telling the story: TRansformative Education The University of Dayton educates for transformation and prepares a new generation of servant-leaders. A distinctive element of a University of Dayton education is the seamless connection between education and action. This cultivation of practical wisdom stood out in the world of higher education and was widely reported. telling the story: transformative education UD student Lori Hanna’s work on solar cookers and sterilization devices was the subject of a National Catholic Reporter cover story on “Social Entrepreneurs: Compassionate Capitalists.” The story reported how a UD education enables students to work collaboratively across disciplines in service to others and highlighted the ETHOS (Engineers in Technical, Humanitarian Opportunities of Service-Learning) program as well as the business plan competition. Lori Hanna USA Today went “Beyond the College Rankings” and examined results from the National Survey of Student Engagement. UD ranked above the national average for research universities in all five benchmark areas: level of academic challenge; active and collaborative learning; student-faculty interaction; enriching educational experience; and supportive campus environment. The story singled out UD’s writing programs as exceptional, quoting English professor Stephen Wilhoit. In October, The Princeton Review and Entrepreneur magazine named the University of Dayton’s entrepreneurship program fifth best in the nation for the second year in a row. CNN Money, the Cincinnati Business Courier and The Associated Press wrote about the news, which was also picked up by the Houston Chronicle, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, Richmond Times- Dispatch, Fort Worth Star-Telegram, The Cincinnati Enquirer and Canadian Press, among others. The first NASDAQ remote closing bell ceremony at a university campus and a stellar line-up of speakers brought the University of Dayton’s RISE VIII Global Student Investment Forum international attention. CNBC and Bloomberg Television carried the remote closing live worldwide. FOX News, Reuters, Bloomberg News, Dow Jones, The Associated Press and Market News International also filed stories that were translated by literally hundreds of Web sites and news outlets internationally. The Chronicle of Higher Education, BusinessWeek, The Kansas City Star, The (Cleveland) Plain Dealer and The Buffalo News all featured UD in stories about the growing trend of allowing finance students to manage millions of dollars of university investments. These stories ran throughout the year and highlighted the trustees’ new $4-million commitment to the fund, which will bring it to $11 million, and interviews with finance professor David Sauer about hands-on education and UD’s national student portfolio competition.
