XHIBITOR HAS HIS SAY
ABOUT PICTURESi
'S.
ALLIED ARTISTS
Thin Red Line, The (AA)—Keir Dullea,
Jack Warden, Ray Daley. Another great
one from this good company. Give me more.
Played Thms. through Mon. Weather:
Fair.—Ernest Pollock, Highland Drive-In,
Hohenwald, Tenn. Pop. 2,300.
AMERICAN INTERNATIONAL
Muscle Beach Party (AIP)—Prankie Avalon,
Annette Funicello, Buddy Hackett.
One of my biggest Thursday-Friday-Satur-
This picture won't do
day dates of the year.
anything but business, and AIP's good for
small towns. Played Thurs., Fri., Sat.
Weather; Hot and dry.—Terry Axley, New
Theatre, England, Ark. Pop. 2,136.
COLUMBIA
Good Neighbor Sam (Col)—Jack Lemmon,
Romy Schneider, Dorothy Provine.
Good. My folks liked this. Played Sun.,
Mon.—S. T. Jackson, Jackson Theatre,
Flomaton, Ala. Pop. 1,480.
Long Ships, The (Col)—Richard Widmark,
Sidney Poitier, Rosanna Schiaffino.
"Long Ships," short boxoffice. Nothing doing.
Played Smi., Mon., Tues. Weather:
Clear and mild.—Lew Bray jr., Texas Theatre,
PhaiT, Tex. Pop.
Quick Gun, The
14,000.
(Col)—Audie Murphy,
Men-y Anders, James Best. This nice western,
doubled with the same company's
"Strait-Jacket," gave me my best Friday-
Saturday gross this year. This is a rousing
show, full of action, with some comedy relief
and a smattering of love interest. It's
in color, too. Audie seems to be the favorite
western star hereabouts. Played Fri., Sat.
Weather: Fine autumn. — I. Roche, Starlite
Drive-In, Chipley, Fla. Pop. 3,250.
METRO-GOLDWYN-MAYER
Come Fly With Me (MGM)—Dolores
Hart, Hugh O 'Brian, Karl Boehm. Good
little picture that should be doubled with
maybe a good repeat, with big names, and
you'll have a crowd-pleaser. Those who
came enjoyed it, as it was light and entertaining.
We played it Sunday-Monday.
Would have been better for us Thursday
and Friday. Weather: Overcast and cool.
—Skip and Marie Fletcher, Liberty Theatre,
Seward, Alaska.
Mail Order Bride (MGM)—Buddy Ebsen,
Keir Dullea, Lois Nettleton. A good "corn"
sell trailer. A poor print, sprocket holes on
the screen make for TV type presentation.
A good corn picture, but not a big one. It
did not make for a big comedy. Sunday
business excellent, Monday average. We're
in a wonderful business. Played Sun., Mon.
'Muscle Beach' Will Fill
House, Showman Says
What a show! That's "Muscle Beach
Party." You will fill the house. I even
liked it. Sure has plenty of nice girls
to look at. Buy it at top prices and you
will make money.
Valley Theatre,
Browns Valley, Minn.
LEO BACKER
Now Anxious to Show
Panther Cartoons
"The Pink Panther" is a real crowdpleaser.
The title and credits, featuring
the Pink Panther, helped get the
people in the mood to enjoy this picture.
Am now really anxious to run the
Pink Panther cartoons, which will soon
be in release.
BOB SMITH
Grand Theatre,
Canton, Okla.
Weather: Cool.—Ken Christiansen, Roxy
Theatre, Washburn, N.D. Pop. 968.
V.I.P's, The (MGM)—Elizabeth Taylor,
Richard Burton, Louis Joiu'dan. Not for
small situations.—John M. Bailey, Opera
House, Miltonvale, Kas. Pop. 911.
PARAMOUNT
Son of Captain Blood, The (Para)—Sean
Flynn, Alessandra Panaro, Jose Nieto. Attendance
was: little kids—much; all other
age groups—not so much. Young Flynn is
better looking than his father, but not the
swashbuckler. Played Sun. through Wed.
Weather: Hot and clear.—Lew Bray jr.,
Texas Theatre, Pharr, Tex. Pop. 14,000.
Who's Minding the Store? (Para) —Jerry
Lewis, Agnes Moorehead, Jill St. John.
Okay, if your patrons like Jerry Lewis.
Can be used on any weekend date. Good
business here. Played Sun., Mon. Weather:
Warm and dry.—Terry Axley, New Theatre,
England, Ark. Pop. 2,136.
20th CENTURY-FOX
Longest Day, The (20th-Fox) — John
Wayne, Richard Bmton, Richai-d Beymer,
Red Buttons. Although this (one of the
greatest war stories of all time) did not
do the business it should have, evei-yone,
including the women that saw it, was vei-y
much impressed. The entire production,
cast and writers were great. Play it four or
five days.—Bob Smith, Grand Theatre,
Canton, Okla.
UNITED ARTISTS
Hard Day's Night, A (UA)—The Beatles
Lennon, Paul McCartney, George
Harrison, Ringo Starr). A little silly in
spots, or so my patrons said. Had a few
drive-outs and no business considering
what we expected. Pi'obably due to the
fact that we were last with it in this area.
Companion featme was "The World of
Hem-y Orient," Seller's worst, in my estimation,
to date. Played Thurs., Fri., Sat.
Weather: Fine.— I. Roche, Starlite Drive-
In, Chipley, Fla. Pop. 3,250.
Kings of the Sun (UA)—Yul Bryrmer,
George Chakiris, Shirley Arme Field. Fair
picture with wonderful spectacular scenes,
but only average business. Weekend probably
hurt it some. Played Sun., Mon.
Weather: Hot.—Terry Axley, New Theatre,
England, Ark. Pop. 2,136.
One Man's Way (UA)—Don Murray,
Diana Hyland, William Windom. Smallest
Sunday-Monday in history! Nice summer
evenings wasted on this one. Have done
ten times as much on nights when it was
40 below zero. A real nothing! Don't let
them talk you into this one. Played Sun.,
Mon. Weather: Good.—Bill Cui-ran, Ramona
Theatre, Kiemmling, Colo. Pop. 900.
633 Squadron (UA)—Cliff Robertson,
George Chakiris, Maria Perschy. Another
"dam buster." Just had different faces
and didn't go into as much detail. Played
Thurs., Fri., Sat. Weather: Hot and clear.
—Lew Bray jr., Texas Theatre, Pharr, Tex.
Pop. 14,000.
UNIVERSAL
Birds, The (Univ)—Rod Taylor, Jessica
Tandy, Suzanne Pleshette. Hitchcock's
"The Birds" stirred their cui'iosity and we
came out okay. Terms were right. Customers
were satisfied and we are looking
forward to his next pictm-e. Played Sun.,
Mon. Weather: Snow.—Skip and Marie
Fletcher, Liberty Theatre, Seward, Alaska.
Pop. 1,000.
Bedtime Story (Univ) — David Niven,
Marlon Brando, Shirley Jones. It's cute,
it's funny, it's a good pictm-e that failed
here. Universal has the pictm-es, but the
titles are wrong or something. Guess they
were afraid it was a sexy "Bedtime Story."
Played Sun., Mon. Weather: Fair.—^Ken
Cliristianson, Roxy Theatre, Washburn,
N.D.
Lively Set, The (Univ)—James Darren,
Pamela Tiffin, Doug McClm-e. More such
color pictures will bring the crowds, when
hometown night football by a conference
leader is not interfering. The picture is
not only "young" and "action-full," but
clean at the same time it's modern. That
is something. Played Wed., Thm-s., Fri.
Weather: Excellent.—Art Richard, Marion
Theatre, Marion, S.C.
WARNER BROS.
Distant Trumpet, A (WB)—Troy Donahue,
Suzanne Pleshette, Diane McBain. A
wonderful horse and cavalry picture. We
always do good business with this type picture.
Could use more of them.—John M.
Bailey, Opera House, Miltonvale, Kas. Pop.
911.
4 for Texas (WB)—Fi'ank Sinatra, Dean
Martin, Anita Ekberg, Ursula Andi'ess. Not
a bad picture, but somewhat corny and
some situations are absolutely tasteless.
Not a very edifying motion picture and not
as furmy as trailer supposed it to be. Just
average entertainment. Played Thurs., Fri.,
Sat. Weather: Warm.—Paul Fournier,
Acadia Theatre, St. Leonard, N3. Pop.
2,150.
Rio Bravo (WB)—John Wayne, Dean
Martin, Ricky Nelson, Walter Brennan.
Excellent! Outgrossed anything we had for
the month of August. Walter Brennan's
role about stole the show as far as my
patrons were concerned. They came out
happy and so were we. Played Thurs., Fri.
Weather: Good.— Skip and Marie Fletcher,
Liberty Theatre, Seward, Alaska. Pop. 1,300.
Only Good Comments
For 'Neighbor Sam'
An entertaining comedy, "Good
Neighbor Sam" had "what it takes"
Jack Lemmon. Dorothy Provine also did
a good job. We heard only good comments
from patrons on the way out.
