rounded groups between the choanae.<br />

Color above light<br />

or dark brown, with large or small irregular<br />

black spots on dorsal surface <strong>of</strong> back and thighs. These spots<br />

are sometimes greatly elongated, with light centers. Sides, anterior<br />

portions <strong>of</strong> femur and the under surfaces, are yellowish<br />

or whitish, spotted or reticulated with black. Lower sides <strong>of</strong> body<br />

and under surfaces <strong>of</strong> hind limbs are a rich salmon-red. Specimens<br />

from the San Pedro Martir Mountains, Lower <strong>California</strong> are<br />

much darker and show none <strong>of</strong> the red so characteristic <strong>of</strong> those<br />

from northern <strong>California</strong>. Sides and anterior portions <strong>of</strong> thigh<br />

<strong>of</strong> Lower <strong>California</strong> specimens are yellowish, strongly reticulated<br />

with black.<br />

Distribution.— This large frog ranges from Del Norte County,<br />

<strong>California</strong> to<br />

northern Lower <strong>California</strong>.<br />

In <strong>California</strong>, it has been collected in Del Norte (Requa), Siskiyou<br />

(Lower Klamath Lake), Humboldt (Areata, Eureka), Trinity<br />

(Gumboot Lake), Shasta (Redding), Mendocino (three miles west<br />

from summit <strong>of</strong> Mount Sanhedrin, Mendocino City, Gualala),<br />

Sonoma (mouth <strong>of</strong> Russian Kiver, Petaluma), Napa (Calistoga,<br />

Luscol, Napa), Marin (four miles west from Inverness, San Rafael,<br />

Sausalito), Alameda (Berkeley, Oakland, Temescal, Thornhill<br />

Station), San Francisco (Presidio, Golden Gate Park), San Mateo<br />

(South San Francisco, Woodside), Santa Clara (Isabel Creek near<br />

Mount Hamilton, Stanford University, Los Gatos), Santa Cruz<br />

(Boulder Creek, Santa Cruz), Monterey (Monterey, Pacific Grove,<br />

Carmel), San Luis Obispo<br />

(Shandon, Pozo, Edna, Oceano), Placer<br />

(Michigan Bluff), El Dorado, Merced (Snelling, Gadwell), Fresno<br />
