GENERAL INFORMATION FOR UNM ONLINE COURSES UNM Distance Education Programs were developed to create access to UNM courses for those students who cannot come to UNM main campus or need a flexible schedule. Online programs provide expanded learning opportunities to help students obtain their degree. Learners access primary content and instruction using a variety of tools from WebCT/Vista. Some courses have scheduled activities such as chats, face-to-face meetings, and/or proctored exams. Check the online course listings for this information at http://online.unm.edu. Online courses follow the regular UNM semester schedule. Most follow 16- and 8-week formats with learning activities scheduled on a weekly basis. UNM online courses are not selfpaced. All UNM admission and registration deadlines, policies, and procedures apply to students who participate in online courses. Online courses appear on your transcript in the same way as campus-based courses. Admission and Registration Information You will need to be admitted to UNM to register for online classes. There are several admission options depending on whether you are in a degree program or interested in nondegree status. International and non-resident online students can pay resident tuition fees if they enroll in no more than six credit hours per semester. Wondering about your computer? Fact: Online courses follow the academic calendar and have due dates set by the instructor, just like campus courses. Myth: You don’t interact with your instructor or classmates. Fact: You will be in frequent contact with your instructor and classmates through online discussions, course mail, and group work. Myth: Online courses do not count for the same credit as face-to-face courses. Fact: Online courses count as the same credit as their face-to-face counterparts. Myth: You can’t take online courses and “real” on-campus courses at the same time. Fact: You can take both traditional classes and online classes in the same semester. Online courses are “real” UNM classes. Myth: You can’t take online classes unless you can come to Albuquerque. Fact: We often have out-of-state students, even international students, take online classes at UNM without visiting our beautiful campus.
