This significant occasion recognises the leadership role played byso many of our students and the impact that they have within the College. The House Captains play a very importantrole in motivating their teams and instilling a very friendly rivalry amongst Laver, Chappell, Wickham and Norman. OurStudent Mentors have a pivotal role in the College, providing a very direct link for our Year 8 students. They havealready been busy in their role and were instrumental to the success of the Year 8 Orientation Day on Tuesday 29January.PREFECTS' INVESTITUREToday, the Senior School held a special Assembly to officially induct the Prefects and College Captains of 2013 tooffice. Our guest for this special occasion, Ms Chantal Le Feuvre, was herself a Captain of Ormiston College (2002) and isnow a member of the Board of Directors. Ms Le Feuvre encouraged our student leaders of 2013 with an inspirationalmessage to strive to enjoy their leadership roles and motivated them to endeavor to do their best in all situations.I know the Prefects of 2013 will do a fine job as they lead the student body in their Senior year.UNIFORM AND PRESENTATIONI have included below an extract from the 2013 Senior Handbook (Student Diary) in relation to presentation and moreparticularly focusing on hair. For the entire policy on uniform and presentation, please consult pages 10 and 11 of theDiary."Girls' hair is to be worn in a conservative style devoid of hair products and/or hair extensions. Girls' hair must remainits natural colour. Girls' hair of shoulder length must be tied back. Hair longer than shoulder length when tied back mustbe plaited in a single plait. Hair is to be tied with brown, black, or maroon hair elastic and finished off with a maroonribbon or maroon scrunchie (obtainable from the Uniform Shop). The conservative style of a girls' hair must enable herto wear the College Girls' Dress Hat with her head in the hat. Girls' fringes are to be neat, tidy and not impeding theirvision. Fringes longer than eyebrows need to be pinned back in a tidy manner, as does hair which may fall or wisparound the face. Hair is to be pinned back with either bobby-pins or hair slides. Bobby-pins or hair slides are to bebrown, black or maroon and, in keeping with the conservative style, they are to be of a plain design and free of anydecorations. Girls are expected to maintain their hair as neatly presented across the school day.Page 4/21Laying the foundation for lifelong achievement

Week 2 Term 1, 08 Feb 2013Boys' hair must remain its natural colour. Boys' hair must be cut in a conservative College cut. Boy's hair is to be neatlybrushed or combed. To maintain a conservative style, it is important that the hair is kept short, washed and free fromhair product. An appropriate length means that the fringe should not be longer than the position of the eyebrows andthe hair should not be over the shirt collar at the back. Hair should not be shorter than a number 3 clipper. Boys are toremain clean shaven at all times. Boys are expected to maintain their hair as neatly presented across the school day."Of note, female students are prohibited from wearing their hair in a bun and must therefore pay special attention to theabove rules to ensure compliance. I always believe it is important for parents to know the rules for uniform andpresentation as it requires a collective effort from students, staff and parents to maintain the College standards. In thecase of girls' hair, a student who has a good supply of Ormiston College scrunchies, ribbons, elastics etc. at home ismore likely to prepare herself in the morning to meet the College expectations.Craig AskinActing Head of Senior SchoolFrom the Deputy to the HeadmasterTRANSITION TO NEW UNIFORM ITEMS COMPLETE IN 2013Congratulations to Parents, in particular, and to Students for presenting at the start of 2013 wearing the new hats andties which are now the Ormiston College Dress Uniform. After 2012 being our year in transition, it is fabulous that 2013sees the students of the College wearing the new items. At the Junior School's and the Senior School's Assemblies lastFriday, looking out to the assembled students was an impressive sight for the Headmaster and I, and for all theteachers on stage. The students certainly portrayed what the new items were designed to showcase about our College- a sharp, modern look for the school students of Ormiston College. The College appreciates the efforts of our Parents to meet the expectations and standards of the College in so manythings. The very high standard of our uniform is one of our primary expectations. The wearing of the uniform and theoverall presentation of each student is about showing pride and respect in one's self and one's school. The link whichthis has with a student's attitude and motivation to learn so as to achieve "one's personal best performance" is a strongone. Thank you always for your efforts to support the College expectations of dress and presentation. It shows! We are definitely looking forward to Terms 2 and 3 when we will see the effect of the whole of the Senior School in theirCollege Blazers and the Junior School in their College Pullovers. While the impetus for the minor review of College uniform was to produce a more cohesive image and to sharpen theimage for the College of our uniform, it is quite appropriate that the year the transition is complete is 2013, our 25thBirthday, the year we celebrate the maturing of Ormiston College.Page 5/21Laying the foundation for lifelong achievement

In our 25th year, this acknowledges ourteachers and also offers them College standard hats for when they undertake such duties as Yard Duty and for othertimes when they have to stand in the sun for significant periods.TRAVELLING AROUND THE ROUNDABOUTS: IT WORKS AND IS SAFEThe flow of traffic in the short time of the arrival and departure peaks each morning and afternoon has been greatlyhelped by more parents doing the right thing, and that is travelling to the end of Dundas Street after 7.45am and goinground the roundabout before peeling off to drop off or to access the car parks OR by dropping off behind the Theatreand then turning left on our internal road to go around the internal western roundabout near the BOQ Oval. I joined my host sistersand attended our sister school Kanagawa Gakuen. As the days went by, I gradually got used to the new surroundingsand made many friends and met many teachers and other students. After school I was also able to visit many of thedifferent school clubs, such as the baton twirling and Japanese tea ceremony clubs. A few afternoons were also spentgoing out with friends.During my stay, I was fortunate enough to get a long weekend with my host family. On the Saturday I was invited tomeet all the students who will be visiting our school this March. The girls were very enthusiastic about visiting Australiaand Ormiston College. On the Sunday I was able to spend a fantastic day with my host sisters at Disneyland. Thenumber of people lined up to enter the theme park was just astounding. Monday was also a holiday as the people ofJapan celebrated Adult's Day. On this day, young adults who turn the age of twenty wear kimonos (traditional Japaneseclothing) and attend ceremonies. I was able to see many beautiful kimonos as I spent this day shopping in Yokohamawith my host sister and a friend. The food in Japan was one of my favourite things and the convenience of vending machines was amazing. I tried asmany different types of sweets and foods during my stay as I could and I must say it was delicious. My trip to Japan has become a very memorable experience.
