From the Headmaster
Some time ago the College forecast the construction of brand new
classroom facilities to enable our Year 7 students to be
accommodated on the Senior School campus. Before our semester
ends in just a few short weeks we are likely to see the first signs of
imminent construction, as the builders occupy the College’s
southern courtyard and prepare for the work which will begin in
earnest during the semester break.
The project involves five classrooms and newly landscaped
surrounds, providing both learning and play spaces for our younger
secondary students. Throughout the second semester we will all
watch with some degree of excitement as the new development
and another milestone in the evolution of the College’s campus and
operation gathers momentum.
Year 7 classroom location/plan
Our current Year 5 students are the Year 7s of 2014 and the first
Year 7 group to become part of secondary schooling at Ormiston
College, one year prior to this occurrence state-wide. As we plan
for the transition on campus, the classrooms and physical resource
requirements form only part of the picture.
(continued on page 2)
ABSENTEE/LATE LINE
Please telephone 3821 8903 and leave a detailed message if your child is going to be absent or late for
school. If you experience difficulties with leaving a message on the Absentee/Late Line, please telephone
3821 8999 after 8.00am and leave your message with the Switch Board Operator. Thank you.
As previously communicated, during the changeover period for Year 7, the College will also ensure
students do not miss out on opportunities for Junior School leadership and the important rites of passage
that events such as the Canberra Trip and Junior School graduation have become.
Additionally, the curriculum and its implementation are up for review. While the College will respect the
requirements of the Australian Curriculum, our program of learning for Year 7 will be age appropriate,
likely to involve fewer teachers than a traditional secondary environment, and certain to reflect the College
emphasis on literacy and numeracy learning, our focus on technology and the Dimensions of Learning
Framework.
We are also advancing our thinking and discussions in relation to staffing structure. We are mindful that
we will cater for slightly younger students and increased numbers and are ever-committed to providing
the best possible service in terms of learning, discipline and welfare and a daily school experience that
students enjoy.
Staffing levels will be increased. By slightly refining our organisational structure and ensuring the right
people are positioned to focus their attention on students, I am confident we can provide students with the
care and support they deserve, taking the opportunities that this change presents to further improve on
the standards Ormiston College is known for.
While Year 7s of 2014 have the honour of being the first to begin secondary schooling at that level, it is our
current Year 6 students who have the honour of first occupying the new buildings as they enter Year 7 in
2013. However, apart from the geography of the move, these students will remain in all ways members of
the Ormiston College Junior School throughout next year.
All parents should expect that the building program ahead may cause some temporary inconvenience as
construction teams access a central part of the campus from Dundas Street. However, please be assured
that the College and our builders will do all we can to ensure we minimise any variation to our usual
routine.
Following completion of the Year 7 classrooms, construction of the planned Administration block will
begin, within the same vicinity, with completion due in the second half of 2013. We will continue to
communicate with families in regard to all aspects of these exciting developments at the College.
Although clearly we are about to engage in an active period of building, planning and evolving, the end
results should see our efforts and our patience well rewarded.
An Olympian at OC!
Congratulations to James Connor, Year 11
for his selection in the Australian Olympic
Diving Team for the 10m Platform event.
There are only 2 male 10m Platform diving
places available for Australian divers, so this
is a fantastic achievement and a reflection of
James’s hard work, dedication and talent.
YEAR 10 LAPTOP RECALL
At the end of this Term all Year 10 students are
required to return their laptops. The recall of
laptops is done approximately every 12 to 18
months for each cohort. Laptops are recalled to
allow for the installation of new software and the
updating of the standard operating environment.
In addition, electrical checks of the laptop and
charger are conducted and general repairs are
made where necessary.
When students return their laptop it is very
important that the students return the laptop itself
together with the bag and the charger and the
associated power cord.
More information will be provided to the students
toward the end of the Term. Please note that
students will be required to return their laptop on
Thursday, 21 June.
QCST PRACTICE TESTS FOR YEAR 11 AND 12
On Tuesday and Wednesday 19 and 20 June, our
Year 11 and 12 students will sit a two-day Practice
Queensland Core Skills Test (QCST). These two
days are an important part of preparing our Senior
students for the QCST and attendance on both
these days is expected.
The Queensland Core Skills Test is administered to
all O.P. eligible Year 12 students across
Queensland as a means of gaining a measure of
relative performance. The Qld Curriculum offers a
vast array of Senior Subjects and as such,
Queensland students do not all study the same
combination of subjects. Consequently the QCST
does not examine specific content but tests
students’ abilities to think, evaluate, analyse, make
decisions, link information, solve problems, come
to conclusions, compare, and contrast and so on.
Ormiston College has a program that prepares our
students to tackle the QCST with confidence. While
the skills required for the QCST are garnered over
12 years of education, our program for Year 11 and
12 focuses on making our students familiar with
the format of the tests and equipped with a range
of strategies to employ when answering questions.
An outside agency is engaged to mark the practice
tests and the feedback gained is used to devise a
program that acknowledges the strengths of a
cohort and considers strategies that address areas
that require improvement.
IMMUNISATION
On Monday, 4 June immunisations will occur for
the Year 8 and Year 10 students who nominated
for the program in mid-February.
Vaccinations for Year 10 students will include
Diphtheria, Tetanus and Whooping Cough. Year 8
students will be vaccinated for Chickenpox.
Further to this, the HPV (Cervical Cancer) Vaccine
will be available to Year 8 girls.
TAS CROSS COUNTRY
The Redback Cross Country team performed well
last week finishing in third place at the TAS Cross
Country. Well done to the students who trained
hard during the season and took advantage of the
morning training sessions. Thanks go to coaches
Mr Tsukui and Mr Jarrett along with Manager Mrs
Middleton for their efforts during the season.
A TASTE OF UNIVERSITY
LANGUAGE STUDY
Over the last few weeks, Year 12 students who are
studying a language other than English
participated in “A Taste of University Japanese”
and “A Taste of University German”. Below are
reports from two of these students:
JAPANESE
Last Friday four Year 12 Japanese
students travelled to the St Lucia
campus of the University of
Queensland for “A Taste of
University Japanese”. After a walk
around campus, a seminar was
presented by some of the lecturers of
Japanese language and culture as well as some of
the university students studying Japanese. The
participants from many different schools across
Brisbane were then divided into three groups to
experience different activities including a trivia
competition, conversations with some of the
university’s exchange students and a sentence
making game. Following the excursion, we now
have a clear idea of how we can continue to study
Japanese in future years. The day also helped us
to improve our speaking skills.
GERMAN
With the end of the year drawing
closer, the opportunity to travel
to the University of Queensland
for “A Taste of University
German” was something I did
not want to miss. After learning
German for six years, I thought it would be a
shame not to continue studying it. At “A Taste of
University German” we were told about the
different electives on offer and the opportunities
that would be available to us if we studied German
at university level. The lecturers were most helpful
and made the atmosphere comfortable and
relaxed. I recommend all future Year 12 German
students to participate in this excursion as it is a
great experience.
storybooks to the children in German, including
The Hungry Caterpillar. Mrs Pride, who was born
in Slovakia, also read and sang to the children in
Slovak, as well as teaching the children to count in
Slovak, Spanish, French and Hungarian. The
children also enjoyed dancing to some Slovak
songs.
SHARING LANGUAGE
LEARNING
Last week, LOTE teachers and students were
involved in Under 8’s Week at the Early Learning
Centre. The theme was Language - actively
connecting children to their world, and LOTE
teachers and students visited the Early Learning
Centre to share their language and learning with
the children.
Mrs Tomoko Carson, Japanese Teacher, sang
songs such as Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star and
Head, Shoulders, Knees and Toes in Japanese with
the children, and read some Japanese storybooks
to them. Mrs Carson was very impressed with how
quickly the children picked up the Japanese words.
Mrs Ingrid Pride, German Teacher, also visited a
number of times, both on her own and with some
of her classes. German students from 7GM taught
the children some greetings and how to count in
German, as well as singing a numbers song with
them. Year 12 German students read some
The LOTE students and teachers all enjoyed the
opportunity to interact and share their language
knowledge with the Early Learning Centre children.
Date Change
Due to a number of Music Extension students
being unwell, the first Extension Recital for 2012
has been postponed. It will now take place on
Thursday, 7 June starting at 7.00pm in the Lingo
Lin Theatre. I hope all members of the OC
community will still be able to come along and
support these incredibly talented students as they
complete their first piece of performance
assessment for this subject. Dress for this event is
Big, Bold & Brassy
Congratulations to all of the students who
performed in last Friday night’s concert,
particularly to the members of the Recorder
Ensemble and Intermediate Jazz Band who made
their first public performance at an OC Music
concert. Thank you to the Music Support Group for
their work in the canteen throughout the evening. I
would also like to acknowledge the hard work and
preparation of the Music Staff in ensuring that the
concert was a success and that each group gave it
their all during their performance.
Singing for your Supper Photos
At our recent Singing For Your Supper concert,
Peter Burton very generously photographed the
performances throughout the night. He has
uploaded the photos to his website
www.burtonphotography.com.au where all parents
can access the images of their child’s choir. To
access the photos you need to click on the “OC
Singing For Your Supper” gallery and then enter
the password “Supper2012”. You will then be able
to view and download any of the photos. If you
experience problems accessing the gallery, please
ensure your browser (particularly IE) is configured
to accept cookies. I would like to publicly thank
Peter for his generous donation of his skill and time
to ensure the performances of our students are
captured for all to recall.
Recital Sunday
This Sunday, the Piano, Guitar and Voice Music
Tuition students of OC will be presenting their
annual Recital Sunday. The details of each recital
have been distributed through your child’s Music
Tutor and all recitals will be held in the Junior Arts
Centre. I would like to remind all students that if
you are attending the recital as either a performer
or as an audience member, you must dress in full
College uniform.
Music Tuition Exams
Congratulations to all of the students who sat their
Semester 1 Music Tuition exams last week. The
feedback I have received from the Music Tutors
indicates that there were a number of standout
performances across the exams and that a majority
of students have set new standards of performance
in their exam. The Exam Reports will be
distributed this week at your child’s regular music
lesson and I would ask that all parents read the
report, sign it and return it to your child’s Tutor as
soon as possible.
Music Support Group
Thank you to all of the parents who attended
Monday night’s Music Support Group meeting. I
would like to publicly acknowledge the fantastic
fundraising efforts of the Music Support Group and
would like to thank the Music Support Group for
their extremely generous donation towards the
2012 Music Tour. This Group has managed to raise
tens of thousands of dollars already in 2012 and
they still have a number of other major events to
undertake in Semester 2 this year.
Year 5 Immersion
As I indicated in last week’s newsletter, the Year 5
students underwent testing for the Immersion
Program on Tuesday afternoon this week. It was
certainly great to see the enthusiasm and
excitement of the Year 5 students for this Program
and I’m sure this will translate into a fantastic start
at the beginning of Term 3. A letter will be posted
home to all Year 5 families next week indicating
the instrument that has been allocated to your
child for Immersion next semester. This allocation
has been made based on the testing results,
classroom academic results and also student
preferences.
HEAD OF CURRICULUM
One of the most important skills we can give to
our young people is a love of literacy. Books
encourage an active imagination, cultivate a
passion for literature and provide benefits that will
assist young people throughout their life,
regardless of their chosen career. That’s why I am
pleased to invite students at Ormiston College to
take part in the 2012 Premier’s Reading Challenge.
The Premier’s Reading Challenge is a state-wide
initiative for all Queensland state and non-state
school students from Prep to Year 7. The
challenge aims to help your child’s learning by
boosting the number of books read and
encouraging more challenging texts.
The Premier is
challenging all
Queensland
Primary School
students to read
or experience an
allocated number
of books for their
reading level
between 22 May and 7 September 2012. Prep to
Year 2 students are challenged to read or
experience twenty books.
(continued on page 7)
Experiencing
books can include
listening to
stories, shared
reading or
reading picture
books. Students
in Years 3 and 4
are challenged to
read twenty
books, while students in Years 5 to 7 are
challenged to read fifteen books. Every child who
meets the challenge will be presented with a
certificate signed by the Premier to recognise their
achievement.
The Junior Academic Leaders, Sarah Naulls and
Andrew Fowler, together with their Committee,
launched the initiative this week and delivered the
Reading Records to the classrooms. In addition,
they will inspire all students to participate with
weekly visits and acknowledge “Super Readers”
on Assembly. I encourage you to visit the
Premier’s Reading Challenge website at
www.education.qld.gov.au/schools/
challenge.
I look forward to a large number of our students
engaging wholeheartedly in the 2012 Premier’s
