />
T~yl?r, the Aztec Papooses sported a split season,<br />
wInnIng 3 and losing 3. Taylor's favorite targets<br />
were ends Tom Barnett and John Boyles while<br />
the ground attack was led by hard charging bull,<br />
Dale Hawley. Don Royal, Guard, and Center Bob<br />
Korzep, also played key roles in the Papoose's<br />
tough schedule. This year's team, deeper and more<br />
experie~ced than the previous year, won over<br />
Oceanside jC., <strong>San</strong> Fernando Valley TV and Lana<br />
Beach <strong>State</strong> JV, while losino to USC and UCLA<br />
Frosh and Imperial Valley College.<br />
The Aztec Harriers paced by Ernie Portee, Jim<br />
Montgomery and Mik; Golden, ?reezed t~ough<br />
the cinder fields to bnng <strong>San</strong> DIego <strong>State</strong> ItS 10th<br />
CCAA Championship in 12 years. Portee ran the<br />
L.A. <strong>State</strong> 3.2 mile course in 15: 38.7 to break the<br />
16.21 record set by James Carrol of U.C.S.~. the<br />
previous year. The Aztecs were rated the third<br />
best Cross Country squad in the state after<br />
winning over such teams as Long Beach <strong>State</strong> and<br />
U.S.C.<br />
