BIO-SLIM® TRANSFORMER INSTALLED IN CELTIC SEA (GREAT-BRITAIN) FOR AN OFF SHORE WIND-FARM ensures safe and healthy work environment for its employees. To emphasise the importance on day-to-day practices in this area, health and safety has been chosen as one of the focus themes articulated in CG’s Code of Business Practices. The Company also has a Health & Safety policy, which has been implemented across all its locations. The “Health & Safety Committee” at all locations ensures review and adequate compliance of the Company’s Health & Safety Policy. Conducting of training programmes on safety and environment, product training sessions for newly joined technicians and trainees, firefighting drills, health check-ups for executives, HIV/AIDS awareness and voluntary blood donation camps are some of the initiatives undertaken as part of the Company’s on-going programmes. All the manufacturing units of the Company have received ISO 14001 Environmental Standards and Management Certification and OHSAS 18001 Certification for Occupational Health & Safety Management Systems. The Company propagates usage of environmentally safe technologies in its product design processes. The Company is also increasing its focus on developing transformers and power quality products for usage in projects based on wind, solar, renewable and other non-conventional sources of energy. During the year, the Company won the Greentech Gold Award 2007 in the Engineering Sector for Environmental Management Systems for green products and process technologies developed within the Company. Annexure to Directors’ Report Under Section 217(1)(e) of the Companies Act, 1956 CONSERVATION OF ENERGY A. ENERGY CONSERVATION MEASURES TAKEN Management of Energy efficiencies is an integral part of the Company’s objectives, whilst modernising technologies at its manufacturing units. In addition, efforts continue, to conserve energy to the maximum extent by constant monitoring of energy consumption data, adopting energy conservation measures, reducing cycle time of furnace related processes, using renewable energy sources and adopting other measures to improve energy yields. Some illustrative measures adopted towards energy conservation are : $ Solid phase sintering process for manufacturing of contacts for vacuum interrupters $ Installation of LPG fired furnaces, for powder coating $ Condition monitoring of autoclaves $ Installation of VFD autoclaves $ Installation of induction heating systems, for rotors used in motors $ Reduction in cycle time for stator machining processes $ Automation in air conditioning systems B. ADDITIONAL INVESTMENTSAND PROPOSALS, IF ANY, BEING IMPLEMENTED FOR REDUCTION IN CONSUMPTION OF ENERGY $ Development and usage of LED based lighting systems $ Installation of wind mills upto 3.2 kW, to produce more eco-friendly energy, which will cater to the lighting systems of factories $ Development of bio-fluids for transformer applications $ Development of brazing processes for manufacture of 2.4” vacuum interrupters $ Automation in low pressure air control, for manufacturing processes $ On-line aging testing for florescent tube light TL-3 $ Installation of energy saver lighting systems C. IMPACT OF THE MEASURES AT (A) AND (B) FOR REDUCTION OF ENERGY CONSUMPTION AND CONSEQUENT IMPACT ON THE COST OF PRODUCTION Through greater implementation of energy efficient manufacturing processes and power quality management, there will be a further reduction in energy consumption and resultant cost savings. However, since the Company’s manufacturing processes are not energy intensive, the energy conservation measures have a negligible impact on the Company’s overall cost of production of goods. TECHNOLOGY ABSORPTION RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT (R&D) 1. Specific areas of significance in which R&D is carried out by the Company During the year, the Company has concentrated on developing new platform and breakthrough technologies in support of the product technology centres at the Divisions, to strengthen exploitation and improvisation of the existing technology platforms. This direction for R&D has also been formally articulated in the “Quality Policy” of CG Global R&D Centre. 2.
