How to support your child
through Secondary School
Many parents become less involved with schooling as their child
grows up and enters secondary education - but it is still just as
important to support your child during this time especially
during the difficult teenage years.
There are many ways to do this:
Make sure they get to school on time - remember they should be in school at
8.55 at the latest!
One of the ways this can be achieved is by making sure they go to bed at a
reasonable time and if they have a TV/ games console/ computer in their
room try to limit use late in the evening as this prevents them from ‘winding
down’ at night time.
Make sure they get up in time to have a good breakfast before leaving for
school - it’s the most important meal of the day. If their brains are not fed and
hydrated they won’t be able to concentrate in lessons.
Try to find them a suitable place to do their homework. This doesn’t have to
be silent - sometimes it helps students to concentrate if they are listening to
their favourite music! Ask them to wear headphones if it’s not yours!
Talk to your child about their school work - even if they don’t seem to
communicate they will appreciate your interest - and go to Parents evenings
and meetings at the school.
Make sure they take the appropriate items for their work, for example,
stationery, PE/ swimming kit or ingredients for Food Technology.
If there seems to be a problem, please contact the school as soon as
possible and please make sure the school has your up-to-date contact
details, including work and mobile numbers in case of any emergency.
