Redbacks win 4 flags
The Redbacks won 11 and lost 6 finals in a tough Finals round. OC won 4
premierships with another flag up for grabs yesterday at St. Paul‟s (1sts Volleyball).
The Redbacks lost 4 Grand Finals.

OC Tennis finished the season on a high with 3 wins and no losses. The
Firsts won a cliff hanger.
OC Volleyball won 3 flags, none more satisfying than the Year 8s,the only
team to pinch a premiership from 2 nd spot
OC Basketball could not convert a great season into silverware with both the
8s and 9s unable to topple JPC. The Year 8 match was the most exciting
Grand Final of the round and went down to the wire
The Year 9 cricketers won a flag and the First XI consolidated third spot on
the ladder with a comfortable win over WMAC.
Congratulations to our Premier teams:
Year 8 Volleyball coached by Shaun Griggs
Year 9 Volleyball coached by Lauren Noble and managed by Ingrid Pride
Ormiston College Sails to Victory
Victorious in five out of five races again last weekend, our team finished Term one as School Team-
Racing Division Champions.
The best team-racing competitors combine boat speed with a thorough knowledge of the rules, to
manoeuver their boats through a series of “white-knuckle” race situations. The skipper must have
the ability to quickly analyse situations on the water and react to them. With so much happening at
once, skippers and crew must have a heightened awareness of what is going on around them and
be able to react to it instantly.
The skippers race not only their own sailboat, but in team-racing they must be aware of and
coordinate the other two boats in the team. This not only requires great boat-handling skills and
crew coordination but an ability to predict opponent‟s moves.
The best teams combine these qualities with a „sixth sense‟ bred from familiarity between the crew
members; an attribute which delineates the greatest of competitors. Not surprisingly, the principle
idea behind team racing is that individual success is subservient to the performance of the team as a
whole. Rather than counting boat scores, the aggregate score of the team is counted; with the team
with the lowest score winning the competition.
So with the conclusion of the Term One Team-Racing competition, it is with enormous pride that we
acknowledge our skippers and crews in Ormiston Sailing. Congratulations Ormiston, you have
sailed and raced with conviction and determination equal to the best observed in all divisions of
racing.OC Sailing‟s next challenge will be the Queensland State Championships held during the
school holidays.
Firsts Basketball
First Basketball saw a very good win against WMAC
defeating the opposition by 11 points. Impressive
achievements of the day came from Chane who
constantly put 100% into her efforts. Other positive
points of the game came from Emily Holzberger who
played the whole game with intensity. All girls should
be rewarded with their efforts which won the game. I
am so proud of each and every one of you for turning
up with your game faces on and having a positive
attitude constantly.
Tyeka Close (Captain)
Seconds Basketball
Our final game for the season was a match against
CHAC playing off for third position. The game was
always going to be a close encounter as the girls only
defeated CHAC by one point in the first round.
Ormiston scored the first two points from the tap,
followed by another couple of quick baskets.
Unfortunately Katie was carried from the court with an
ankle injury which concerned the whole team.
Focusing back on the game the girls continued to ease
ahead of CHAC giving them confidence to relax and
play their style of game. Though they were very aware
CHAC wouldn‟t be giving up easily and they had to
fight for every rebound and loose ball. By half time
Ormiston had a comfortable lead, however CHAC came
within six points at the end of the third quarter giving
the girls a scare. In the final quarter the girls played
their best basketball for the season, with Bec scoring
from the play of the day, followed by Jamie‟s awesome
drive and a skilful step around 3 players by Jessie to
finish the game running out winners 31–17 points.
Judy Zemek (Coach)
Year 8 Basketball
Our final game and we gave it everything! JPC had a
good start but as for the game they were not really the
better team on the day, we were just inaccurate when it
came to sinking the baskets. OC were up with only a
few minutes left in the final quarter but this was not
going to be our year. The final score was only 3 points
difference being 36 to 33 which put us into a close
s e c o n d p l a c e f o r t h e s e a s o n .
On behalf of the team I would like to say a special
thank you to Trish our Coach, she was fantastic we
learnt so much from her and after only a few games
she changed us from 10 girls to a team.
To the team I would like to also say thanks as we have
all played well over the term and we should feel proud
with the result.
Last Saturday, the 2nds Volleyball boys pulled
together for their last game. An all-round solid effort
from everyone proved to be too much for the CHAC
side to handle, with the Ormiston boys winning 3-0.
Great mention must go to the CHAC boys for
providing a fun and at times challenging game. The
game started off well for Ormiston with a narrow
victory in the first set that could have gone either
way, the second set was much the same, but with
CHAC upping their game. The third set could not of
come soon enough as the boys were hard pressed to
keep up performance. Again CHAC stepped up their
game, but Ormiston‟s response was resounding with
many big hits from our German import Tom and
great defensive plays from all. Overall the season has
been great with only the single final round loss, many
thanks to our coach, Mr Ashley Noble, and our
manager, Mr Peter Hoens.
Year 10 Volleyball
Year 10 Volleyball Boys played the Grand Final
against Cannon Hill Anglican College at home. As we
arrived to the game, we were looking to become
undefeated Premiers. In the first set we looked like
were going to go close, but sadly we let the final
points slip away. In the second set we were
determined to win the set. Sadly, though, we could
not contain CHAC and in the early stages we let them
gain a hefty lead on us. Although we managed to
claw back a few points, they were the better team on
the day and took out the premiership.
Year 8 Volleyball
After losing to CHAC in the first round of the season
we were determined to beat them this time round‟.
All the boys showed up early and were ready to go.
We started the 1 st set off well only losing a few points
before we started to get going. After some great
serves from Mitchell Masaryk we found ourselves up
by 6 with only 5 points left in the set. CHAC started to
get on a roll but eventually we took out the first set 25
-20. In the second set we fell asleep for the first few
points but then from a massive serving streak from
Byron Perry we were up 22-8. A few minutes later we
had won the second by 16 points. Good work to all
the boys for playing great all season and winning the
premiership and hopefully we can do it again next
Firsts Cricket v WMAC
Last Weekend was the final round for the Firsts; it was
a play off for third place against WMAC. Previously in
the season we had faced and comfortably beaten them,
however, it was a new game and the boys knew that
WMAC would not be walk over. Losing the toss and
being sent in, OC was on the back foot from the start
losing wickets early and consistently throughout the
innings. In the end we were dismissed for 110, with
Justin Ormandy again being the rock of the innings
scoring his second half century of the season. Being
forced to bowl before Lunch, saw an opportunity to
take early wickets; this was done having the visitors 2
down by lunch. Immediately after lunch OC were on
the attack taking 4 wickets, having the WMAC team on
the ropes at 5/12. After that it wasn‟t long until the
whole team were dismissed for 56, leaving OC the
victors by 54 runs, claiming 3 rd position.
Seconds Cricket
The 2nds team played Canterbury College for 4 th and
3 rd position. The boys took to the field down a few
players due to injury but were able to recruit Jackson
Leach and jack Morton to have a team of 10. We won
the toss and chose to bat first, the boys managed to
put a very defendable score of 112. Then when
Canterbury came into bat they were off to a flying start
scoring 70 in the first 7 overs. They managed to chase
down our target with 4 wickets in hand. Although we
placed 4 th the boys had a great season as a week
before the season there was no 2nds team and a big
thanks goes to Mr Molyneux and Jack Porter
MVP: Glen Morton
Brayden Gurney (Captain)
Year 8 Cricket
The Year 8 team played a nail-biting final against St
Paul‟s. We headed out with high hopes and knew we
were in for a tough match. When we arrived, we saw
the grounds were soaked and the outfield was very
muddy. The pitch was also on a massive slant and we
couldn‟t believe we were going to be playing the final
on this field. We ventured on regardless and we lost
the toss, with St Paul‟s electing to field first. Our
opening batsmen headed out and from the start we
could tell they were a bit nervous as they were facing a
bowler with blistering pace for our age. The first wicket
dropped quite early and we knew this wasn‟t a good
start. Some good mid order hitting from Henry, and
two massive sixes from Trent helped us along but all in
all it wasn‟t a very good batting performance. We were
all out for 98 runs. We headed out to field knowing
that we would have to perform at our best. We did just
that and their opening batsmen just weren‟t getting the
runs required. We soon got them out and we were in a
good position, when a student stepped up to the
crease. We knew we would have to get him out early.
We set our field deep and hoped for the best but it
wasn‟t enough and he was soon hitting fours and sixes
all over the park. They picked up the run rate and
quickly got our total with a few wickets too spare.
Overall, it was a good season .
Over the weekend, the first girls were pumped and
ready to take on Canterbury College for third position.
The day started slowly for the girls, whereby we had
a mixed bag of results. While Sam Penney and myself
had a great doubles game we were unfortunate to go
down narrowly to the opposition. Sam Lee played
the number four singles and had a fantastic win, as
well as Gemma's singles and her and Gabby's
fantastic doubles win. However the standout of the
day was undoubtedly Gabby's singles, whereby she
fought back hard to win the match 6-4. This match
was incredibly important as it was the last game of
the day and the result depended on a win. Gabby
dealt with the pressures of the game, which gave us
the overall score of 3 sets all, 28 games to
Canterbury's 26. So well done girls although the
season has been unlucky at stages, all fought hard to
get where we were on the ladder. Thank you to
everyone who came and supported us this season, all
of the parents, coaches Sean and Sam, and of course
Mrs Glasson for her hard work and dedication to the
teams this season. Most of all thank you to my
wonderful team, it has been such a pleasure to be
your captain and you are a team I am so very proud
of. Goodluck for next year Gem and Gabs.
Despite losing our chance at winning the
premiership, the girls should be extremely proud of
their victory in their last match against St
Columban‟s, gaining them a spot in 3 rd place. We
won all sets and finished with a score of 36-13. This
shows a vast improvement from weeks before where
we had only won with a tight score of 28-25. Isabel
and Ellen played one of their best doubles match and
came out with a victory of 6-2. As usual, Carly and
Olivia put in their best effort on the court, also
winning their doubles match 6-2. Despite windy
conditions, the girls also managed to win their
singles matches. Ellen had some great rallies in her
match, winning a close match of 6-4. Also, despite
being sick, Carly still played with determination, and
won her singles match 6-3. The whole team should
be commended on their hard work and persistence
this season. Every year we are getting closer and
closer to the premiership, so hopefully next year it
will finally be ours.
JTAS Swimming Carnival
JTAS Swimming was held on the 20th March at the Sleeman Sports and Aquatic Centre. Forty-six students
headed to the Aquatic Centre for a big day of racing and everyone was excited to compete for Ormiston College.
The event order of the day was butterfly, breaststroke, freestyle, backstroke, finishing with relays. Before
competition began we were faced with some reshuffling of the team to account for illness and injury. It was terrific
to see our reserves so willing and able to step up to the challenge presented to them. Two fine examples were
Sarah Hesse and little Abby Vester swimming the 50m butterfly – one of the harder events. Throughout the day
many OC swimmers swam personal best times and everyone represented the College in an excellent manner. At
the mid-way point of the carnival, OC was a few points shy of St Peter‟s Lutheran College. With the backstroke and
relay events to come it was going to be a mighty task to defeat St Peter‟s. At the end of the carnival, OC finished
second overall to St Peter‟s by 9.5 points. Our 12 and 13 years girls place first for their age group and the OC girls
placed second overall for their age group. The OC boys also placed a respectable third.
A total of 10 records were broken by OC swimmers, including:
Michaela Ryan – 50m breaststroke, 50m butterfly, 50m backstroke
Teneka Ash – 50m butterfly, 50m div 2 freestyle, 50m backstroke even though Teneka placed 2 nd
Lance Ash - 50m backstroke
A big thank you is extended to Mrs Jamieson, Mr Pincott, Craig Davidson and Mrs Scanlon for their management
District Sport
Throughout the year students born in 2000-2002 are eligible to trial for various district sporting teams organised
by Redlands District Primary Schools Sports. Students interested in trialling for a spot in a district side must
display a high proficiency in the skills required to play that particular sport. For a student to be selected in a district
sporting them it is most likely they are the best player in their age in a school team or club team. Nominations for
trials will be announced in the Redback and you can register your son or daughters interest in trialling by emailing
Jack Pincott (j.pincott@ormistoncollege.com.au).
District Tennis Trials – Boys and Girls
Trial Date: Thursday 26 April (8:15 am to 4:00pm)
Ages: Students born in 2000-2002
Nominations close: Wednesday 18 April
District Soccer Trials - Boys
Trial Date: Monday 30 April and Tuesday 1 May (3:30pm to 5:00pm)
Ages: Students born in 2000 and 2001
Nominations close: Friday 20 April
Please note: Ormiston College is permitted to send three students to these trials. Depending on the number of
students wishing to trial a school trial may be required to choose the three students.
