Academy for Lifelong Learning at CBMM Winter Semester to Begin January 9th The winter semester of the Academy for Lifelong Learning at the Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum (ALL) is rich in variety and scope. From January 9 through mid-April ALL will offer 18 courses, tours and lectures spanning subjects as diverse as literature, ecology, health, religion, art, technology, economics and political science. The winter months may keep us inside more than we like, but there will be plenty of opportunity to explore ecology and the environment starting with “Sustainability: The Intersection of Ecology, Economy & Culture” lead by Greg Farley, co-chair of WORD PUZZLE NEW YEAR’S Circle words forward, backward, up, down, and diagonally. TIMES SQUARE 33. TOAST 34. WELCOME 35. WISHES 50 Chesapeake College’s Sustainability Operations Group. This course will be held Monday’s from January 30-March 7. This is one of three offerings in a later afternoon/evening time slot. Also in this new time slot “Midshore Riverkeepers Film: Let our Rivers Flow” with Tim Junkin, Executive Director of Midshore Riverkeeper Conservancy, will meet on Thursday March 22. The third course on the environmental theme is “Calories, Kilowatts, and Beyond: The Evolution of Energy on the Chesapeake Bay”, offered by Phillip Hesser, PhD. It will examine the history of energy on the Bay and its watershed with special reference to the human and natural environments on the Eastern Shore. This course will meet Tuesday mornings from January 17 – February 7. For the literary there are three courses which should interest. Joan Katz will lead a memoir writing group on Monday afternoons once a month starting January 9. The ever popular John Miller and John Ford will offer a class on poetry entitled “Poets Laureate, Second Stanza” on Wednesday afternoons from January18-February 8. Margot Miller’s “Choosing Between Two Worlds” will look at 4 novels in translation and meet Thursday afternoons from March 29-April 19. Two local authors are scheduled for ALL’s Meet the Author Series: Ron Liebman, Author of Jersey Law, on January 9 and Susan McKelvey author of Far on Distant: Beautiful Quilt Block Patterns fromThe Chatham Quilt on March 12. Suzi Peel, an expert in global health will offer a course entitled “Global Health: TB, Malaria, AIDS-More Than You Ever Thought You Needed To Know, and Why It Matters” on Wednesday mornings from January 11-25. Dr. Scott Friedman, a cardiologist with the Chesapeake Bay Cardiology Clinic, will give a lecture “When Is Coronary Stenting Appropriate?” on Wednesday March 28 in the evening. Techies and techy want-a-bees will enjoy “Facebook for Seniors” to be offered by the CBMM Vice President of Communications , Tracey Munson, on Monday at midday on January 9. “Apple iPAd and Motorola Xoom Tablet Computers” a (continued on page 51)
(continued from page 50) course introduced last fall will be repeated due to high demand on Tuesday afternoons January 17-February 14. In late February and early March save Thursday afternoons and pack a snack of manna and red devil cake. Rabbi Donald Berlin will be leading a course entitled “The Mosaic of Moses As Leader” early Thursday afternoons from February 9- March 15 followed by Samuel Barnett’s course asking “Have You Met Satan Yet?” from February 16-March 8. On the political and economic front Bob Feldhuhn will help us navigate the 2008 financial meltdown and future fiscal challenges with “Fiscal Crises”, Mondays at midday from January 23-February 27. “Great Decisions Discussion Program” will be offered as always, led this winter by Phil Betsch. This group will meet Monday mornings from January 30-March 19. For tours, on February 29, Donna Harrison, President of The Chesapeake Center, will give a tour of this important center which offers vocational training and life services to disabled residents throughout Talbot, Caroline and Dorchester Counties. And brought back by popular demand there will be three opportunities to visit the Easton Airport: January 12, February 9 and March 8.
