Community accountability In 2007–08, the Commission continued to protect the integrity of plumbing standards by carrying out audits and inspections and conducting investigations into non-compliant practitioners.
The Plumbing Industry Commission continuously works to ensure safe plumbing services for the community by: • maintaining consumer confidence in plumbing services • informing consumers about plumbing services • optimising the investigation and domestic plumbing dispute resolution process • monitoring the insurance system to ensure it provides adequate consumer safeguards. Key achievements In 2007–08, the Commission continued to protect the integrity of plumbing standards by carrying out audits and inspections and conducting investigations into noncompliant practitioners. The Commission conducted 609 investigations into practitioners and unregistered persons, one per cent less than in 2006–07. The number of practitioners brought before disciplinary hearings increased by 18 per cent, while the number of unregistered persons prosecuted in the Magistrates Court decreased by 52 per cent. The Commission completed a total of 17,441 audits, representing 5.1 per cent of the total number of Compliance Certificates lodged. It also audited 2,404 below-ground sanitary drains; representing 5.5 per cent of the total number of drains booked for inspection and achieved its target of five per cent. Other achievements included: • launching a monthly e-bulletin as part of a broader strategy to increase practitioner awareness and understanding of the Commission’s functions • worked extensively on improving its communication during the year by conducting a major review of all its communications material and continued to deliver the new look InPipe magazine, previously known as Registered Plumber • establishing a program of six-monthly workshops with local government and industry stakeholders to help strengthen the relationship between the industry and local government.
