Fulda’s Sights
The Residence Gardens [2]
Enclosed by walls and ornate iron railings, the Residence Gardens
were an integral part of the architectural concept. The Gardens
consist of several different areas: the two terraces (in front of
the Residence and the Orangery), the low area between the terraces
(the parterre) with its large fountain and the former boxwood
garden which stretches out to the east.
The Orangery and the Flora Vase [3]
The Orangery
Erected in 1728, the 6.8m high Flora
Vase ( by Johann Friedrich von
Humbach) is a statue of the goddess
of flowers. The statue is an extremely
fine example of baroque sculpture.
Entrance to the Residence Gardens
In the course of the centuries, the style of the gardens has
changed to suit contemporary tastes. For the Hesse State Garden
Show in 1994 the gardens were returned to a baroque lay-out.
(although not conforming to baroque style, the beautiful old
trees were left untouched).
The building behind this sculpture
is the Orangery which
was built between 1721 and 1724.
It was used for the princeabbots’
summer parties.
Today, the baroque banquet
rooms provide a stylish venue for
many events. In good weather
you can simply sit in the sun
and enjoy the view of the Residence
and its gardens.
