A Prayer for the
Armed Forces
Almighty God, stretch forth Your
mighty arm to strengthen and protect

LISTENING TO GOD
Familiarity, in the case of the Lord’s Prayer,
probably hasn’t bred contempt in most of us, but it
certainly can breed a kind of inertia. The words we
speak in prayer run the same risks as all our other
human words: they can be spoken hastily,
thoughtlessly, carelessly. In a manner parallel to the
words we say in the Lord’s Prayer—“forgive us as
we forgive others”—today might be the day to invite
God to “listen to us as well as we listen to you.”
Today might be the day to listen to the Lord’s Prayer
with newly attentive ears.
RENOVATION AND BUILDING &
MAINTENANCE FUND COLLECTION
Sincere thank you for your generous support to our
Renovation and Building and Maintenance Funds.
Your continuous support is deeply appreciated.
Next Sunday, August 1 there will be another opportunity
to support both funds. Our second collection
will be taken up for this purpose. As reminder
donations that we collect for the Building and
Maintenance Fund are for general maintenance.
Donations for the Renovation Fund on the other
hand, will cover the costs of any repairs to the
buildings and our parish grounds.
May our Lord bestow many blessing and you and
your family for your generosity and sacrifice on
behalf of our parish. Once a month a Mass is offered
for the intention of all benefactors and supporters
of St. Ferdinand Parish.
Let us learn from the example of Luke’s Jesus, who
would not instruct others how to pray until he himself
had been a man of prayer. Moreover, listen carefully
to the follow-up Jesus gives for the prayer itself. In
our quick-fix society we must heed the call to
persistence; in a world that puts glib explanations on
difficult situations we must continue to seek and
knock; in our all-too-humanness, we must be open to
the patience, grace, and wisdom of the will of God.
Do we want the Lord to listen to our voice? Maybe
we can start by listening to God’s.

Back-to-School Sales Tax Holiday August 6-15, 2010
On July 7th a Back-to-School Sales Tax Holiday was signed into law. The tax holiday will begin August 6 and last
through August 15, 2010. During this window, state taxes on clothing and school supplies will be reduced by 5% to
1.25%.(instead of 6.25%). Other Local County and City taxes will still apply.
ELIGIBLE SCHOOL SUPPLIES
The legislation defines "School supplies" as items
used by a student in a course of study. Purchases of
“school supplies” for any other use are not eligible
for the reduced rate of tax.

Illinois Right to Life Committee has reserved two entire
circus performances. Choose between shows at 5:00pm

can be dangerous to anyone,
particularly older
adults, persons with disabilities
and people on
medication for chronic health problems.
Common sense tips for handling the heat...
• Drink lots of water and natural juices. Avoid alcoholic
beverages, coffee and colas.
• Avoid going out in the blazing heat , if possible.
• Keep shades drawn and blinds closed, but windows
slightly open.
• Keep electric lights off or tuned down.
• Take cool baths or showers-use cool towels.
• Stay in air conditioning at home or at a cooling
center. For cooling centers in Chicago, call the
City's non-emergency assistance number by dialing
311.
• Wear loose, light cotton clothing.
• Do not eat heavy meals. Avoid using cooking
ovens.
• Check on family members, friends and
neighbors. Remember, in medical emergency
911.
Heat exhaustion develops when a person fails to replace
fluids and salt that are lost through sweating.
An individual may experience extreme weakness,
fatigue, giddiness, nausea or a headache. Other
symptoms may include clammy or moist skin, a pale
or flushed complexion and a normal or slightly
higher body temperature. If heat exhaustion happens,
rest in a cool place and drink sports beverages. If
vomiting or unconsciousness occur, call a doctor immediately.
The signs of heat stroke include:
· Mental confusion, delirium, chills, dizziness, loss of
consciousness, convulsions or coma.
· A body temperature of 105 °F or higher.
· Hot, dry skin that may be red, mottled or bluish.
· A strong fast pulse.

Składamy serdeczne podziękowania za złożone
dotychczas ofiary podczas drugiej kolekty w każdą
pierwszą niedzielę miesiąca. W następny weekend, 1
sierpnia druga kolekta zostanie przeznaczona na
wsparcie funduszy Renovation oraz Building and
Maintenance.
Tak jak informowaliśmy kilka miesięcy temu ofiary,
które zbieramy w każdą niedzielę oraz ofiary, które są
składane na fundusz Bulding and Maintenance
wystarczają jedynie na płacenie bieżących rachunków i
bieżących prac konserwacyjnych. Natomiast z ofiar
zbieranych na Renovation Fund prowadzimy niezbędne
remonty naszych budynków oraz dbamy o posesję
parafialną, na tyle na ile pozwalają nam zebrane kwoty.
Niech Bóg swoim błogosławieństwem wynagrodzi

ON GUITAR CLASSES, MUSCLE MEMORY, AND PRAYER

So I’m taking guitar classes these days at Chicago’s Old
Town School of Folk Music. I can’t even read music. That’s cool,
though, because at the OTS, not being noteworthy isn’t
noteworthy. In truth, the place embraces people like me. I
started out with eight weeks of Guitar 1, and on the first day of
class, my teacher, Jim, held up the thing hanging from around
his neck and said, “This is a guitar.” Class got harder for me
after that, but not surprisingly, given that three accomplished
players I know have told me musicianship is better learned
young than old. The same three tell me, however, that if I
persist, I’ll progress.
The first song we learned in Guitar 1 was Jambalaya
by Hank Williams. “Goodbye Joe, me gotta go, me oh my oh/ Me
gotta go pole the pirogue down the bayou…” D chord. A7 chord.
A7 chord. D chord. And so it goes all the way through.
Jambalaya is considered an easy strumming song because of
this simple repetition pattern, but my fretting fingers took a
long time to go smoothly from one chord to the other, and I’m
not there yet. Jim told us, though, that after doing it about a
million times, we’ll get used to it. A substitute teacher later
explained that guitar playing is geography. He said if the G
chord is say, Cleveland, and the D chord is Chicago, all we have
to do is find our best way from city to city. OK. But there are
many multi‐city songs, and at full speed‐‐or even half speed‐‐
the road maps which define them are daunting. My transitions
are slow. Painfully slow. If the G chord really is Cleveland, I find

that I can get there from just about anywhere. If the D chord
really is Chicago, I find it difficult getting there from just about
anywhere.
Now I’m in Guitar 2, still trying to find Chicago but
dealing now, too, with finger picking and base alternate runs
and a Johnny Cash riff that sounds cool when he plays it but like
random notes when I play it because of my slowness. And yet
I’m buoyed by Jim’s idea that executing any of these chords/
transitions will get easier just by executing them more. All of
my teachers have said that this has to do with something called
“muscle memory.” With time, my fingers will know what to do.
Persistence‐‐like patience‐‐is a virtue.
All of which leads me to today’s readings. Can you
believe Abraham in Genesis coming back to God again, again,
again, and again asking for mercy for Sodom and Gomorrah on
behalf of the innocents there? Cheeky, almost, but Jesus himself
encourages such persistence in the Gospel: “…ask and you will
receive; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be
opened to you.” As one of my former pastors used to say,
praying is hard work. The more we pray, though, the more
prayer will become a part of us. Such persistence is akin, of
course, to the notion of muscle memory. I’m still working on
getting from Cleveland to Chicago in guitar class, but the more I
do it, the more familiar the terrain will become. In like fashion,
I’m still working on the Apostle Paul’s encouragement to pray
always, but the more I do it, the more I’ll find my way.

BAPTISM:
For Children: a pre-Baptism class is required for Baptism of the first
child. Classes are held in English on the first Wednesday of each
month at 7:00PM in the Convent, and in Polish on the last Tuesday of
each month at 7:30PM in the Church. Following registration, the
sacrament of Baptism is celebrated in English on the second Saturday
each month at 6:00PM and on the fourth Sunday of the month at the
12:30PM Mass. The sacrament of Baptism is celebrated in Polish on
the first Saturday of the month at 6:00PM and on the third Sunday of
the month at the 3:00PM Mass. Please call the rectory to register at

For Adults: Classes are taught through the Rite of Christian Initiation
Program (RCIA) on Sunday mornings at 10:00AM. Please call Stan
