Daytime – The period between 7.00 am and 6.00 pm.
Development approval – An approval required to expand or develop a new poultry farm under the
Sustainable Planning Act 2009 and IDAS system.
Dispersion modelling – Computer-based software modelling used to mathematically simulate
plume dispersion under varying atmospheric conditions. It is used to calculate special and temporal
fields of concentrations and particle deposition due to emissions from various source types.
Environmental harm – Defined in the Environmental Protection Act 1994 as any adverse effect,
or potential adverse effect (whether temporary or permanent and of whatever magnitude, duration
or frequency) on an environmental value, including environmental nuisance.
Environmental nuisance – Defined in the Environmental Protection Act 1994 as unreasonable
interference or likely interference with an environmental value caused by:
aerosols, fumes, light, noise, odour, particles or smoke
an unhealthy, offensive or unsightly condition because of contamination
other ways prescribed by regulation.
Environmentally Relevant Activity (ERA) – An activity prescribed in regulation if:
a contaminant will or may be released into the environment when the activity is carried out
release of the contaminant will or may cause environmental harm.
Environmental value – Defined in the Environmental Protection Act 1994 as:
a quality or physical characteristic of the environment that is conducive to ecological health or
public amenity or safety

Evening – The period between 6.00 pm and 10.00 pm.
Friable – A material that crumbles easily.
General environmental duty – Defined in the Environmental Protection Act 1994 as, a person
must not carry out any activity that causes, or is likely to cause, environmental harm unless the
person takes all reasonable and practicable measures to prevent or minimise the harm (the
general environmental duty).
Grower – Farmer who provides shedding and the care of birds from when they arrive on the farm
until they are removed for processing.
Groundwater – All water below the land surface that is free to move under the influence of gravity.
IDAS – The Integrated Development Application System.
Integrator – Company that owns birds and provides food and technical advice for the grower to
grow-out birds until they are picked up for processing.
Local government – The council for the area in which the existing or proposed poultry farm is
located.
Major water supply storage – Any public water supply storage, lake, lagoon, marsh or swamp.
