founded Community Bank of New
Jersey (later sold to Sun Bancorp),
established a land development and real
estate consultancy, and formed a
group of companies specializing in
building custom country homes. In
2008, he founded Seat Strap LLC in
Boca Raton, Fla., for which he is
CEO. Howard formerly owned a top
standardbred horse training facility
and maintains an active role in that
industry. He has chaired many fundraising
campaigns for the Multiple
Sclerosis Foundation and other
health-related charities. In 2003,
along with his wife and children,
he established the Schoor Family
Foundation. In honor of Howard’s
support and service, Collier Services,
a nonprofit organization that gives
at-risk and handicapped kids “a
chance to grow,” established a
humanitarian fund in his name.
Howard lives in Jupiter, Fla., and
maintains homes in upstate New
York and Manalapan, N.J.

The 50th reunion
1962 was a huge success.
Many complimented the work of our
reunion planning committee of Jim
Lyttle, Sandy Schwilk, Jim
Montgomery, and Bruce Vakiener.
Class Fund “Field Marshal” John
Weis, with the help of his staff, set a
new high mark for our class, with 74
class members attending the reunion
and 129 contributing $314,409 this
year to the College, $102,855
dedicated to the Annual Fund.
The reunion uniforms were
bright yellow and featured Roman
numerals. Mary Ealer, wife of
George, tried to whip the class into
a semblance of order for the parade.
Jeff Ruthizer promoted her to
permanent sergeant-at-arms for
all future parades.
Jim Hartsel writes: “The class
memory book is a fine document.
The illustrious precedent for it was
established by Matt Thomases in
1997. It is a great memento of this
reunion and one I will treasure.”

“The class cocktail party and
dinner were a big success. Eating,
drinking, and talking seem to be
major strengths of our class.
President Ruthizer exhibited his
Johnny Carson-style repartee and
was probably instrumental in
convincing the College to keep the
bar open for an extra two hours.
We joked that John Beckum, at a
claimed 103 years of age, was the
oldest alumnus present and proud of
it. He was among the veterans, about
25% of those alumni present, who
stood for a rousing round of
applause. There was a moment
of silence in memory of our 41
classmates who moved on to
eternal rest.
“The size of our class gift was a
shocker. We had three contributions
of more than $50,000 and many
others reached deep into their
pockets.”
Although he tried back in
September, Matt Thomases could
not get a room at The Lafayette
Inn, which was his Pi Lambda Phi
fraternity home. Joe Cornell had a
reservation, however, and told Matt
that he found ample evidence of
Pi Lam scandals in corners of the
inn. Matt also talked with Jim
Livingood, who asked for a copy of
Matt’s book The New Judaism. (Jim
wants to gain insights into the faith,
as his daughter is married to an
Israeli.) Matt had a great reunion
meeting with Steve Hyman and
Max Rothman.
A small group of alumni and
spouses met in Doylestown, Pa., at
an event hosted by Bruce and Dana
Applestein: Dick and Mary Gilbert,
Rich and Roxanna Flickinger, Ted
and Bev Elsasser, Steve and Carolyn
Altenderfer, and Jack and
Dottie Holme.
