This fern has always been rare in <strong>Huntingdonshire</strong> and only a few plants are known at each<br />

site, growing on <strong>the</strong> banks <strong>of</strong> small woodland streams. The only o<strong>the</strong>r site where it has been<br />

recorded is Holme Fen and it was last seen <strong>the</strong>re in 1846.<br />

This is a species <strong>of</strong> shallow calcareous water, usually less than 1m deep. In Britain, it is<br />

predominantly a species <strong>of</strong> eastern England and has a broadly similar distribution to that <strong>of</strong><br />

some o<strong>the</strong>r species <strong>of</strong> calcareous wetlands, including species covered by <strong>the</strong> Register e.g.<br />

Stellaria palustris and Lathyrus palustris (Preston, 1995).<br />

There have been no records for this species since 1974 when it was reported from Borough<br />

Fen. However, a strong population is known from <strong>the</strong> VC29 side <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> River Nene at The<br />
