This species was formerly widespread in southern and eastern England but has undergone a marked decline as a result of increases in nitrogen applications to competitive modern crops. It is also late fruiting and may have been disadvantaged by recent trends for the earlier harvesting of crops (as a result of the breeding of new crop cultivars) and the consequent earlier tilling of farmland. It may also be susceptible to herbicides (Wilson & King, 2003). 68
