C O N TA C T B O O K 2 0 1 0 - 2 0 1 1 The House System A few words about the people our Houses are named after: CA CO Anna Neagle was a star of stage and screen in her day who grew up in the area. Anna Neagle proved to be a box-office sensation in British films for over 25 years. She was noted for providing glamour and sophistication to war torn London audiences with her lightweight musicals, comedies and historical dramas. She won several awards as Britain's favourite actress and biggest female box-office draw. Almost all of her films were produced and directed by Herbert Wilcox, whom she married in 1943. Mary Seacole was a nurse who worked among wounded British soldiers during the Crimean War. Although most people have heard of Florence Nightingale, who became famous at the same time, few have heard of the heroic work done by Mary whose work has been largely unappreciated and forgotten. This may be due, in part, to the fact that she was a woman of mixed race (half Scottish and half Jamaican). HU Jack Cornwell was a Manor Park resident when WWI broke out in 1914 and joined the Navy in 1915. During the Battle of Jutland in 1916, he showed extreme courage at a gun placement under heavy fire despite being seriously wounded. He survived until reaching shore in Grimsby, where he died from his wounds. He was awarded the VC at the age of 15. MA John Curwen was the founder of the Tonic So-fa system of musical teaching. He developed musical notes into the do, re, mi, fa, so, la, ti that are still famous today. ST Michael Faraday was an extraordinary scientist. He made many important discoveries in Physics and Chemistry, eventually inventing the electric motor. 10
C O N TA C T B O O K 2 0 1 0 - 2 0 1 1 Learning Mentors & Inclusion At some point or another some students may experience difficulties. At these times it may be necessary to assign a Learning Mentor. During such times it has been proven that having someone to help students work through challenges can empower students and allow them to focus on their learning. Learning mentors use a variety of approaches which can be tailored to individual needs. Some of the methods used are: * 1 : 1 mentoring * Group Work * Advocacy * Conflict resolution * Mediation * * Motivation * Homework support * * Organisational skills * Target setting * * Bereavement * Workshops * counselling * Transition * Literacy support * Improve self image Coursework catch-up Action planning Parent liaison In-class support The Learning Mentors are attached to each House.
