UD assistant political science professor Jason Pierce’s book about Australian judges, Inside the Mason Court Revolution: The High Court of Australia Transformed, was a hot topic Down Under. The Australian, The Canberra Times and others wrote about some judges’ “activist” comments and wanted Pierce to reveal the names of those judges, but he refused. “I conducted the interviews under strict confidentiality and anonymity and I think that needs to be respected,” Pierce told The Australian. ‘ A mature adult would be expected, when they understand they have committed a mistake, to recognize the mistake and do something to fix it. I think a nation should be held to the same standard. This was a massive mistake, and we ought to get out.’ —Law professor Tom Hagel on the war in Iraq, Hardball with Chris Matthews Tom Hagel, professor of law and Vietnam War veteran, talked with Chris Matthews on Hardball about Sen. In an op-ed piece in The Christian Science Monitor, education professor Thomas Hunt argued that education, like religion, must be a matter of freedom and conscience. “Americans would revolt if the government forced them to join a state-established church. ... Yet when some parents choose not to submit their children to the government-operated school system — whose curriculum and culture embody beliefs and values with which they disagree — they still must pay taxes to support the system,” Hunt wrote. Lasley also made frontpage news analyzing Ohio’s value-added models that measure student improvement. The Baltimore Sun Thomas J. Lasley II was quoted in an op-ed piece about charter schools. The Associated Press, TV news Web sites in Columbus, Toledo and Cleveland Law professor Charles Hallinan talked about the debate over whether Ohio should scrap touch-screen voting machines. 700 WLW-AM History assistant professor David Darrow, director of UD’s international studies program and a native Iowan, talked about the Iowa caucuses. The Associated Press, 93 outlets including ABC and CNN Money Auto historian John Heitmann discussed General Motors plant closures following the announcement to close the Moraine, Ohio, assembly plant. The Associated Press, nearly 60 outlets including the International Herald Tribune, FOX News and The Washington Post Lori Shaw, dean of students in the School of Law, analyzed the “complicated” verdict against a Canton police officer who killed his pregnant girlfriend. USA Radio Law professor Tom Hagel discussed liability issues in the Minneapolis bridge collapse. The Associated Press, national and international outlets including ABC, CBS, CNN, FOX News and Newsday Dennis Turner, law professor, discussed O.J.
