telling the story: Stem research The University of Dayton is a leading institution of scholarship and research in the physical sciences, technology, engineering and mathematics. Research volume at UD grew 65 percent in the past five years, reaching a record $75 million in sponsored research in 2007. The media reported on increased investments in UD research programs and scientific advances that save lives, improve quality of life and shape the future. telling the story: STEM RESEARCH Researchers at the University of Dayton Research Institute made headlines around the world. UDRI’s work to demonstrate the “real-world” potential of fuel cells in electronic devices made news in MSN Money, Fuel Cell Today and Eco Friend. Researchers used the fuel cells to power laptop computers donated to a Dayton nonprofit organization. UDRI’s 45-foot, light-gas gun was hailed as the “world’s fastest” in a Wired magazine feature. Aviation Week, The Columbus Dispatch and Akron Beacon Journal featured it as well. Industry Week and Chemical & Engineering News magazines highlighted UDRI’s Center for Multifunctional Polymer Nanocomposites and Devices as the country’s first facility to allow manufacturers to try out nanomaterials in their products before making a large investment. UDRI’s work on thermal protection systems for future space vehicles was featured in Flight International magazine. UDRI scientists Doug and Karolyn Hansen grabbed headlines when they grew oyster shells outside of an oyster. Aviation Week, Military, Air Force Link, SpaceDaily, Air Safety Week and Business and Commercial Aviation among others wrote about the discovery. The shells have the potential to create tough and durable coating for aircraft and even lead to medical implants that won’t be rejected by the human body. Nanotechnology research at UD got a nod in an Akron Beacon Journal story on the Nano App Summit in Cleveland. National online sites Nanotech Now, Nanotechnology and Development News and Nanowerk picked up a To protect spacecraft that repeatedly leave and re-enter the Earth’s atmosphere, researchers at the University of Dayton are working on materials that can withstand exposure to surface heat of 3,000 degrees Fahrenheit. Dayton Daily News story about the work of chemical and materials engineering professor Liming Dai and assistant biology professor Yiling Hong. When Dai and Hong introduced carbon nanotubes into mouse embryonic stem cells, they found that carbon nanotubes could damage DNA.
