Dick Poey pursues public arts
venues, such as city street displays,
for his sculptures. His Like a Tree,
Rooted in the Earth was purchased by
Hopkins (Minn.) Historical Society
and has now found a permanent home
on the city’s plaza on Main Street. In
May, his bronze Salsa was accepted
for ArtStreet. While driving through
Hopkins around the Fourth of July,
patriotic gesture was reported in
several newspapers (see photos online).
In May, Dick installed three bronze
penguins in the Mankato, Minn.,
public art program. Called News!, the
piece has generated a lot of smiles. A
family who lost a daughter asked Dick
Jerry Turnauer and Sandye
celebrated their 50th wedding
anniversary with a cruise through
the Panama Canal. The cruise
inspired Jerry to read David
McCullough’s Path Between the Seas.
In April, the Turnauers went on a
mission with the charitable group
Friends of the IDF (Israeli Defense
Forces). They visited World War II
concentration camps in Poland. An
Auschwitz survivor accompanied
them and spoke. They then flew to
Jerusalem, visited army and air force
bases, and met with top military
officers and politicians, including
Prime Minister Bibi Netanyahu
and President Shimon Peres. After
they returned home, Jerry’s lawsuit
against Ford Motor Company, filed
in 1999 for breach of contract over
the discontinuation of Ford’s heavy
truck business, finally came to
trial. The jury awarded damages as
claimed. Jerry adds: “We fully expect
Ford will appeal, so it might be a
few years before we pop any corks.”
