Redbacks Winning Edge
On the back of some great efforts in Cricket and Volleyball the Redbacks had the
better of St. Columban’s winning 12 and losing 8.
However OC suffered some severe collateral damage with St. Columban’s inflicting
massive defeats on our First XI and Firsts Tennis teams. We hope they rebound
with a vengeance tomorrow.
OC Volleyball won all 5 rubbers with the 10s flirting with defeat along the
way
Three easy wins for OC Cricket with the Year 10s scrambling a fourth win in
the last seconds of their clash
Year 8 and 9 Basketball continued their winning streak but the 2nds blew
their match with poor shooting
A miserable day for OC Tennis except for the Firsts new stunning outfits (see
photo) and the 2nds grabbing a nailbiter to retain top spot.
Tomorrow the Redbacks take on Canterbury in their last home round before the
Finals. Eight Redbacks teams are on top of their tables.
Congratulations
Aaron Barker Smith, Emily Bennett, James Cameron, James Copperthwaite, Kayla
Hoey, Rachel Hukins, Shayna Jack, Natasha Lay, Josh Mavin, Charlton Otene,
Keani Otene, Katelyn Sherrin and David Todd have been selected in the Met East
team which will compete at State later in the month.
The Redback Reporter Term 1 — Week 7/10
Firsts Basketball
Ormiston College v St Columban’s
The weekend saw a disappointing loss for the girls.
The match started at what appeared to be a slow pace,
the scoreboard kept ticking over and our zone defence
looked solid. Our shooting percentage was high but
we showed no enthusiasm to rebound or run fast
breaks. Elise was injured during the game suffering
from shin splints but she still won the tip off for us to
score. Chane, Kayla and Nicole came to the game
feeling ill while Danica was thinking about throwing up
after a knock to the mouth during the game. I think all
girls were a bit too panicky including myself and were
too worried about making mistakes rather than
performing our skills as a team. The tempo of the
game increased in areas, especially when the girls
started playing their game and not letting St
Columban’s get any offensive boards. Coming into the
fourth quarter defensive play was weak and we let St.
Columban’s get too many shots up. All girls should be
commended though, for being challenged mentally for
the first time in the season as it was a close match for
most of the game. Shout out to Mr McBride for trying
to keep us calm and content during the game,
reminding us to keep relaxed and play our game, not
theirs. Hopefully in the coming games we all commit
to our roles and enjoy ourselves more.
Tyeka Close (Captain)
Chane Geldenhuys was the outstanding player of the
day well supported by Tyeka and Emily Holzberger.
Mr McBride ( Coach)
Seconds Basketball
A close encounter was always going to be to case
when Ormiston played against St Columban’s, as both
teams were undefeated. Ormiston was on fire in the
first quarter running away with a comfortable lead.
The girls were told there was no way St Columban’s
would give up and to keep up their defensive intensity,
which they did brilliantly. The next three quarters
became a nail biter as St Columban’s hit back with a
couple of intercepts and easy layups. In the final few
minutes of the game St Columban’s took the lead by a
point, Ormiston then equalled their score and
unfortunately the final result was a one point loss to St
Columban’s 15 – 14. All the girls played an exceptional
game, with Sophie top scoring and Jessie & Kirsty
both scoring 4 points each. The girls are determined to
win the final two games of the season to get them back
into premiership contention.
Judy Zemek (Coach)
Year 10 Basketball
We all knew coming up against St Columban’s was
going to be our biggest physical and mental
challenge yet. We travelled to St Columban’s with
determination and our game faces on! This match
was certainly a physical affair! In a 43-15 defeat, the
only thing that was down was the score, our spirits
and heads were held high and this defeat was taken
as a few important lessons to be learnt and put into
our future games. Every single person that took to
the court contributed in one way or another and did
not let the team down. With a modified strategy in
the 4 th quarter, OC was able to overcome the
pressure of a full court press and outscore their
opponents. This match was COLS most competitive
to date and that was witnessed by their rendition of
their war cry at the end of the match. Mikayla Price
had another outstanding game, considering that she
was double marked throughout the match. Laura
Holzberger played wonderfully in defence using her
speed to harass the COLS runners and Ashleigh
Peters stood firm (and took some big hits) in defence
to frustrate the offensive raids. One thing that we did
really well, was never giving in. Congratulations girls,
for all the effort and your fantastic attitude towards
training and games.
Keep it up!
The Redback Reporter Term 1 — Week 7/10
Year 9 Basketball
Ormiston College v St Columban’s
On Saturday, the Year 9 basketball girls took to the
court hoping to come away with a win against the arch
rivals, St Columban’s. We got off to a shaky start,
allowing Columban’s to score the first basket. After
quarter time pep talk from the coach, we were revved
up and raring to put in a better effort and we started to
get points on the board. Our communication on the
court and from the bench lacked the usual
encouragement making it difficult to get momentum.
With the final score being 28–12 in our favour, we were
all stoked to come away with the win against St
Columban’s who were also undefeated coming into
this game. In the end, our defense was the key to
winning this game – our defensive pressure saw St
Columban’s being forced to travel with the ball or
losing control of the ball. Unfortunately, our shooting
percentage was well down on recent efforts, so we
were not able to capitalize on this possession like we
have in previous TAS games. Jade Dunsmuir was
again dominant under the basket. Congrats to player of
the match, Pia Aston who had a strong game. Great
game girls, and we look forward to our home game this
weekend.
Ellaine Grondin (Captain)
Year 8 Basketball
Ormiston College v St Columban’s
Last week, the Year 8 girls basketball team played
against St Columbians with a final score of 54 to 23,
leaving us undefeated. The whole team are putting all
their hard work from training into the game and
hopefully we will present the same or more amount of
effort into this weeks game against Canterbury. Our
top three scorers for the day were both Natalie and
Lana with 4 baskets, and myself with 16 baskets.
Although the season is nearly over, the team is looking
forward to two games before the finals.
Year 10 Volleyball
Ormiston College v St Columban’s
The Year 10 Volleyball boys were up for a hard match
against St Columban’s at Caboolture as we were
missing two of our key players. The first set was
tough and we went down 25-19. In the second set we
were looking to improve on our efforts and we set out
to win. The set reached St Columban’s 24 to
Ormiston 22, and we used our last timeout. We
managed to regain our strengths and clawed back to
level the score 25-25. With great blocking by Connor
Spence up at the net, St Columban’s were not able to
get many spikes over, and we managed to win the
second set 31-29. In the third set we were looking not
to go down. We came out strong, taking an early
lead with lots of good spiking by Connor Spence and
Tristan Broodryk. We managed to take out the set 25-
17, winning the match. Player of the match goes to
Connor Spence.
Jack Frampton (Captain)
Year 9 Volleyball
Ormiston College v St Columban’s
Friday’s match was set to be a thriller as two of the
top teams battled head to head for the lead. St
Columban’s was a tough opponent and the Redbacks
knew that this game was vital to the retention of the
premiership. St Columban’s opened the match with
the serve, but in a brilliant display of blocking and
spiking, OC were able to convincingly take the first
set 25-13. The second set was tense though, as St
Columban’s battled hard the set, showing off some
of the best gameplay both teams can muster. Spikes
here and there, fatal digs and lethal serves ended up
with OC once again taking the long set 25-17. The
pressure relieved, OC gave St Columban’s some
grace, slacking a bit to allow the crippled opposition
to take the final set 25-20. Tomorrow’s match against
Canterbury will be a rematch of last year’s final.
Quangvy Ho (Captain)
Year 8 Volleyball
Ormiston College v St Columban’s
We had another great win, this time against St
Columban’s winning all three sets. OC got off to a
slow start allowing St Columban’s to get a 5 point
lead in the first set. Then the team just pulled
themselves together and winning the set 25 - 17. We
went a lot better in the second set keeping them on
single digits and we started to serve better and more
consistent using our three shot plays more, 25-8. In
the third set we were using our three shot plays more
consistently and we kept them on single digits again
25-9. We played much, much better in the last two
sets and we were proud of ourselves. Thanks to all
the parents who drove the OC team out to the game
and also thanks to Mr Griggs for coaching us.
The Redback Reporter Term 1 — Week 7/10
First s Cricket
Ormiston College v St Columban’s
The First boys made the long trip out to St Columban’s
last Saturday, winning the toss, OC chose to bowl.
Unfortunately, we had a poor start with the new ball,
which resulted in two wicketless sessions. It wasn’t
until after the second drinks that OC got their first
breakthrough, but after that the wickets began to
crumble with Mitch McDermott and Mitch Carrigan
bowling well. In the end, St Columban’s were
dismissed for 268. The run chase started poorly, losing
an early wicket, placing OC on the back foot. Despite
good efforts with the bat by Liam Ibbott and Dylan
Grey, the team scored 63. This week the boys will have
to bounce back for a chance in the finals.
Mitchell Pratt (Captain)
Year 10 Cricket
Ormiston College v St Columban’s
OC travelled to St Columban’s to play what was to be
the second game we had played this season due to
forfeits and byes. After losing the toss a confident
opposition sent us into bat. We batted strongly and
consistently, with a good partnership of 64 runs from
Jayden Cross and Sam Logan forming the basis of our
total. However, our bottom order collapsed, leaving a
total of 107 runs for us to defend. St Columban’s took
to the field, but good bowling from Zac Waller-Brown,
Duncan Fallon, Josh Watkins and Sam Logan kept St
Columban’s 104 runs in a nail-biting finish. Man of the
Match: Sam Logan for good batting and bowling.
Sam Logan (Captain)
Year 9 Cricket
Ormiston College v St Columban’s
With a wet weekend washout last week the Year 9’s
were still top of the table by four points. Playing St
Columban’s looked like an easy victory and it turned
out so by winning by 101 runs. The pitch was basically
dirt and was a bowler’s paradise however, Kevin Penny
(man of the match) scored an easy 76 runs
unfortunately getting out. Other batters chipped in with
a good partnership between Kevin and Calvin of over
50 runs. Defending a huge total of 137 was easy with
bowling St Columban’s out for 36 with 13 overs to go.
Kevin was pick of the bowlers claiming 2 wickets, while
John Osborne contributed with 2 wickets, and was on
a hat-trick but missed out as the last wicket was taken
in the next over.
Firsts Tennis
Ormiston College v St Columban’s
The Firsts team played knowing full well that the
competition would be tough the girls gave it their all. It
was unfortunate we were unable to come away with a
win; however the score did not at all reflect the games
played. The score was 0 sets to 6, 16 games to 36 St
Columbians favour. Bad luck girls, but don’t give up
now. So give it your all tomorrow and next week and
hopefully we will meet this team again in the final.
After all we looked great anyway.
Emma Cecchin (Captain)
Second Tennis
Ormiston College v St Columban’s
The Seconds Girls are still undefeated as we came out
victorious with a nail-biting score of 28 games to 25,
and 3 sets to 3. We had a bumpy start to the day,
losing the first doubles match. Also, despite her efforts,
Isabel lost her singles match, 6-2. However, the
closeness of this match is not reflected in the overall
score as every game ended in deuce. Later on, the
results improved as Ellen won her singles match with
an excellent score of 6-2. Olivia also did the team
proud by winning both her singles and her doubles
match with Carly. After these consistent positive
results each week, we should hopefully remain in our
top spot on the ladder. Our next match is at home, so
any support would be greatly appreciated.
Isabel Lopez-Roldan ( Captain)
Year 10 Tennis
Ormiston College v St Columban’s
The Year 10 team away but came away with a loss.
However, we played well and have continued to
improve every match, which was evident on Saturday.
Sarah Prince, our MVP, won a game in her singles and
2 games in her doubles with her partner, Amelia Diaz.
We look forward to a continuing improvement in our
future games.
Year 9 Tennis
Ormiston College v St Columban’s
The Year 9 games ran behind schedule, but Kirsty
got on the court but lost her game. Erin played well
but lost 3-6. Kirsty and Erin played very well
together, winning their doubles 6-2. Connie played
her singles winning 6-4 in a very tight match. Connie
Beacham is named most valuable player for her
outstanding efforts in the very hot and humid
conditions. The overall score was 4 sets to 2, 30
games to 15 in St Columban’s favour.
Kirsty Tait ( Captain)
Year 8 Tennis
Ormiston College v St Columban’s
The long drive to Caboolture proved almost too
much for the Year 8 tennis girls this round with the
teams suffering a significant loss to the stronger St
Columban’s team. On a terribly hot day, the team
had to sit around for some time before courts were
ready to play on and this didn’t help the situation.
Despite going down 6–0 and winning only 8 games
in total for the day, the girls demonstrated some
significant improvements in their skills and
knowledge of the game. The additional training
sessions are clearly paying off and the players and
parents should be commended for their commitment
to this important part of the program.
MVP: Zoe Brechbuhler for being part of 5 out of 8
games won on the day.
Term 1 — Week 7/10
The weather held off to allow Round 5 of the JTAS season to be played. In a mixed bag of results, Ormiston won
half of the ten games contested. Mrs Cullen’s Year 5 side won by 2 runs in a thrilling game. Sam Meaney played a
memorable match for the 7 Red side scoring 19 runs with the willow and making two stumpings as wicketkeeper.
Despite passing St John’s total after losing only one wicket, the 7 Blue side batted on and Tom Waller-Brown was
the pick of the batsman scoring an unbeaten 35.
Despite losing three players at the eleventh-hour to illness, borrowing one player from St Paul’s and securing the
services of star recruit, 9 year old Chris Dempskey, the 7 Blue softball side won 21-15. The 6 Blue and Year 5 sides
played each other in a close game with the 6 Blues winning by one run.
This Saturday is the penultimate round of the cricket season. Fingers crossed for more fine weather.
