Crop rotati<strong>on</strong><br />
For the purpose <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> c<strong>on</strong>trolling soil-borne pests, crop rotati<strong>on</strong> c<strong>on</strong>sists in the planting <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />
successive crops that are n<strong>on</strong>-host, less suitable hosts, or trap crops <str<strong>on</strong>g>for</str<strong>on</strong>g> the target<br />
soilborne pests. Many rotati<strong>on</strong>s include fallow, which c<strong>on</strong>sists <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> taking the l<str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> out <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />
producti<strong>on</strong> temporarily to reduce soil pathogen <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> other pest populati<strong>on</strong>s by<br />
removing the hosts, or substrates, <str<strong>on</strong>g>for</str<strong>on</strong>g> their development <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> exposing them to adverse<br />
envir<strong>on</strong>mental c<strong>on</strong>diti<strong>on</strong>s. Crop rotati<strong>on</strong> has been practised since ancient times <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> is<br />
still applied as part <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> a sustainable agricultural system <str<strong>on</strong>g>for</str<strong>on</strong>g> the c<strong>on</strong>trol <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> many soilborne<br />
pests <strong>on</strong> crops all over the world. The absence <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> a suitable host leads to a<br />
reducti<strong>on</strong> in pest numbers <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> reduces the pathogen inoculum, but rarely eliminates<br />
pest, or disease problems.<br />
Soil amendments<br />
Adding materials to the soil reduces, or suppresses, some soil-borne pathogens by<br />
stimulating antag<strong>on</strong>istic micro-organisms, increasing resistance <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> host plants,<br />
providing extra nutrients, altering the pH, or by various other envir<strong>on</strong>mental effects.<br />
Organic <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> inorganic amendments, such as compost <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> different types (by-products<br />
from agriculture, <str<strong>on</strong>g>for</str<strong>on</strong>g>estry <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> food industries, etc.), manure, inorganic amendments<br />
<str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> crop residues, can all have the effect <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> c<strong>on</strong>trolling soil-borne pathogens in crops<br />
<str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> may be easily applied in the vegetable <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> ornamental sectors.<br />
Previous research has proved the high efficacy <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> solar heating (solarizati<strong>on</strong>)<br />
combined with some effective amendments such as cruciferous residues, manure, etc.<br />
When added to the soil, these amendments are exposed to microbial degradati<strong>on</strong>,<br />
resulting in the producti<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> biotoxic volatile compounds <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> alcohols, aldehydes <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />
other volatile compounds that can stimulate germinati<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> fungal propagules <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />
increase microbial antag<strong>on</strong>istic activity in the soil. Microbial activity against<br />
pathogens in the soil can weaken propagules during solarizati<strong>on</strong>, or suppress their reestablishment<br />
in the soil after treatment. This has been proven effective <str<strong>on</strong>g>for</str<strong>on</strong>g> several<br />
soil-borne fungi (Verticillium spp., Rhizoct<strong>on</strong>ia solani, Pythium spp., etc.), nematodes<br />
<str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> many weeds. The c<strong>on</strong>trol <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> Pythium ultimum <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> Sclerotium rolfsii in soil<br />
exposed to vapour has also been successfully dem<strong>on</strong>strated in Italy.<br />
Bi<str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g>umigati<strong>on</strong><br />
Bi<str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g>umigati<strong>on</strong> is defined as the acti<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> volatile substances produced in the<br />
biodegradati<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> organic matter <str<strong>on</strong>g>for</str<strong>on</strong>g> the c<strong>on</strong>trol <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> soilborne pests. This technique<br />
increases its efficacy in due course when it <str<strong>on</strong>g>for</str<strong>on</strong>g>ms part <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> an integrated crop<br />
management system. It has been found that, generally, almost any organic matter can<br />
act as a bi<str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g>umigant, its effectiveness depending principally <strong>on</strong> the dose <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> the<br />
method <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> applicati<strong>on</strong>.<br />
