Shelter Century
Fall Foliage Ride –
October 19th
The Talbot Interfaith Shelter announces
the second annual Shelter Century Fall Foliage
Ride to be held on October 19, 2013 at
8:00 am. The event will feature three separate
rides, an 11 mile family fun ride, a 31
mile fitness ride and a metric century (62.5
mile) ride. Proceeds will benefit the Talbot
Interfaith Shelter (TIS), a cold weather
homeless shelter in Talbot County, MD.
The fall foliage ride takes cyclists
through five picturesque waterside villages
in Talbot County, sharing the view with
skipjacks, local watermen and sailboat races
on the Miles River and the Chesapeake Bay.
Starting and ending at the St. Michaels Elementary
School, the town of St. Michaels
offers cyclists and their families shopping,
dining and historic lodging. The event is a
ride, not a race, and is fun for the entire family.
Rest stops will be available for all
courses with light food, refreshments and
restrooms provided.
All cyclists are treated with homemade
pies of every kind at the end of the event,
and cyclists on the 31 mile and 62.5 mile
rides are invited to join TIS at St. Michaels
Crab and Steak House for free beer and crab
balls on the town’s waterfront afterwards.
The Talbot Interfaith Shelter is dedicated
both to providing safe, temporary shelter
to men, women, and children who lack
adequate housing, and to raising awareness
of the issues of homelessness in Talbot
County. Fifteen faith communities rotate the
homeless shelter through their church facilities
during the cold weather months. Over
500 volunteers from the faith communities
have worked together since 2008 to keep
neighbors off the streets and in warm beds
during the winter. Sponsors and cyclists participating
in the event will directly help provide
shelter to the homeless during the cold
weather months.
To register for the event, visit the Shelter
Century website
(www.sheltercentury.org). For information
about the Talbot Interfaith Shelter, see their
Did you know...?
While working at Paw Paw Cove on Tilghman Island, The Smithsonian Institute and
archaeologist Darrin Lowery uncovered the oldest Clovis Point (associated with the
North American Clovis culture) in the world. It is believed that people lived on
Tilghman Island more than 13,000 years ago.
