Year 9 Parent Teacher Interviews
From the Headmaster
We begin Term Two with the news that Ormiston College has been
crowned the most successful School in Term One T.A.S. Competition, a
feat that OC has only achieved previously in 2004 and 2009.
The College sporting program is just part of a comprehensive co-curricular
program and offers students healthy physical activity and enjoyment while
teaching them the benefits of self-discipline, team work, mateship, mutual
respect and fair play. It enables students to use their leisure time
constructively and channel their energy, competitiveness and aggression in
personally and socially beneficial ways.
Being part of a Redbacks team is also the catalyst for creating lifelong
memories and can promote a sense of community and pride in
achievement, leading to increased awareness of the obligations of
citizenship.
Congratulations to all competitors, coaches, coordinators and supporters
who contributed to Term One sport. We hope you enjoyed the experience
and thank you most sincerely for the spirit, pride and recognition you bring
to Ormiston College.
pause as a College next week to honour the ANZAC legend. A special
whole school assembly in the Somerset Sports Centre on Wednesday at 11.05am will bring the Junior and Senior
Schools together as one united College to reflect upon the courage and extreme sacrifice given to protect the freedoms
we enjoy today.
We know the Australian way of life is one of the very best in the world but when we witness incidents such as that
which occurred at the Boston Marathon this week, mounting tensions in Korea and endless reports of conflict and loss
in the Middle East, we know that the freedom and values that define Australia can never be taken for granted.
Hence, as we reflect upon the ANZAC effort, Term Two is also a time when the College espouses the virtues of
friendliness, tolerance and respect for others. Our focus on Getting Along in Term Two each year sees our students
thinking about how our actions may affect other people, and why playing by fair and reasonable rules is in the best
interests of any cohesive community.
Parents are more than welcome to join us for the College ANZAC service next week.
From the Deputy to the Headmaster
WE RETURN TO THE BUSINESS OF LEARNING
After holidays, it is good to be back at school for Term Two. The College once again is busy with students and staff
already undertaking Learning in all its various forms. All of us need to keep our eyes on the "game" of learning. We
need to know what it's about and what is there for us.
In the world of the late Twentieth Century, students needed to master academic skills and also to acquire a set of skills
that would last a lifetime. In the Twenty-first Century, academic learning together with acquiring learning skills is still
important, but in the fast-paced world in which we live, students must become nimble, creative thinkers who can work
well with others.
Consider the following:
COLLOBORATION: Students are able to work effectively with diverse groups and show flexibility in making
compromises so as to achieve common, agreed goals.
CREATIVITY: Students are able to generate and improve on original ideas and also work in creative partnerships with
others.
COMMUNICATION: Students are able to communicate effectively across multiple media and for various purposes.
CRITICAL THINKING: Students are able to analyse, evaluate and understand complex systems and apply strategies to
solve problems.
Students still need to be good readers and writers. Using mathematics to solve problems, and seeing the world through
the lens of the scientist are essential for today's learners. Students also need to draw their own findings from history's
Page 4/15
Laying the foundation for lifelong achievement

Week 1 Term 2, 19 Apr 2013
lessons, and understand and manage their environments; however, today's Learners at Ormiston College need to learn
through teaching strategies which promote THINKING for problem solving in creative ways. Ormiston College is
definitely keeping our eyes on the agenda for Twenty-first Century Learning with our focus on teaching and learning
within our use of the Dimensions of Learning Pedagogy and the integration of ICTs as meaningful learning tools.
LOOKING AHEAD TO AUGUST
This year, we will just have to consider the month of August as Dance and Ball month at Ormiston College. The Year
12s Senior Formal will be held on Friday, 2 August at Lurleen's Restaurant, Sirromet Winery and the 25th Anniversary
Ball will be held in the O.C. Ballroom on Saturday, 24 August. Planning for the Ball is underway and we are about to
begin the process for organising the Senior Formal. In fact, Parents of Year 12s will have received a letter from me this
week with regard to the Formal.
Merilyn Walsh
Deputy to the Headmaster
From the Head of Senior School
Welcome to Term Two and I hope that everyone enjoyed the break from College routine and you are refreshed and
ready for a new term. After taking Long Service Leave in Term One, I have enjoyed catching up with staff and hearing
about the many successes that occurred throughout the term.
One of the joys of working with a quality staff is that when the opportunity arises I know there are very capable people
available to step up and act in positions of responsibility when key staff take leave. I extend my congratulations and
thank Craig Askin (Acting Head of Senior School), Sarndra Bown (Acting Dean of Students), Malcolm McBride (Acting
Director of Activities), Peta Egan (Acting Year 10 Coordinator) and Margaret-Ann Hunt (Acting Year 12 Coordinator) for
their hard work and dedication during Term One in their respective roles.
Also in Term One, we were fortunate to have the services of Bernadette Pangrazio who taught in the Business and PE
Departments and capably filled the role of Cricket Coordinator. Showing her versatility, Bernadette will now join the
Junior School for the remainder of the year.
STAFFING UPDATE
On Monday we will welcome Elise Hickey who will teach Music in both the Junior and Senior Schools. Elise will replace
Megan Long who has been an integral part of the Music Department for the past 7 years. We thank Megan for her
valuable contribution to the College.
Dean of Studies, Chris Challen is on Long Service Leave this term and Head of English Peter Hoens will be Acting
Dean of Studies for Term Two. Consequently, Kylie Penniket will act as Head of English and Drama in Term Two and I
offer my congratulations and best wishes for a successful Term for both Peter and Kylie.
YEAR 11 CAMP
This week our Year 11 students participated in a four day camp at Camp Somerset. Mr Graham Hyman facilitated a
number of sessions that explored the theme of "Leading yourself to success". I heard many positive comments about
the camp and the concepts that were introduced at camp will be further developed throughout the remainder of Year 11
to prepare our students for being the Senior Students of Ormiston College in 2014.
Thank you to David Bunting, Peta Egan, Del Harker, Glen Henville, Kirsten Murray, Ivan Silvey, Chris Brown and Year
11 Coordinator Wayne Jarrett for their commitment to the Year 11 Camp.
YEAR 9 NAPLAN TESTING IN LITERACY AND NUMERACY
The testing dates are Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, 14, 15 and 16 May. The NAPLAN test sessions will occur in
the morning before morning tea on each of these days.
To assist our Year 9 students to understand the nature and style of this national testing, we have provided them with
some pre-test practice. By the time the NAPLAN tests come around our Year 9 students should feel confident that they
are familiar with the format of the test and are well equipped to give their best effort.
YEAR 9 & 10 PARENT/TEACHER/ STUDENT INTERVIEWS REMINDER
A reminder that the Year 9 Parent/Teacher/Student Interviews will be held on Tuesday, 23 April and the following week
the Year 10 Parent/Teacher/Student Interviews will be held on Wednesday, 1 May. Online bookings through Parent
Lounge for the Year 9 interviews are available now and the closing date is Monday, 22 April. Bookings for the Year 10
ANZAC DAY
Next week, on Wednesday, 24 April we will acknowledge the sacrifices made by our fellow Australians with a whole of
College ANZAC Day Assembly. Our Prefects will also be representing the College at the Dawn Service at the
Cleveland Cenotaph on Wednesday, 25 April. I have always been impressed by the number of young people from
Ormiston College who attend the Dawn Service. Students are encouraged to attend in school uniform to support the
Prefects and to show the community how much Ormiston College appreciates the sacrifices of those who have gone
before us.
TERM ONE SPORT FINISHES ON A HIGH
The Redbacks concluded Term One as the number 1 ranked school in TAS for Trimester 1 sport and the TAS
swimming champions. The number 1 ranking was achieved through an incredibly consistent performance across the
board by all teams. In addition to the 4 premiership teams a further 13 teams finished either second or third. This was
backed up by an absolute dominant performance in the pool where OC claimed their fifth consecutive victory winning
14 out of 17 possible trophies. Congratulations to all Trimester 1 players, coaches and coordinators for these stellar
results.
TRIMESTER 2 SPORT COMMENCES
This weekend Trimester 2 Sport commences with a practice round against St. Columban's at home. Students are
reminded that as players they are expected to be in full and correct playing uniform and as spectators they should wear
Ormiston College approved sports gear or full school uniform. With the onset of colder weather during Term Two this
includes wearing College approved jumpers, jerseys or track suit tops. Such items can be purchased at the Uniform or
ROCC Shop and the opening times are published on the front page of the Newsletter.
HAVE YOU BOOKED YOUR CATS TICKETS
Rehearsals are in full swing for this year's musical "Cats" and the cast took advantage of the Easter break to participate
Cyber Safety
On Monday, 29 April, Susan McLean from CyberSafetySolutions will be visiting Ormiston College to deliver three
presentations on Cyber Safety to our students from Years 4 -12.
Susan McLean is Australia's foremost expert in the area of Cyber Safety for young people and was a member of the
minutes Australia about the consequences of ‘sexting' titled, ‘One Click from Disaster', which is now being used as a
valuable teaching resource in high schools. Susan was also featured on a recent story on the ABC show Catalyst,
which looked at the issue of internet gaming addiction and the science behind these games.
Music Notes
WELCOME BACK!
Welcome back everyone to another exciting term of Music here at OC. I trust that your Easter break was wonderful and
that everyone is all set for a very busy term ahead.
STAFFING CHANGES
As you will have seen from earlier newsletter articles, Miss Elise Hickey will be commencing work at the College next
week as our new Classroom Music teacher, replacing Mrs Megan Long. I know that you will join with me in making
Elise feel welcome at the College. As part of this new appointment, there are some Ensemble staffing changes:
Elise Hickey will become the Director of the Treble Clefs.
Megan Long will become the accompanist for Pochino Choir, working alongside their conductor, Madonna Forster. Mrs
Long will also be continuing as the accompanist for Chamber Singers. We thank Dr Ian Thomson for accompanying the
Pochino Choir in Term One.
ENSEMBLE REHEARSALS
With the start of the new term, our Ensembles will be recommencing rehearsals for the term and performances ahead.
Due to the College Musical, there will be some changes in our Ensemble rehearsal schedule. The most significant
changes are:
OC Chorus, Redback Chorus & Chamber Singers will not commence rehearsals until the start of Week 5. As a
significant proportion of the students involved in these groups (and staff) are directly involved in the musical, this
temporary pause will ensure the students can focus in on what is important over the next four weeks.
There will be no Senior School Ensemble rehearsals in Week 4. This includes Symphonic Band, Jazz Band, OCCO,
Symphony Strings, Brass Ensemble and Yardbirds.
There may be some additional changes to our regular rehearsal schedule and these will be communicated to families
via Ensemble Directors.
CATS VOCAL MASTERCLASS
As part of our final preparations for Cats, four of our principal cast members underwent a vocal masterclass with Old
Collegian and international singer, Mirusia. The insight and guidance Mirusia offered these students will be incredibly
valuable for the weeks ahead as they refine their performances for opening night. The show is shaping up to be one of
Page 8/15
Week 1 Term 2, 19 Apr 2013
the best ever at OC and if you have yet to secure your tickets, I would strongly urge you to do so as soon as possible to
avoid disappointment.
MUSIC TUITION EXAMS
In Week 6 of this term, the Semester 1 Music Tuition exams will take place for all students enrolled in the Music Tuition
program from Year 2 to Year 12. Prep piano students do not sit exams and our Year 1 piano students will be assessed
for the first time in Semester 2. Your child's Music Tutor will have established the expectations for the exam and what
the students will be required to do. This information is recorded in your child's Music Play diary. As parents, you can
play a very important role in preparing your child for the exam or any other musical performance. Sitting down together
at home once or twice a week and working through the exam requirements and even holding a "mock" exam at home
will ensure that your child will feel confident in the weeks ahead.
JAZZ BAND PERFORMANCE @ CHANNON WINERY
On Saturday, 18 May the members of Jazz Band will be off to Stanthorpe to perform at the Channon Winery. There will
be some spare seats available on the bus, should you wish to come on the road trip for the day and enjoy the great
hospitality of the Singing Lake Café and the music from our students. Please contact Danielle Logan via
music@ormistoncollege.com.au if you are interested in attending this event.
BIG STRING DAY 2013
Our annual Big String Day is back once again for 2013. This year's Big String Day will be held at Hillbrook Anglican
School. Further details regarding the event will be given to our String students in the Ensemble rehearsals next week
and the details of the final concert will appear in Week 3's Newsletter.
INTERMEDIATE MUSIC DAY
Congratulations to the members of Sonata Strings and Concert Band for their outstanding work at the Intermediate
Music Day on Monday. This day of rehearsals, workshops and team building is an important part of developing the
skills and abilities of these ensembles and its members. Thank you to the Senior School students, Old Collegians and
Music Tutors who ran tutorials for the students during the day. I would like to acknowledge the hard work of Mrs
Rowena James and Mr Braxton Neate in planning, organising and running this very productive day. I look forward to
hearing the fruits of their labour in the performances ahead this year.
ICT Services - Windows 8
The College provides all the software (including virus protection) for students using the laptop program. This software is
pre-loaded onto the laptop at the time it is allocated to your child.
Unfortunately, we have noticed some students recently, who have erased the College software and installed Windows
8 on their College laptops.
This presents a number of legal issues around copyright for the College and Parents. It is also not permitted under the
"Laptop Agreement".
It is also advisable that parents check their child's College assigned laptop and report any irregularities to the ICT
Helpdesk.
The ICT Helpdesk can be contacted by telephoning 3488 6790 or emailing icthelpdesk@ormistoncollege.com.au
(8.00am - 4.00pm) on normal school days.
From the Head of Junior School
It was wonderful to see our students returning from their holidays eager and refreshed with so many interesting stories
to tell.
I would like to take this opportunity to welcome some new students to our College - Luca de Abreu, Emma Franken,
Daniel Blake, Daniel Donnelly and Holly Seymour. We hope your association with Ormiston College will be a long and
rewarding one.
We are looking forward to a busy term with major academic events occurring such as NAPLAN and Reports. Please
assemble at the corner of Middle Street between Island and Fitzroy Street at 10.00am. The March will commence at
10.30am and will conclude across from the RSL Club. All students will need to wear full school uniform including their
formal hat. You should have received a note today to enable you to indicate your attendance at this special occasion.
Please return this note to your child's Class Teacher by Monday so we can organise appropriate supervision for this
event.
SCHOOL DENTAL VAN
The School Dental Van will be on campus next week. Students will receive notes shortly about this service.
We enjoyed a number of events at the end of last term which included our Easter Celebration. The Early Childhood
students enjoyed performing their Easter songs and poems to their families on the last Wednesday of Term One. The
children made their hats at school and they were incredibly colourful. Thanks must go to Miss Thomas, staff and
students for all of their efforts with this event.
The students from Years 6 and 7 were also involved in Readers Cup. The winning team this year was from 6SJ. This
team will now compete at the Regional Challenge which will be held at Wondall Heights School on 6 June at 11.30am.
A big thank you to Mrs Waller Brown and staff for the organisation of this event.
INSIGHTS
We look forward to a positive and rewarding Term Two and hope to see our families out and about at the many
activities that will occur this term.
Head of Junior School
Year 5 Camp
At Camp Lake Fire, Year Five faced many fun and exciting challenges. Some more difficult than others, of which
abseiling was at the top of the list. We enjoyed other activities such as canoeing, archery, raft building and fishing.
We really liked being part of a tribe. All tribes had the freedom of naming rights and creating a flag. We were impressed
when we saw the other tribe's fantastic flags. The four tribes were named Crocodillians, Yolo's, Ultimate Survivors and
The Rebels.
Other awesome moments at camp, definitely overruled the rest. Cooking our own food including roasting marshmallows
and sleeping in tents. As night fell, Tribal Council took place. Everyone had to vote on who was the best and fairest for
the day. The chosen boy and girl from each tribe were to compete in the ‘Ultimate Challenge' at the end of camp.
Year Five really enjoyed this camp. We definitely have a lot of memories that will be shared and remembered for years
to come.
SOCCER SUPPORT GROUP
An invitation to families of any student thinking of playing soccer this year from Years 7 - 12 (Junior School families also
welcome). Come along for our first meeting of the Soccer Support Group. We will revisit our Mission Statement, create
a Working Committee and hear our Coordinator's plans for the season. Volunteers have worked in 2012 to put us in a
sound financial position. The season starts in Term 3 so we are keen to be organised for a great start. We especially
welcome Year 7 players to the TAS competition this year. We said our farewells to Year 12 players and families in
2012. Now it is time to renew and meet some new families as well as greet those we know well.
See you on Monday, 22 April at 7.00pm in Room 1 (near Senior School drop off zone / Car park Dundas Street West.
Lights will be on ready and waiting).
Tuckshop News
Welcome back everyone. The Menu for 2013 can be printed from Parent Lounge on the Ormiston College Website.
Quite a lot of Junior School students are still using the old prices from last year. Whilst the Menu is quite varied, please
feel free to come up with suggestions at any time, and we will try to accommodate where possible. Also available are
Turkish Breads and Wraps which can be ordered. Please add 20 cents extra and also allow another 20 cents if toasting
is required. We have been making a Turkish Bead (toasted) with turkey, cream cheese, aioli, tomato and bacon for
$4.20. This has proved very popular with Senior School students. Another idea is a "kebab" which is a wrap (toasted)
with chicken, cheese, tomato, lettuce, BBQ and sweet chilli sauce, also $4.20. These are available to both Junior and
Senior students through the ordering system. All extra fillings, please add 20 cents.
