By: Terry Callahan For Talbot County resident Wilson Wyatt, the publication of his newly-released book, Yosemite Catching the Light, is another milestone in a long career in communications, a career that began when, as a high-school senior, he was published in a literary anthology edited by an editor from Yale University. At the University of the South in Sewanee, Tennessee, he studied under Andrew Lytle, one of the “fugitive writers” of the time, a group that also included Robert Penn Warren and William Faulkner. After college, he became a reporter for the Louisville (KY) Courier- Journal.“ I was fortunate to become a reporter for The Courier-Journal,” says Wilson. “It was one of the top newspapers in the country at that time. Afterwards, he held senior vice-presidencies first at PNC Bank, Pittsburgh, later at the Travelers Insurance Companies in Hartford, Connecticut. But as time progressed, he looked forward to getting away to the Eastern Shore where he owned a house. “The Eastern Shore just became a wonderful place to unwind and relax. After a number of years, my wife (Katie) and I made our home on the Shore. In retiring, I wanted to do what I really enjoyed, which is writing.” Wilson joined the Eastern Shore Writers Association, eventually becoming its president with the purpose of helping to build a closer writing community across the Delmarva Peninsula. “It's a natural home for writers.” He engaged several other Shore writers and started The Delmarva Review, a literary review for short story writers, poets and essayists. This year, six of the Review’s selections were nominated for the prestigious Pushcart Prize, a national literary award. Along with print communications, Wilson’s other interest is photography. Pictures he took as a reporter included those depicting the mini-submarine recovery of the H-bomb in Spain, and the wildlife recovery from flooding in Florida's Everglades. “I camped there a week with the environmentalists and park rangers. We would catch suffering deer with airboats, and airlift them to higher ground. It was a great experience.” Wilson’s son became interested in photography at age 10 and now is a professional photographer in Scottsdale, Arizona. “I taught him the darkroom and he taught me digital [photography],” says Wilson with a laugh. This mutual interest led to Wilson’s book on Yosemite National Park. He went originally to study light and learn how to use it under changing weather conditions. (continued from page 14) photographers, each day they went on two treks. “We’d try to come back for lunch unless we were too far out – then we’d eat power bars. We averaged eight miles a day hiking, sometimes very steep inclines, generally going places other people weren’t.” He adds, “The beauty of everything was spectacular. After each day I would take off my hiking shoes, turn on my computer and load my photographs, and post one on Facebook every day. I would get about 100 responses to each image. I mentioned I was going to make a copy of the book for my son and people started ordering copies of the book." Wilson took nine hundred photos which he then narrowed to seventy-five to include in the book. He explains, “I like to try to see things that maybe we overlook in our everyday lives. If it’s a flower, I may want to look at it with a macro [close-up] lens and see that within the flower the stamens can look as beautiful as the flower. I like to play with light. Lighting conditions can make a subject look very different at dawn or at dusk.” As an example, Wilson pointed out that in pre-dawn light, especially on the shoreline, Easton Market Square heavenly treats 137 N. His viewer’s response is important. “If someone can look at one of my photographs and feel something from it, then I’m excited. If it stirs an emotion or memory, then that’s the biggest reward a good photographer could have.” Wilson Wyatt’s next book will be published this spring, The Eastern Shore Catching the Light.
