A Phenol and Nitrite Free Soluble Oil
Description
CASTROL CLEAREDGE ® EP 690 is a phenol and nitrite free soluble oil. Forms a
transparent blue/green emulsion.
Application
Designed to cover the widest range of metalworking operations. Suitable for metal cutting
and grinding of ferrous and non-ferrous materials, including copper and its alloys,
aluminium and its alloys including high silicon grades, stainless steel, nimonic alloys and
ceramic materials. Suitable for use in central coolant systems because of its versatility and
long service life.
Benefits and Qualities
• Highly stable emulsion. Long service life. Economy.
• Phenol free. Lower disposal costs. Economy.
• High capacity to cope with tramp oil contamination. Emulsion does not break down.
Long service life.
• Can be used on a wide range of materials and operations. Versatile. Allows product
rationalisation – one grade for all uses.
• Detergent product. Assists in machine cleanliness. Less system maintenance.
• Wide dilution range. Versatile. Rationalisation – one grade for all uses.
• Wide water hardness tolerance. Suitable for all types of Australian tap water. No
special water treatment necessary.
Dilutions
CASTROL CLEAREDGE ® EP 690 is designed for use at concentration of 4-8% depending
on degree of severity of the operation. Do not run below 3.5% or above 10%.
Measuring Emulsion Strength
To ensure optimum performance of the emulsion, check the emulsion strength weekly, and
adjust if necessary.
A quick, easy and accurate method is by using a refractometer, such as the Atago N10
Hand Sugar Refractometer, available from Castrol. The following graph converts the
refractometer readings to percentage concentration for CASTROL CLEAREDGE ® EP 690.
Method of Use
• Zero instrument according to manufacturer's instructions, including making
allowance for
• temperature variations.
• Allow coolant to circulate and then take representative sample of coolant from
• preferably from the 'clean' tank. Avoid picking up tramp oil. If necessary, allow
sample to stand a
• few minutes and remove the oil from the surface.
• Pour a large drop of coolant sample on the prism and close flap. Ensure a full film of
coolant is
• trapped between the flap and the prism. Hold the instrument up to the light and take
the percentage
• reading.
• Convert the reading to give the concentration of the coolant from the following
graph.
• After use rinse the refractometer flap and prism surfaces in tap water and wipe dry.
