which is in its 23rd year. The
organization drives or sponsors
numerous programs and activities
designed to improve Center City and
Central districts of Philadelphia.
Center City District Restaurant Week
is a recent event. Two Farmer’s
Markets are being promoted. A
newly designed and refurbished park
was opened, with a plaza planned at
the doorstep to City Hall. The
District partners with institutions,
organizations, museums, and
businesses in these endeavors.
David Goldstein of Northridge,
Calif., a Pi Lam and chemistry
graduate, was featured in the summer
2012 issue of Lafayette Magazine.
Dave is an associate professor and
chief of the Division of Geriatric,
Hospital, and General Internal
Medicine at University of Southern
California’s Keck School of Medicine.
He believes a respect for and an
appreciation of the humanities can
help physicians meet demanding
moral dilemmas. Dave divides his
time equally among administration,
teaching, and treating patients.
He revels in “igniting a flame in a
student.” Dave reflects on his work
with Dr. Joseph Sherma, Larkin
Professor Emeritus of Chemistry,
and marvels at how Dr. Sherma
opened his world to him. That
mentoring relationship, which had a
great effect on Dave, has enabled him
to mentor many medical students.
Dave is married with two children.
His latest project is Galaxy Health
Care, an innovative model of patientcentered
primary care at Los Angeles
County–USC Medical Center.
Designed to upgrade the care of
safety net hospitals, the program
serves underprivileged and underserved
individuals. The concept is an
enormous success, and Dave expects
it to expand to other L.A. hospitals.
Ed Ahart is chair of
the College’s Board of
Trustees. He delivered the State
of the College Address in Colton
Chapel, serving in the absence of
President Daniel H. Weiss. Ed
shared positive developments at the
College, including the engineering
program’s greater synchronization
with liberal arts. He also reported
Grossman House, a new residence
hall for students interested in global
topics, is expected to open this fall,
A new fish genus, Caruso
anglerfishes, is named after John
Caruso. John is a professor of
practice, ecology, and evolutionary
biology at Tulane University. He was
an assistant professor of biology at
Lafayette from 1977–83. John has
also discovered and described other
species of giant snake eel. The
the Italian Alps.
Rick Lettieri, founder of the
Lettieri Law Firm LLC in
Pittsburgh, is a pioneer in the
evolving field of electronic discovery.
In his American Bar Associationrecognized
book, The Corporate
Counsel’s Guide to In-House Legal
Systems, Rick opined that electronic
communications would eventually
transform legal discovery. In 2008,
only six of the 200 largest law firms
in the country included e-discovery
in their practice. Proving Rick’s
prediction, two years later that
number had climbed to 87.
Bill Patberg, a partner in the
Toledo, Ohio, law firm of Shumaker,
Loop & Kendrick LLP, was named
to “Leaders in Their Field” in the
area of natural resources and
USA Guide to America’s Leading
University of Minnesota.
Wayne Anthony Sousa of Pen
Argyl, Pa., and an Easton native,
died suddenly after suffering with
Parkinson’s disease. An English
graduate, he attended Lehigh
University for his master’s and Ph.D.
in literature, which he followed with
Widener Law School. Wife Maureen
and daughter Kelly Sousa Puzzi ’90
survive him.
