G6990 Special Studies in Architecture. 1 to 6 hours. Prerequisite:<br />
graduate standing. May be repeated; maximum credit 12 hours. The<br />
candidate will thoroughly explore the particular phase <strong>of</strong> architecture<br />
selected for advanced study by the student and the graduate committee;<br />
presentation <strong>of</strong> the work will be determined by the nature <strong>of</strong> the<br />

1013 Foundation Studio: Two-Dimensional. Corequisite: <strong>ART</strong>C 1003,<br />
1023. Focuses on the formal elements and principles <strong>of</strong> two-dimensional<br />
spatial organization. Exploration in the basic language <strong>of</strong> art and design.<br />
Emphasis is placed on developing an understanding <strong>of</strong> the visual arts, the<br />
ingredients <strong>of</strong> which include inquiry, analysis, comparison, evaluation and<br />
language. Introduction to tools, methods and materials. (F)<br />
1023 Foundation Drawing. Corequisite: 1013 and <strong>ART</strong>C 1003.<br />
Introduction <strong>of</strong> basic techniques and skills needed to draw and interpret a<br />
three-dimensional world two-dimensionally. Exercises in observation, line,<br />
value, proportion, and perspective will be explored through a variety <strong>of</strong><br />

1113 Foundation Studio: Three-Dimensional. Prerequisite: 1013, 1023,<br />
and <strong>ART</strong>C 1003; Corequisite: <strong>ART</strong>C 1103. Focuses on the formal element,<br />
principles and concepts <strong>of</strong> three-dimensional form. Emphasis is placed on<br />
developing an understanding <strong>of</strong> the visual arts, the ingredients <strong>of</strong> which<br />
include inquiry, analysis, comparison, evaluation and language.<br />
Introduction to tools, methods and materials which include development<br />
<strong>of</strong> basic technical ability. (Sp)<br />
2253 Beginning Ceramics. Prerequisite: 15 hours <strong>of</strong> foundation courses or<br />
permission <strong>of</strong> instructor on a space available basis. Introduction to various<br />
hand-building, glazing and firing techniques. Emphasis placed on<br />
developing an understanding <strong>of</strong> working in three dimensions (with clay as<br />
the medium), and on interpreting shape by combining surface color and<br />
three-dimensional form. Conceptual and critical issues introduced. (F, Sp)<br />
2263 Introduction to Ceramic Processes. Prerequisite: 15 hours <strong>of</strong><br />
foundation courses or permission <strong>of</strong> instructor on a space available basis.<br />
Introduction to various hand-building, glazing and firing techniques. Functional<br />

2313 Beginning Drawing. Prerequisite: 1013, 1023, and <strong>ART</strong>C 1003; or<br />
permission <strong>of</strong> instructor. Uses representational drawing to increase<br />
observational abilities. Perspective, value, form, texture, proportion and<br />
scale are studied using still life, the figure and outside drawing assignments.<br />

2323 Introduction to Drawing. Prerequisite: 2313 or permission <strong>of</strong><br />
instructor. Introduction to drawing utilizing processes and concepts <strong>of</strong> line,<br />
color, composition and media. Students will explore abstraction using still<br />

2413 Beginning Painting. Prerequisite: 15 hours <strong>of</strong> foundation courses, or<br />
permission <strong>of</strong> instructor. The aqueous media used in various approaches to<br />
painting problems (processes and concepts); lectures, group criticism and<br />
individual instruction assist the student in studying the fundamentals <strong>of</strong><br />

2423 Introduction to Painting Processes. Prerequisite: 2413 or<br />
permission <strong>of</strong> instructor. Continued instruction <strong>of</strong> the aqueous media as<br />

2513 Beginning Sculpture: Contemporary. Prerequisite: 15 hours <strong>of</strong><br />
foundation courses. Introduction <strong>of</strong> basic sculpture processes and<br />
concepts. Emphasis on formal visual properties and production techniques<br />
as they pertain to additive, subtractive and constructive modes <strong>of</strong><br />
contemporary sculpture. A wide range <strong>of</strong> materials, tools and methods will<br />

2523 Beginning Sculpture: Figurative. Prerequisite: 15 hours <strong>of</strong><br />
foundation courses. Creating in oil base clay the human skull and a life-size<br />
portrait; creating a waste mold and making a plaster cast from it. (Irreg.)<br />
2633 Visual Communications I. Prerequisite: 15 hours <strong>of</strong> foundation<br />
courses; corequisite: 2643. Introductory course in visual communication<br />
which focuses on nonverbal communication. Students are introduced to<br />
design research, theory and methods. This course explores the importance<br />
design plays in shaping meaning and interpretation through basic visual<br />

2643 Design Technology. Prerequisite: 15 hours <strong>of</strong> foundation courses;<br />
corequisite: 2633. Introduction to electronic tools, processes and<br />
techniques as they relate to visual communications. (F)<br />
2653 Visual Communications II. Prerequisite: 2633, 2643; corequisite:<br />
2663. Course is structured to help students apply various strategies, concepts,<br />
and form/content relationships to their work. Projects stress theory, application<br />
and an introduction to the computer as a design process tool. (Sp)<br />
2663 Typography I. Prerequisite: 2633, 2643; corequisite: 2653.<br />
Introduction to the basic concepts <strong>of</strong> typographic design through studio<br />

2673 Beginning Metal Design. Prerequisite: 15 hours <strong>of</strong> foundation<br />
courses. Introduction to material and construction <strong>of</strong> simple object in<br />

2683 Beginning Metal Design Processes. Prerequisite: 2673. Introduction<br />
to lost wax casting techniques and more advanced construction methods.<br />

2713 Beginning Etching. Prerequisite: 15 hours <strong>of</strong> foundation courses. An<br />
introduction to the basic techniques and concepts <strong>of</strong> intaglio printing will<br />
be explored. Each student will create a body <strong>of</strong> work utilizing a variety <strong>of</strong><br />

2723 Beginning Lithography. Prerequisite: 15 hours <strong>of</strong> foundation<br />
courses. Designed to introduce the student to a variety <strong>of</strong> lithographic hand<br />
and photo techniques in the production <strong>of</strong> multiple images. Each student<br />
will produce a body <strong>of</strong> work with strong emphasis on drawing skills, design<br />

2733 Beginning Serigraphy. Prerequisite: 15 hours <strong>of</strong> foundation courses.<br />
This course will involve the implementation <strong>of</strong> both hand and photo stencil<br />
methods. During the semester each student will produce a body <strong>of</strong> work<br />
exploring the image-making potential <strong>of</strong> screen printing techniques. Strong<br />
emphasis will be placed on exploring color, design and personal creativity.<br />

2803 Media Arts Fundamentals. Prerequisite: permission <strong>of</strong> department.<br />
Art majors only. Introduction to concepts and practices in media arts with<br />
exposure to a variety <strong>of</strong> media including film, video, photography, and new<br />

2813 Filmmaking I. Prerequisite: 2803 or <strong>ART</strong>C 2010, or permission <strong>of</strong><br />
instructor on a space-available basis. Beginning 16mm filmmaking covering<br />
basic technical and aesthetic properties <strong>of</strong> film. Students work in b/w<br />
16mm film and non-synchronous sound. The course is taught through a<br />
combination <strong>of</strong> lecture, hands-on lab, and film screening. (Irreg.)<br />
2843 Photography for Artist I. This is a non-darkroom introduction to<br />
photographic study. The main components <strong>of</strong> this course include camera<br />
and lens operations and techniques and exposure control; to develop an<br />
informed approach to discussing art through selective readings and viewing<br />
<strong>of</strong> slides and/or videos; and to establish a foundation to the critical process.<br />

2853 Introduction to Photography. Prerequisite: 15 hours <strong>of</strong> foundation<br />
coursework or permission <strong>of</strong> instructor. This course introduces the student<br />
to current photographic concepts, theory and practice, both traditional and<br />
digital. The course has a lecture section and a separate lab component. It is<br />
divided into components that introduce the camera and exposure controls,<br />
explores darkroom procedures including black and white film processing<br />
and printing and includes presentation and criticism, and covers digital<br />
photo practices including an introduction to Photoshop. Lab will combine<br />
working familiarization with critical assessment to enhance the visual impact<br />
at well as historical and contemporary context <strong>of</strong> photography. (Irreg.)<br />
2873 Video for the Artist I. Prerequisite: 2803 or <strong>ART</strong>C 2010, or<br />
permission <strong>of</strong> instructor on a space-available basis. Emphasis on developing<br />
video production and post-production skills. Training exercises in studio<br />
and field production, camera work, lighting and sound. Instruction and<br />
practice in analog and digital editing. Exploration <strong>of</strong> digital media. Students<br />
will produce a number <strong>of</strong> short projects. (Irreg.)<br />
3253 Intermediate Ceramic Design. Prerequisite: 2253. Continued<br />
exploration <strong>of</strong> various hand-building, glazing and firing techniques.<br />
Primarily low fire processes. Formal issues such as sculptural composition,<br />
form and surface development, and the interpretation <strong>of</strong> function<br />
addressed. Emphasis placed on developing a personal language <strong>of</strong><br />
