Borrow pits were left uncovered and trimmed to be used as water ponds for wild animals and<br />
cattle. Trees used by birds as breeding p<strong>la</strong>ces were specially i<strong>de</strong>ntified and left untouched.<br />
Drifts rather than culverts were constructed on the migration corridor to act as convenient<br />
crossing areas for the wild animals.<br />
Other p<strong>la</strong>ces visited: Several <strong>de</strong>legates visited the Esi<strong>la</strong>lei Maasai Women Cultural Boma<br />
located along the road while some visited the famous Ngorongoro Conservation Area where<br />
they saw many wild animals. Ngorongoro Conservation Area became a World Heritage site<br />
in 1979. Ngorongoro Conservation area is endowed with wild animals that inclu<strong>de</strong> the big<br />
five i.e. rhinoceros, lion, leopard, elephant and buffalo. Other wild animals found there are<br />
cheetahs, giraffes, zebras, gazelles, and wild beast. Land in the conservation area is multiuse;<br />
it is unique in Tanzania as the only conservation area providing protection status for<br />
wildlife whilst allowing human habitation. As such <strong>la</strong>nd use is controlled to prevent negative<br />
effects on the wildlife popu<strong>la</strong>tion, for example cultivation is prohibited at all but subsistence<br />
levels. Other <strong>de</strong>legates went to the Maasai Museum and Meserani Snake Park located near<br />
Arusha.<br />
