Redbacks Record Round
The Redbacks created history last Saturday winning every game they
played. Unfortunately the legendary Headmaster’s treat will not apply because ten
matches were washed out. However it was a great morning for the mighty
Redbacks who continue to impress so far this season.
OC Basketball enjoyed their best round ever against St. Paul’s with four very
comfortable wins and a cliffhanging victory to the Year 10s who had never
beaten St. Paul’s.
Another whitewash for OC Volleyball but the Firsts nearly blew a two set lead
winning narrowly in the 5 th set.
St Columban’s and JPC. Tomorrow it’s off to Caboolture for a tough encounter
with St Columban’s.
The Redback Reporter Term 1 — Week 6/10
Girls’ Basketball
Ormiston College v St Paul’s School
This round for girls’ basketball is always difficult. Over
the past five years, St Paul’s have been able to get on
top of OC generally 3 matches to 2 to win the round.
Last year, OC was able to reverse this trend winning the
round 3-2 for the first time ever. In 2012, we have gone
one better. Inflicting a 5-0 win record last Saturday is
the first time OC girls’ basketball has been able to
achieve wins in all divisions. The win like this is built
around having very strong and competitive Year 8 and
9 teams. As the co-ordinator, I am very proud of the
manner in which the coaching panel and the players
work together to develop the game play, skills and
more importantly attitude required to be competitive.
Whilst achieving a milestone last weekend, OC has to
bounce back once again this week by being more
focused, more determined and more clinical in their
game play and skill execution in order to beat St
Columban’s at home. OC has not had the better of St
Columban’s school in match results in 5 years. We have
to go one better than last year’s result of a 3-2 loss.
Ladder wise, this is a HUGE round! I know that OC will
step up and be competitive. Good luck girls!
Wayne Jarrett (Co-ordinator)
Firsts Basketball
Ormiston College v St Paul’s
Firsts girls basketball won their first game against St
Pauls coming away with a 41 to 19 win. For the first
time this year all girls settled into their game quickly
and didn’t let the opponents dictate how the game was
to be played. OC were able to play to their strengths
through quick transition, good passing, great team
work and fantastic rebounding. Kayla Duckham played
outstandingly in all areas of the game scoring 9 points.
Together with Emily Holzberger, they dominated in the
fourth quarter scoring all baskets but one. All players
settled well into their roles and we are excited to see
what happens in future games.
Tyeka Close (Captain)
Seconds Basketball
Ormiston College v St Paul’s
Despite the humidity, the seconds played with
everything they had and won 30 – 7 against St Pauls.
From the jump, the girls put into practice what they
had learnt the day before, winning the tap and just
narrowly missing their first attempt at a basket. Sadly
just minutes into the game Izzy injured her shoulder
and was unable to play the remainder of the game.
Even though we were a player down we still played a
great game. Rachel Levi played her best defensive
game and Kirsty Neale was placing herself perfectly
beside the key for an easy layup and top scored with 9
points. The girls are fired up for a close match against
St Columban’s tomorrow, determined to keep their
winning streak.
Kaitlin Hart (Captain)
Year 10 Basketball
Ormiston College v St Paul’s
From the first sound of the buzzer to the last, OC
fought their toughest game yet. We all knew, coming
up against St Pauls would be a real challenge, so
giving up was not an option. After being beaten by St
Pauls in Years 8 and 9 (and for some since Year 6!),
OC was determined to give everything they had to
defeat St Pauls. Being more aware of our roles whilst
on the court (more so than previous games), all
members contributed to our success. It was great to
see our least experienced players contribute with
some amazing plays and shots. All of the hard work
at training is beginning to pay off. It was a fight to the
finish. With 2 minutes to go the match was tied at 22-
22. OC was determined to restrict St Paul’s sharp
shooter from scoring 3 points with St Paul’s trying to
stop OC from scoring inside the zone. Olivia Wyle’s
perseverance was rewarded when she converted a St
Paul’s team foul at the free throw line. Leading 24-22
with 50 seconds remaining, OC was determined to
control the ball. After a few more ‘twists and turns’,
OC gained possession and controlled the ball to the
final siren. Top scorers were; Mikayla Price, 11 points;
Sarah Wildner, 6 and Olivia Wyles, 6. It is our third
win of the season and the effort reflected our
determination to play for each other. A great team
effort, girls!
Mikayla Price (Captain)
Olivia Wyles sinks both free throws,
on the buzzer,
for the Year 10's to win by two points

Year 9 Basketball
Ormiston College v St Paul’s
The Year 9 basketball girls took to the court against St
Paul’s, fired up and determined to crack the 100 mark
again, despite the shortened game time. We fell short
of our goal with the final score being 81–6 in our
favour. We have had a fantastic start to the season of
2012 but are well aware of the tough competition that
awaits us in the coming weeks. Everyone played a
great game and the player of the match was Michaela
Mulder. We look forward to playing St Columban’s this
weekend. This match-up will require everyone to be on
their game after a number of easy games to start the
season. Great job everyone!
Ellaine Grondin (Captain)
Year 8 Basketball
Ormiston College v St Paul’s
It was another good win for the year 8 girls’ basketball
team, with the final score being 34-4. Our 3 top scorers
for the day were Ellie, with 3 baskets, Vanisha with 5
baskets and Emily with 9 baskets. The entire team are
training hard with only a few games left until the end
of the season. The challenge this weekend is to stay
focused.
Elke Jackel (Coach)
Firsts Volleyball
Ormiston College v St Paul’s
The firsts knew that last weekend’s game would have
been our toughest of the season. Although it seemed
as though we should have wrapped up the game pretty
quickly, we got what we expected: a two and a half
hour fight to the death. OC came out firing and
comfortably took the first two sets. We then switched
off and narrowly lost the following two sets, leading to
a fifth set. Deciding we had to step up now if we
wanted a victory, the boys came out in the fifth with a 9
-3 score line. Continuing this dominance, we were able
to succeed with a four point win. With that game out of
the way, we look to continue a successful season
where we will likely meet with St Paul’s again in the
finals.
Harvey Meale (Captain)
Year 10 Volleyball
Ormiston College v St Paul’s
Last weekend Year 10 Boys’ Volleyball played at home
against St Paul’s. We came out strongly early in both
the first and second sets, with some great serving and
spiking. In the third set the opposition tried to make a
comeback, clawing back some of our lead, but we
retained it to take out the match 3 sets to nil. Everyone
played well.
Jack Frampton (Captain)
Page 4 SPORTS INFORMATION LINE 3821 8986
Year 9 Volleyball
Ormiston College v St Paul’s
Our home match against St Paul’s on Saturday
ended in another win for OC. Both teams were equal
in terms of gameplay throughout the match;
however, St Paul’s players were not able to return
the Redbacks’ lethal serves. Jacob, Brent and Alex
scored multiple points and the team held their serve.
Nevertheless, it was the team’s captain, QV, who was
able to mount multiple streaks and thus spread fear
among St Paul’s backline. The final score was 3 sets
to nil for OC and the team is playing St Columban’s
this weekend.
Quangvy Ho (Captain)
Year 8 Volleyball
Ormiston College v St Paul’s
We had a resounding win again. We played better in
this game and we were far more consistent with
using the three shot set piece plays that Mr Griggs,
our Coach, has been getting us to do. We played
well and were hitting the ball deeper, making it
harder for the opposition to get the ball back.
Mr Griggs this week had three “Players of the Match:
Jayden Smith, Matt Smallwood and Byron Perry.
Matt Smallwood (Captain)

Class PE
This week saw a change over from Years 4 to 7 swimming classes to a cross country unit. The Year 1 to 3 students
entered the pool for the first time this week and will continue until the end of the term. In previous years Year 1 to
7 students could share the pool in the first five weeks, however, due to the increased demand on the pool this year
this was not possible for Term 1. Years 1 to 7 will continue swimming in Term 4, ensuring 10 weeks of swimming
and water-based activities are provided. Preps will enter the water for the first time in Term 4.
