telling the story: academic excellence UD’s faculty and other professionals engage in scholarship, research and artistic creation that enriches student learning and contributes substantially and meaningfully to the region, the nation and the world. Toy recalls, fraud, racism, politics — University of Dayton scholars looked deeply into some of the hottest issues of the day. Their published studies sometimes helped advance understanding of critical issues and sometimes uncovered hidden dangers. telling the story: ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE While manufacturers were recalling millions of toys in 2007, UD researcher Keri Brown Kirschman, assistant professor of psychology, warned the nation that dangerous recalled toys often resurface on eBay and other online auction sites. Kirschman’s research, originally published in the journal Injury Prevention, was cited in an Associated Press story and was a lead story on MSNBC. The Early Show on CBS and KOMO-TV in Seattle interviewed Kirschman, who was also quoted in more than 740 media outlets globally. In October, eBay announced a new policy to help prevent recalled products from being sold on its site. The Chronicle of Philanthropy and The New York Times interviewed accounting professor Janet S. Greenlee, who co-wrote research that made the nonprofit world take notice. The study estimated the annual cost of thefts from charities at $40 billion, or about 13 percent of money given. University of Dayton faculty received extensive national and regional coverage in the days leading up to the March 4 Ohio presidential primary. Christopher Duncan, chair of the political science department, emerged as a sought-after political pundit. Cox News Service, Bloomberg News, The (Cleveland) Plain Dealer and the Ottawa (Ontario) Citizen were among the national and regional media who interviewed him during the presidential primary race. Even before the primaries began, the Catholic News Service sought Duncan for his opinion on the role of the Internet in the presidential campaign. Nancy Martorano, assistant professor of political science, talked about exit polling and the Ohio vote on Bloomberg Radio’s Simply Put the night of the Ohio primary. The radio program reaches all of New York City and extends to Philadelphia and New England, with more than a million potential listeners on satellite radio. The Associated Press and The (Cleveland) Plain Dealer also interviewed her for commentary on the Democratic primary.
