Environmental best practice This year, the Commission extended the audit process to capture 5 Star sustainability data and ensure that environmental water efficiencies and energy compliance are being achieved. This included audits for rainwater tanks, solar panels and recycled water installations.
The Plumbing Industry Commission works to ensure a sustainable built environment by: • promoting sustainable practices to further the Victorian Government’s sustainability objectives • strengthening compliance with energy and water efficiency requirements. Key achievements In 2007–08, the Commission collected more than 600 contributions from the industry through the PlumbSmarter initiative. Collated in The path to a greener plumbing industry report, the contributions provided a range of ideas and suggestions as to how the industry could become more sustainable. These changes have now been categorised into eight opportunities for saving water and energy. One opportunity that is already being put into action is a project which aims to save 450 million litres of water used in the routine maintenance and testing of fire sprinklers. This is being conducted in partnership with City West Water, South East Water, Yarra Valley Water, the Department of Sustainability and Environment and the Building Commission. This year, the Commission extended the audit process to capture 5 Star sustainability data and ensure that environmental water efficiencies and energy compliance are being achieved. This included audits for rainwater tanks, solar panels and recycled water installations. Other achievements included: • hosting a recycled water forum involving six metropolitan and regional water authorities. The aim of this forum was to develop a uniform approach to recycled water installations in all water authority areas • delivering two presentations in Bendigo and Echuca, sponsored by Coliban Water, on recycled water to 180 practitioners • jointly launching with the Building Commission the Make Your Home Green online portal – a one-stop shop for information on sustainability in the built environment – which received an impressive 28,850 distinct visits between 3 May and 30 June 2008.
