03 May 2013
From the D.A's Office
Promising Redback Start
The Redbacks won 20 and lost 7 against Redeemer although OC only really dominated in Rugby.
HIGHLIGHTS
OC Hockey won 3, lost one and unexpectedly drew the 9s.
OC Tennis won 4 out of 6 rubbers with the Seconds dominating.
It was a picnic for OC Rugby with their 6 teams scoring almost 400 points and only 20 against. The First XV scored a
record 16 tries in an absolute cakewalk.
OC Netball won 7 out of 11 with the 9s, 10s and Thirds in good early season form.
Year 7 teams had a great undefeated round while the Year 8s could only manage one win out of 5 matches.
Tomorrow is crunch time against JPC at home with the two TAS Titans slugging it out for Term 2 supremacy. We have
not hosted JPC in Term 2 for many years and are hoping for a huge turnout of Redback supporters. Last year the
Redbacks won 3 out of 5 Rugby and 3 out of 4 Hockey matches; three Netball wins and no wins for OC Tennis.
Team Reports
NETBALL
Firsts
Saturday's match saw the Firsts up against a very experienced Redeemer College side. The girls were able to match
their game speed throughout the game; however, they struggled to get the ball consistently down the court and
unfortunately went down 38-23. Demonstrating her elite skills and athleticism, Katelyn Savage was consistent in her
game play, causing a number of turnovers, with the help of defensive combination; Olivia Wyles and Nicola Eden.
Despite being unable to come away with the win, the girls remain enthusiastic for the remainder of the season.
Izzy Guyomar (Captain)
Seconds
The girls had a close game against Redeemer; we came away with a disappointing loss. We had a great start, keeping
the goal margin minimal with strong attack in mid-court and consistent shooting from Jade and Amy. In the third quarter,
the girls managed to secure a few turnovers, leaving us 3 points behind the opposition, but unfortunately, in the last
quarter, the girls let the game slip away. Overall, it was a competitive and nail-biting game, and it was great to see the
girls not give up throughout the entire match. Special mention to Amy Harper for filling in, as well as playing shooter for
the entire game. MVP: Jade Tansley, who shot very well under pressure and Ash Fraser for her determination in
defence. It was a great game girls; well done! Bring on JPC!
Charlotte Sawyer (Captain)
Thirds
Ormiston College 30 v Redeemer 7
The Thirds Netball girls took to the court all fired up for their first game of the season against Redeemer last weekend.
Their energy, enthusiasm and passion reflected the score with the Mighty Thirds coming away with a 23 point win. The
game showcased the girls' teamwork and their never-give-up attitude, which allowed them to gain focus and get the ball
down the court fluidly. It was not a matter of one person standing out from the rest with our shooters, defenders and
centre court warriors all battling it out to secure the team's convincing win. The girls should be commended on their
dedication and hard work in training and the game. MVP for the match was Alyssa Belford for her incredible work as WD.
All girls are to be congratulated on their efforts and support for next week's game against JPC would be greatly
appreciated.
Melissa Laker (Captain)
Year 10B
The 10B girls secured their first win for the season in the game against Redeemer last weekend. Despite being down by
a few points in the first quarter, the team pulled together to defeat Redeemer with a 19-12 victory. With strong defence
from both Keely Lynch and Olivia Howe, the team was able to continuously get the ball to the shooting circle, where
Term 2 - Week 3
Caitlin Middleton-Horton barely missed a shot. Special thanks to Emily Erbacher for filling in for us this week when we
had a few players not able to come. Overall it was a good game and we are excited to see what the season will bring.
Good job girls!
Florence Guyomar (Captain)
Year 9A
OC 56 d Redeemer 14
The Year 9 girls played Redeemer on the weekend, unsure of how we were going to go as they have just been promoted
to the Blue Division. We started very strongly, winning the 1st quarter by 13 to 3. The transition from defence to attack
was very good and our passing was strong. We extended our lead to 25 to 6 at half time. Our coach was able to
interchange players from the bench very seamlessly and by three quarter time the score was 42 to 11. During the last
change, Kerrie gave us some team goals to try to achieve. The final score was 56 to 14. It was a solid team effort and we
hope to keep improving our skills each week, particularly our triangles and the strength and speed of our passes.
Tomorrow we play JPC in an important game, and will have to be on top of our game to come out winners.
Lana Ibbott (Captain)
Year 9B
All girls played exceptionally well for their first game of the season, with a final score of 39-7 in OC's favour. Player of the
match goes to Vanessa for her great defending. Big thanks to our coach Jess for her training and encouragement. We
look forward to next week's match against JPC.
Molly Foort (Captain)
Year 8B
The team was a player down when we played Redeemer last weekend; the final score 28-5 to Redeemer. Ormiston
showed much improvement, both in playing as a team and in defence. Special mention should be given to Megan
Erbacher (Goal Keeper) as our most improved player showing off her new defensive skills. MVP was Jenna Hurley
(Centre) who played all four quarters in an outside, very sunny game, and an extremely physically demanding job; well
done!
Samantha Wong (Coach)
TENNIS
Firsts
On Saturday the Boys Tennis First IV took on newly promoted Redeemer. Our opposition were certainly fired up for the
clash and started impressively with a powerful service display in the first doubles. However, Nick Thompson and Will
Maher weathered the early storm and dispatched their opponents 6-1 with a clinical display of controlled tennis. Nick's
singles match followed the same pattern winning 6-1 whilst Will never let his opponent into the match also winning 6-1.
Our second doubles pair, QV Ho and Andrew Fowler, raced out of the blocks winning the first five games. Redeemer
Page 3/9 SPORTS INFORMATION LINE 3821 8986
Term 2 - Week 3
rallied to get a single game but QV and Andrew were too strong winning 6-1. QV maintained the momentum brushing
past his opponent 6-0. In the final match of the round Andrew went down 6-2. At the end of the day OC were worthy
victors 5-32 to 1-10. MVP: QV Ho for another dominant performance.
Nick Thompson (Captain)
Seconds
OC def Redeemer, 6-36 to 0-6
A new look OC Seconds team took to the court with the return of regulars Royce "The Rock" Adcock and Jackson "The
Troll" Morley, as well as this year's new addition Kevin Penney. OC was off to a flying start as we took the first doubles
match 6-0, whilst Royce Adcock dominated his opponent in the no. 3 singles, allowing him just two points in the whole
match as he won 6-0. This set the pattern of the day for OC, as Redeemer offered little resistance across the board as
OC won all sets. It was a terrific all round performance from the boys however we should not be lulled into a false sense
of security as we play the ever-powerful JPC boys this Saturday.
Liam Ibbott (Captain)
Year 10
The boys were looking forward to the confrontation however the match was unfortunately won by Redeemer five sets to
one. Although the game was lost, the boys played well against their opposition. Dylan Pearse should be congratulated for
his exceptional 6-2 win as the second seed. All members of the team are looking forward to redeeming themselves
against JPC next week.
Jarrod Allen (Captain)
Year 9
The boys played well again this week, despite playing with a different Seed 3 and 4 players than last week. This shows
that the team is full of skill and will be a force for the weeks to come. The boys ended up winning 4 sets to 2 and 31
games to 23. The MVP for this round would have to go to Daniel Hornibrook for a tremendous win in both his singles and
doubles. The boys are looking forward to continuing this winning streak next week against JPC.
Ryan Johnston (Captain)
Year 8
We had a rough start to the season losing 2 sets to 4 and losing 20 to 33 games. The player of the match was Layton
Mathews as he was the only one to win both his matches. Everyone in both teams showed great sportsmanship and we
hope to get back on our feet and win our next game.
Layton Mathews (Captain)
Year 7
The day started out well with Mitchell Dixon and Aiden Kenway winning 6-0 against Redeemer. Jack Saunders also
played well despite his 0-6 loss. Lamkha Ho lost a hard fought game 6-7 which saw the first tie breaker of the Year 7 OC
season. Mitchell Dixon won 6-1 in an easy match. Jack Saunders and Lamkha Ho lost 3-6 in their doubles and Aiden
Kenway smashed the opponent with a 6-0 win. The team played well with the overall score being 4 sets 27 games to 2
sets 20 games. Aiden Kenway was the MVP of the round with his powerful serve and all round power shots.
Mitchell Dixon (Captain)
RUGBY
First XV
Ormiston 102 defeated Redeemer 0
Ormiston went into the first round of the TAS season confident after a win the previous week against the reigning
premiers. Travelling to newly promoted Redeemer proved to be somewhat of an unknown but this did not deter the boys
who were supremely confident of racking up a big score. A tardy warm-up was not the best start to the day but once that
whistle went the boys switched on and got straight into their work. From the very first minute it became clear that
Redeemer was not going to put up much of a fight with Ormiston's ball runners dominating with every carry. Try after try
followed as Ormiston went into the break with a halftime lead of 54-0. Lawson Salmon was the star of the first half
scoring 3 tries and looking increasingly ominous. The second half continued the trend with Ormiston running in another 8
tries with Justin Ormandy having a field day with the weak opposition defence. In the end it was a commanding
performance and one the boys should be really proud of. The final score of 102-0 is most certainly a record and one that
may not be beaten for a very long time. Next up is JPC, our fiercest rivals, in a match that will more than likely secure a
grand final spot. Best Players: Lawson Salmon, Will May, Justin Ormandy, Bronson Wolf
Mr Peterman (Coach)
Seconds
Ormiston 65 defeated Redeemer 5
Ormiston faced off against Redeemer full of confidence after convincingly dispatching the 2012 premiers St Columban's
the previous week. From the outset it was clear that Ormiston had too much skill and flair for their opposition, who
unfortunately resorted to some illegal tactics in an attempt to spoil the game. The forwards worked extremely well
together with clear communication evident throughout the game. This allowed time and space for the backs where Myles
Pini was able to grab a pair of tries. Calum Marr (also two tries) was the standout performer of the day with his damaging
running leaving a few Redeemer ‘Big Boys' flat on the floor. With JPC up next the boys know that a far greater challenge
lies ahead, but they are well equipped heading into this contest. Best Players: Calum Marr, Myles Pini, Jack Frampton,
Seb Frank, Tom Hughes.
Mr Dowdell (Coach)
Year 10
OC - 72 defeated Redeemer - 0
The score line reflects the dominance of the team. However it must be remembered that Redeemer were only playing
Page 5/9 SPORTS INFORMATION LINE 3821 8986
Term 2 - Week 3
with 13 players and this dropped to 10 at one stage.
Playing against a depleted team can sometimes affect your structures and this was certainly the case and in some cases
we were guilty of all wanting the ball. The forwards were dominant in the first half which allowed clean ball to the backs.
With time to play the pairing of Aiden and Tristan found space and had some great line breaks. With the introduction of
James into the forward pack in the second half our go forward ball continued. Twelve tries to zero was a great result with
Michael, Aiden and Ed our double try scorers. JPC this weekend will pose a different game and we must be prepared.
Great start to the season though.
Mike King (Coach)
Year 9
Ormiston 73 defeated Redeemer 0
The boys were switched on right from the word go for the first game of the Rugby season. The game started on a high
with Conal Grewar scoring the first try within minutes of the opening kick. The boys showed great teamwork as we had a
good lead throughout the whole match and we still stuck to our game plan. Some great tackles were made by Gabriel
Soner and Brandon Edlin as they let nothing through the line all game. In the end it was a great team effort and looking
forward to JPC next week. Try of the game was awarded to Ben Olds for his magnificent breakaway try from kick off.
Tries: Sherrin (3), Payne (2), Olds, Grewar, Smith, Metcalfe, Edlin, Soner. Conversions: Sherrin (6), Frampton (3).
Zane Stock (Captain)
Year 8
Ormiston College 39 - Redeemer Lutheran College 10
Tries: Jack Robinson (2), Luke Grosvenor, Julian Bayliss, Ryan Jackson, Tyler Andrews, Fraser Todd. Conversions:
Ryan Jackson (2) MVP: Tanner Elliott
After a battering in the trial game against St Columban's, the Year 8 boys were keen to make amends against Redeemer
College this week. However, the game did not start as planned with the Redeemer backs running in a try in the first 5
minutes. The boys regrouped and got back into the game with a try in the corner by Luke Grosvenor and barraging run
resulting in a try by Julian Bayliss. We managed to hold the Redeemer boys out for the rest of the half but there was still
room for improvement in defence. The half-time discussion focused on getting back to basics in the rucks by driving over
the ball and maintaining possession. Julian Bayliss put his hand up on many occasions to run the ball and he provided
great momentum for the team in the second half. Our tackling improved but the opposition defence weakened and they
let in some excellent running tries scored by Jack Robinson (2), Ryan Jackson and Fraser Todd. However, the try of the
match has to go to Tyler Andrews who took the ball on the halfway line and ran through the entire Redeemer team to
score in the corner. The final score was OC 39 - Redeemer 10 with Redeemer scoring a consolation try late in the game.
Well done boys but next week's game against JPC will be a much bigger challenge.
Term 2 - Week 3
Year 7
Ormiston 35 defeated Redeemer 5
The Year 7 rugby team started their season off with a convincing win against Redeemer. The score line could have been
a lot higher with four dubious calls resulting in certain tries being called back. After a slow start, our forwards began to
work hard in the ruck, winning a number of turn overs and showing signs of dominance. Our backline was well led by our
halves and created problems for Redeemer whenever the ball was put through the hands. With JPC coming up this
weekend, we will get a better indication of how we are faring. MVP goes to Brock Kurz for his barnstorming runs and hat
trick closely followed by Ben Stone. Tries - Brock Kurz (3), Jamie Robinson (1) and Thomas Holzberger (1). Conversions
- Jamie Robinson (5/5)
Brent Malcolm (Coach)
HOCKEY
Firsts
The First Hockey Team has started the season positively with a convincing win of 5-0 against Redeemer last weekend.
The girls started the game strong with aggressive attack. Putting practice into play, the girls used the lack of defence to
their advantage with powerful passing up the field. Impressive attack from Ingrid Williams, Alice Colquhoun and Tianna
Andreatidis up the wings ensured that the game remained in our favour. Lauren Kritzinger supported these great plays by
minimising any attacking opportunities that Redeemer possessed. By half time the girls were confident for a win, however
recognised that with the number of opportunities they had on goal, the score margin should have been a lot higher. Goal
scorers for the game included Ingrid Williams (2), Annie Smith (1), Lauren Kritzinger (1) and Olivia Donohue (1). Most
Valuable Player was awarded to Jaime Rodda for outstanding attack that led the team throughout the game. Jaime
worked well throughout the match with strong passes and skills. The girls are extremely pleased with this win and are
looking forward to Saturday's game which will be one of our tougher matches this season against JPC.
Jessie Grewar (Captain)
Seconds
The Seconds Hockey girls played Redeemer and came away with a convincing win. With a great start to the game
scoring 5 points before half time, the girls were in for a good game. With great work from the forwards they scored
another 2 points in the second half coming away with an overall win of 7 points to nil. Standouts in the game were Taylor
Wright, Brittney Campbell-Akers and Georgia Roehrig, each playing a fantastic game to help come away with such a
convincing win. If the girls keep up the good work the season is looking promising.
Isabella Watt (Captain)
Year 9
The Year 9 Hockey girls were up against Redeemer in the first game of the season where they were playing for points.
The girls went out on the field determined to win. The whole team gave it their all and didn't give up however Redeemer
weren't backing down with the score ending in zero all. Special mention must go to Yasmin and Julia who showed the
other team who was boss and especially to Mariah who was running and going for the ball non-stop. The girls did a great
job and cannot wait for next Saturday.
Tess Photinos (Captain)
Year 8
The Girl's Hockey team had a tough game against Redeemer, losing 0-1. It was nil-all until the second half, when
Redeemer scored in the last 5 minutes. Paige Edwards earned Player of the Match because of her awesome job as
Goalie. Mara Johansson played very well in Centre Half and had a great game as well. Redeemer was a very competitive
team and had some very skilled players. We did very well as a team and can't wait till next weekend.
Mt Gravatt, which are the three other district teams that make up the Met East region.
There were 88 boys in all at the Carnival and after all the round robin games they selected 36 boys to play in a final
playoff game called the Possible's vs. Probable's. Max, Jack and Thomas made it into this final playoff. Jack and Max
gained selection in the final 22 to represent Met East at the State trials which are from June 8-12. Congratulations to all
JTAS NETBALL AND RUGBY
The first round of the JTAS Netball and Rugby seasons was played on Saturday, 27 April. After the weather affected the
Term 1 sporting program, the sunshine was embraced by the students and coaches.
Many of the girls were playing for the first time and the fun of putting on a bib, playing in different positions, scoring goals
and learning many rules on the go was really exciting. A number of games were closely fought in the Netball with eight of
the nine games being decided by four or less goals.
Term 2 - Week 3
In the Rugby the coaches remarked on the enthusiasm and effort displayed by the boys. Improvements required in
tackling, passing and catching are not uncommon however; it was the boys encouragement for each other which was a
highlight.
Next week the Rugby boys play all games away before all Rugby teams play at home in Rounds 3 and 4. If any Rugby
families take some good action photographs, please email them to j.pincott@ormistoncollege.com.au.
