UKHO CARTOGRAPHIC TRAINING ACCREDITATION The UKHO has been recognised by the International Advisory Board as meeting its M8 Standard of Competence for Nautical Cartographers - Category B. The advisory board is jointly constituted by the Fédération Internationale des Géomètres (FIG), International Hydrographic Organisation (IHO), and the International Cartographic Association (ICA). The United Kingdom Hydrographic Office was the first organisation in the world to gain the FIG – IHO – ICA Category B in relation to its Hydrographic Data Processing and Marine Cartography course with specialism The Electronic Navigational Chart (ENC). The Category B status is awarded to programmes “which provide a practical comprehension of nautical cartography for individuals with the skills to carry out routine nautical cartographic tasks”. (M8 First Edition Standards of Competence for Nautical Cartographers) All UKHO modules are designed to be highly participative with sessions followed up with practical exercises. The course is currently offered in a modular format: ● Marine Cartography ● Hydrographic Data Processing ● The Electronic Navigational Chart Each module is of five weeks duration and students will be issued with a certificate of attendance for each module. When delegates have successfully completed all three modules they will be issued with a certificate of programme completion which states that: This programme has been recognised as meeting the requirements for FIG/IHO/ICA Standards of Competence for Nautical Cartographers, at the Category B level, with Specialism The Electronic Navigational Chart (ENC). UKHO CARTOGRAPHIC TRAINING TRAINER PROFILE Mr Peter Westcott MCIPD, FBCartS Cartographic Training Manager United Kingdom Hydrographic Office Peter joined the UKHO in 1974 as a cartographic draughtsman and has been involved in the compilation and maintenance of Admiralty Charts covering many different areas of the world. He has also worked in other specialist areas within UKHO including a Marine Science branch involved in the analysis of seabed sediment movement. In 1997 he was chosen to represent the UKHO on a working exchange to the South African Hydrographic Office. Later that year he joined the Cartographic Training Branch at UKHO, where he was responsible for designing and delivering training courses in Hydrographic Data Processing and Marine Cartography and developing new training modules and documentation to support emerging digital compilation techniques and processes. In 2001 Peter transferred to the Electronic Navigational Chart (ENC) branch within UKHO as Training Manager. During this time he was responsible for the design and delivery of ENC training for UKHO and international students. In 2004 Peter was promoted to become Training Manager of the expanding Cartographic Training Branch which now includes ENC Training. He is currently responsible for the provision of technical training, the management of the training team, expansion of international training and the implementation of learning and development initiatives for UKHO cartographic staff. Peter is a qualified trainer, gaining the CIPD Certificate in Training Practice, and is a Chartered Member of the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development. Peter was awarded Fellowship of the British Cartographic Society in 2005.
