<str<strong>on</strong>g>Training</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> Trainers (TOT) <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> Farmer Field Schools (FFS) are two core activities <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

the IPM training <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> extensi<strong>on</strong> process. The <str<strong>on</strong>g>for</str<strong>on</strong>g>mer is an effective way to help bring<br />

extensi<strong>on</strong> workers up to date <strong>on</strong> newly developed MeBr alternatives <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> <strong>on</strong> IPM in<br />

general. The knowledge gained will enable them to organize Farmer Field Schools <str<strong>on</strong>g>for</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

the farmers in their area.<br />

Farmer Field Schools are based <strong>on</strong> ecological principles, participatory training <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

n<strong>on</strong>-<str<strong>on</strong>g>for</str<strong>on</strong>g>mal educati<strong>on</strong>al methods. This model emphasizes learning through experience<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> dealing with real field problems. <str<strong>on</strong>g>Training</str<strong>on</strong>g> according to such principles implies<br />

facilitati<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> the learning process rather than instructi<strong>on</strong>. In additi<strong>on</strong>, FFSs give<br />

farmers the opportunity to experiment, sharpen their observati<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> research skills<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> take the initiative, adapting the alternatives to local c<strong>on</strong>diti<strong>on</strong>s. In fact, <strong>on</strong>e <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> the<br />

most important less<strong>on</strong>s learnt in the past by extensi<strong>on</strong> services has been that<br />

generalized recommendati<strong>on</strong>s to farmers from extensi<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> research need to be<br />

carefully examined, tested <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> adapted by farmers themselves, according to the<br />

specific local c<strong>on</strong>diti<strong>on</strong>s in their area. FFSs enable this process by enhancing the<br />

existing knowledge <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> skills that the farmers have gained through years <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

experience.<br />

FAO's experience <strong>on</strong> pest management in various countries in Southeast Asia, Africa<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> Latin America has dem<strong>on</strong>strated that the training process is vital <str<strong>on</strong>g>for</str<strong>on</strong>g> the adopti<strong>on</strong><br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> new pest c<strong>on</strong>trol methods by farmers. This training should not be merely a field<br />

dem<strong>on</strong>strati<strong>on</strong>, or the organizati<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> isolated field days. Usually farmers are eager to<br />

adopt alternative c<strong>on</strong>trol technologies that they themselves have tested <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> improved.<br />

This manual sets out the steps required <str<strong>on</strong>g>for</str<strong>on</strong>g> c<strong>on</strong>ducting comprehensive training <strong>on</strong> new<br />

alternatives to replace MeBr. It is the first editi<strong>on</strong>, <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> we feel sure that the elements<br />

given here will be enriched <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> improved up<strong>on</strong> by future field experience in methyl<br />

bromide phase-out in different countries.<br />
