performance of TPS (U), its acquisition<br />
is expected to improve <strong>TPSEA</strong>L’s<br />
consolidated profitability and earningsper-share<br />
affording current and future<br />
shareholders higher returns. It will be<br />
recalled that the acquisition was first<br />
announced and approved in principle<br />
by the shareholders of <strong>TPSEA</strong>L at the<br />
<strong>Annual</strong> General Meeting held on 24th<br />
May 2010. However, the acquisition<br />
is dependent on <strong>TPSEA</strong>L receiving<br />
regulatory approvals from the Nairobi<br />
Securities Exchange, Capital Markets<br />
Authority under the Capital Markets<br />
Act and final approval by <strong>TPSEA</strong>L<br />
shareholders which is planned to be<br />
obtained at an extra ordinary general<br />
meeting to be convered once the<br />
regulatory approvals are in hand.<br />
It is also noteworthy that during the<br />
year under review, <strong>Serena</strong> <strong>Hotels</strong> are<br />
proud to have been honoured with<br />
awards and accolades from: Wellness<br />
Champions Award by the APHIA11<br />
Coast Project – Gold Award; Best Levy<br />
Payer in the Accommodation Category,<br />
by the Kenya Tourism Awards 2011;<br />
Trip Advisor Rating; Eco-Tourism<br />
Enterprise 2011 by Eco tourism Kenya;<br />
World Travel Awards 2011; Conde Nast<br />
Traveler 2011 Choice Awards – Best<br />
Resorts in Africa; TASOTA (Tanzania<br />
Society of Travel Agents) Award for the<br />
Best Tourist Hotel/ Hotel Chain on the<br />
Safari Circuit; Rwanda Development<br />
Board Performance Awards – Winner in<br />
the Hospitality Category, Runners-up in<br />
the best investor of the year category<br />
and second place in the best customer<br />
service category; and COYA (Company<br />
of the Year Award) – Rwanda Chapter<br />
for the strong <strong>Serena</strong> brand, human<br />
resource and investment policies.<br />
The Group continued to implement<br />
ICT initiatives, appropriate Human<br />
Resources Management (HRM)<br />
practices and sound Corporate Social<br />
Responsibility (CSR) programs which<br />
complement its long-term business<br />
strategies, just as it continues to pursue<br />
new business opportunities in line with<br />
its diversification policy and strategy.<br />
Additional details on the ICT, HRM<br />
and CSR activities and initiatives are<br />
incorporated in the Statement from<br />
the Managing Director which has been<br />
included on Pages 14 to 16 of this<br />
<strong>Annual</strong> <strong>Report</strong>.<br />
With the expansion of the <strong>Serena</strong> Group<br />
from a portfolio of 4 properties in the<br />
1970s to a collection of 24 luxury hotels,<br />
resorts, camps and safari lodges in 2011,<br />
<strong>Serena</strong> are proud and grateful that we<br />
have been able to play a leading role in<br />
the economic growth and development<br />
of the 6 Countries in Africa in which we<br />
have presence. As market leaders, it is<br />
our expectation that as we work together<br />
with the Governments within the East<br />
African Region to generate economic<br />
growth, the respective Governments<br />
will continue to focus attention on<br />
efforts aimed at creating a buoyant<br />
tourism industry by providing the<br />
essential infrastructure whilst avoiding<br />
the pitfalls of undue haste, overdevelopment<br />
and speculation; security;<br />
and product initiatives that are needed<br />
to enable the sector offer competitive<br />
services and employment opportunities.<br />
The <strong>Serena</strong> Group believes that it is<br />
through the provision of an enabling<br />
business environment that we all can<br />
help realize the East African Region’s<br />
full tourism potential by making the<br />
most of its unique combination of rich<br />
bio-diversity and cultural assets and<br />
heritage.<br />
To conclude, on behalf of the Board, I<br />
would like to congratulate and thank the<br />
Company’s Management and Staff for<br />
their continued diligence and dedication<br />
without which the commendable results<br />
realized during 2011 would not have<br />
been achieved. I would also like to<br />
acknowledge, with appreciation, the<br />
invaluable support from my colleagues<br />
on the Board which has helped to steer<br />
the Group’s business activities and<br />
strategies successfully during year 2011.<br />
I wish to recognise, with gratitude, the<br />
vital support, confidence, loyalty and<br />
trust that we have continued to receive<br />
from our shareholders, customers<br />
and other stakeholders within the<br />
industry. Finally, I wish to thank the<br />
Governments within the East African<br />
Region for facilitating the growth of the<br />
tourism industry, and also the various<br />
regulatory authorities as well as the<br />
other stakeholders for their continued<br />
catalytic support which is critical for the<br />
sustained growth of the industry across<br />
