• Shade trees on south to cut air conditioning
costs and evergreens on north to save on
heating bills
• Improve Stormwater Controls
• Installing permeable pavement
• Disconnecting downspouts/roof leaders
• Create small swales and detention ponds
• Establishing ponds with onsite storage
• Installing oil/grit separators
• Substitute salt-based de-icers with non-salt
alternatives (calcium magnesium acetate,
sodium formate or natural substances such as
bird seed or sand)
• Constructing roof-top gardens
• Spills Abatement
• Development of spills control plans (e.g.,
retrofit stormwater ponds, outfall oil/water
separators, etc.)
• Development or redevelopment of spill
response systems

There are a number of regulatory, economic and
suasive arguments for achieving sustainable
development in the watershed, ranging from
reducing environmental impacts and reducing
costs, to improving public relations and the local
community. But the strongest argument is that a
healthy economy relies on a healthy environment
– the two are inseparable and both function best
when they are vibrant and diverse.
Building valuable partnerships with the ICI sector
offers the opportunity to build a sustainable
economy soundly implanted with a healthy
