COURSE: THE ELECTRONIC CHART<br />
Description<br />
An introduction to electronic chart display<br />
information systems and the use of official<br />
chart data within such systems.<br />
The course comprises of 2 sessions;<br />
1. How the data (S-57) is generated, maintained<br />
and distributed.<br />
2. The management and display of chart data<br />
within an ECDIS<br />
Aim<br />
Enhance knowledge of navigation safety<br />
and efficiency through an understanding<br />
of the ECDIS functionality and chart display<br />
capabilities.<br />
Duration<br />
1 day course designed to be delivered at the<br />
organisations venue or at the UKHO.<br />

Designed for<br />
Delegates who require knowledge of ECDIS<br />
and related charting issues; necessary for the<br />
management, navigation and decision making<br />
associated with electronic charting.<br />
This course is suitable as a complement to<br />
the STCWS IMO 1.27 Model course -<br />
Operational Use of Electronic Chart Display<br />
and Information Systems (ECDIS).<br />
Pre requisites<br />
The course will be conducted in English and<br />
therefore a good standard of both spoken<br />
and written English is required.<br />
Delegates should have a basic understanding<br />
of paper chart content.<br />
Objectives<br />
By the end of this course delegates will be able to:<br />
• Appreciate the value of ECDIS<br />
• Describe the generic principles of ECDIS and other chart systems<br />
• Understand the capabilities and limitations of ECDIS<br />
• Understand the regulatory requirements of ECDIS<br />
• Understand the SENC display standard<br />
• Understand the structure of ENC data<br />
• Recognise basic ENC and ECDIS symbols<br />
• Identify potential errors that can arise from the ECDIS display<br />
• Identify the risk of over reliance on ECDIS<br />
