St. Peter’s Priory Church [35]
St. Andrew’s Priory Church [31]
In 835 a monastery and a church were built by Rabanus Maurus
as the last resting place of St. Lioba. The Carolingian crypt of
the church has survived up to today. The 9th century frescos
give us an insight into the theological thought of the time. After
thorough restoration the church is again open for visitors. Guided
tours of the church can be organised after arrangements have
been made with the Benedictine convent, Cella St. Lioba.
St. Andrew’s Church is part of an exceptionally
beautiful architectural ensemble
consisting of a monastery and a church
from the first half of the 11th century.
In terms of art history the crypt ranks with the very best. Inaugurated
in 1023, it is a unique example of an enclosed, frescoed
sacral room from the Ottonic period. While the church has been
changed several times in the course of history (particularly due
to the baroque modifications in 1766), the crypt has remained
untouched since the church was built. A fifteen-year period
of restoration was completed in 2006 and the crypt was been
reopened to the public. Crossing the Fulda-Aue meadows,
St. Andrew’s Priory Church is a pleasant fifteen-minute walk
from the cathedral.
