The Plumbing Industry Commission
endeavours to deliver effective and
responsible industry governance by:
• continuously monitoring the effectiveness of the Victorian
plumbing system to enhance the amenity, safety, health
and sustainability of plumbing work
• building a more innovative, transparent and responsible
organisation.
Key achievements
In 2007–08, the Commission worked
with the Department of Planning and
Community Development to ensure
regulatory excellence by continuing a major
review of the current Plumbing Regulations
1998, which are due to sunset in November
2008. This included consulting with key
industry stakeholders to ensure that new
Plumbing Regulations reflect industry,
community and Government expectations.
The Commission worked with the
Department of Planning and Community
Development and key stakeholders to have
the plumbing related amendments included
in the Building (Amendment) Bill 2008.
The Bill subsequently passed through both
houses of the Victorian Parliament.
The Commission also improved the
effectiveness of the plumbing regulatory
framework by being actively involved with
the review or development of standards. In
particular, it attended the Water Efficiency
Labelling and Standards Forum to examine
a proposal to provide a star rating for
instantaneous water heaters and clothes
washer/dryers and review the development
of work underway on three-litre single-flush
toilet cisterns.
Another achievement was the Commission’s
contribution to a consultation paper
setting out the key steps to achieving the
transition of the work conducted under
the auspices of the Australia-New Zealand
Reciprocity Agreement to the National
Plumbing Regulators Forum.
